If Atlanta, the nightlife includes dancing, eating — and some potent poetry. – If you’ve never stepped into a dimly lit room where the air crackles with anticipation right before a poet grabs the mic, you haven’t truly experienced Atlanta after dark.
If you’re looking for an open mic to hear some local talent, or you want to try out some new poetry, Atlanta has plenty of places to go.

iLounge Atlanta
1287 Glenwood Ave SE D, Atlanta, GA 30316 | (404) 627-9339

This Eastside Atlanta spot features spoken word, cocktails & hookah in an intimate, dimly lit lounge. A nice decorative touch is the mod sofas and an expansive dance floor & patio.
How to Fully Savor a Spoken Word Night in the City
Here’s your local’s guide to enjoying a spoken word performance the right way — whether it’s your first time at Apache Café, the Thursday night open mic at Kat’s Café in Midtown, or a feature show at the historic Wren’s Nest.
- Get there early, but not too early
Doors usually say 7:30 p.m., real ones show up around 8:15. That’s when the host is still playing trap-soul remixes and you can snag a good seat — close enough to see the poet’s hands tremble (or not tremble), far enough back that you don’t feel pressured when they ask, “Can I get a snap if you feel this?” - Order something strong, something sweet, or both
A rum punch from the bar at Vibes Night Lounge hits different when the poet is talking about their grandmother’s hands. A slice of red velvet from Kat’s Café tastes like forgiveness when someone on stage is finally forgiving themselves. - Learn the etiquette before you embarrass your mama
- Snaps over claps. Save the loud applause for the very end.
- No talking during the poem. That’s sacred time. Save your “Ooooh, she clocked him!” commentary for the break.
- If the poet says “This is for Black women in the room,” and you’re not a Black woman, your job is to listen twice as hard and clap twice as loud when it’s over.
- Let the poem hit you in the body, not just the head
The best pieces will make your shoulders tense up, your eyes water, or your foot start patting without permission. That’s normal. That’s the point. One night at Buteco in Grant Park, a poet named Truth killed the room into silence with a piece about his father’s last voicemail. You could hear ice melting in glasses. That’s Atlanta spoken word at its finest. - Stay for the open mic — that’s where the magic hides
The featured poet is great, but the 19-year-old who just worked up the nerve to read their first poem about heartbreak on the Red Line MARTA? That’s the one you’ll quote to your friends tomorrow. - Tip the poets if there’s a bucket
Most of these artists drove in from College Park, East Point, or Decatur on hope and a half-tank of gas. Five dollars feels like respect. - Take something home
Buy the chapbook, the $10 CD, the sticker. Ask the poet to sign it. Ten years from now, you’ll pull it off your shelf and remember the night the room held its breath together.
Atlanta’s spoken word scene isn’t just entertainment — it’s church, therapy, protest, and family reunion all rolled into one. Come as you are. Leave different.
Next spots to catch a vibe this week:
- Wednesday: “Lyricism & Libations” at Joystick Gamebar (Edgewood)
- Thursday: Kat’s Café Open Mic (Midtown)
- Friday: “Unbound” featuring Jon Goode at Riverside Epicenter (Roswell)
See you in the cypher, family. Bring your heart. Leave your phone on silent.
Final Word
No matter if you want to catch a comedy club, go out for a night of cocktails and hookah, or go to the club, Atlanta has it all. And if you want to eat in a special place, Atlanta new restaurants continue to pop up every week!

How To Get Casting for Georgia Movies and TV Series
For aspiring actors looking to dip their toes into the industry without a speaking role, becoming a movie extra—also known as a background actor—offers an accessible entry point. But success isn’t just about showing up; it’s about strategy, patience, and professionalism. Here’s a guide to thriving as an extra in the Peach State.
Step 1: Get Registered with the Right Casting Agencies
The first hurdle? Getting noticed. Georgia’s extras market is competitive, but you don’t need an agent to start—many opportunities are open to self-submitters.
Focus on reputable Atlanta-based agencies that specialize in background casting. Top players include Central Casting, the nation’s leading background actor hub; Hylton Casting, known for innovative approaches to film and TV gigs; and Set Life Casting, which handles everything from features to music videos across the state.
Besides, AtlantaFi.com, other standouts are CAB Castings for reality TV and scripted shows, and Casting TaylorMade, which connects extras to a network of TV and commercial jobs.
Pro Tip: Follow these agencies on Facebook and Instagram for real-time casting calls—many post opportunities daily.
Websites like AllCasting and Backstage also aggregate local gigs, making it easy to submit headshots and measurements from your couch.
Aim to register with at least three to five agencies to increase your odds—it’s a numbers game, after all.
Step 2: Nail Your Submission and Wardrobe Game
Casting directors sift through hundreds of applications, so make yours pop. Include a clear headshot, full-body photo, and essential stats: height, weight, clothing sizes (shirt, pants, shoes), age, ethnicity, and any visible tattoos.
For specific calls—like airport passengers or dinner guests—tailor your photos to the wardrobe requirements, such as business casual or evening attire.
Once booked, wardrobe is key. Bring multiple outfit options that fit the scene, and always have backups for weather or last-minute changes. Extras who look the part get more screen time—and repeat bookings. As one Atlanta extra shared in a 2017 guide, “Create your own story & be assertive” by suggesting subtle background actions that enhance the scene without stealing focus.
Step 3: Master the On-Set Essentials
Long days are the norm—expect 8 to 12 hours, sometimes starting at dawn.
Arrive early (aim for 30-45 minutes before call time) with a “go bag” stocked with snacks, water, sunscreen, a book or phone charger, and comfortable shoes. Patience is your superpower: You might wait hours for a 30-second walk-on.
Follow directions meticulously—crew members appreciate extras who listen and adapt quickly.
Avoid common pitfalls like complaining, using your phone on set, or approaching principal actors. Instead, be kind to everyone from PAs to craft services; word travels fast in Atlanta’s tight-knit film community.
Pay typically starts at $100 for an 8-hour day, with overtime at time-and-a-half, mailed weeks later.
For higher earnings, aim for stand-in roles, where you mimic actors during lighting setups.
Step 4: Network and Build Your Reel
Georgia’s industry thrives on connections. Join Facebook groups like “Atlanta Movie Extras & Georgia Casting” to swap tips and share calls.
Attend industry mixers or follow the Georgia Film Office for events showcasing behind-the-scenes talent.
Document your work: Even blurred background shots can build a reel for future auditions.
Final Word
Success stories abound. The most successful extras turn sporadic gigs into a steady side hustle by treating every set like a learning lab, eventually landing speaking roles.
And with Tyler Perry Studios and Trilith leading expansions—projected to add nearly $3 billion in investments through 2027—the opportunities are only growing.
Because of the steady flow of movie and TV productions, Atlanta has been called the Hollywood of the South and it’s not just a label.. If you want to be an actor, the city has classes you can take as well as places that provide headshots and more. You can also audition at numerous casting calls to build your movie and TV reel.
Are you interested in becoming an actor in Atlanta? You’re in the right place!
With more than 900 movie and TV projects just in the last few years, the film industry has generated more than $9 billion for the state of Georgia.
There are so many movies filmed in Atlanta these days that it’s hard to keep up with it all. That’s why I suggest you subscribe to AtlantaFi.com to get all the freshest movie casting calls, celeb sightings and Atlanta happenings delivered to your inbox.

Of course, Tyler Perry Studios jobs won’t just come from filling out an application.
Here’s what Essence Wallace, who worked at Tyler Perry Studios, says about getting a job with the movie mogul.
As far as the process for being hired at TPS — or any job in film and television production for that matter — it’s all about WHO you know. Networking isn’t my strength, per se — BUT I learned to master the art of building relationships. One great relationship will KEEP you working in this industry. It starts by getting out and surrounding yourself with people that are working — like being willing to work for free on independent projects and going to workshops or seminars to develop your craft. As far as Perry is concerned, he puts a lot of importance on make hiring decisions that reflect the community, especially given the lack of representation in the movie business.
This is what he told CBS News:
“I know for a fact that when I drive in through these gates, onto this 330 acres and see these 12 sound stages, and see the highway sign that says ‘Tyler Perry Studios’ as you’re making to the exit in here, as I come in here and I see these hundreds of people working, these black and brown – I’ve been on sets where I’ve been the only black face on, only black face, as recently as 2019 going, ‘Where are the black people in this movie?’ Back behind the camera? So, when I come to work here and every black person that comes to work here they go, ‘Oh my God, it’s heaven. Here we are. We’re represented.’ Where everybody’s represented. LGBTQ’s represented. Black, white, gay, straight, whatever. We’re all represented, working hand-in-hand, arm-in-arm.
Tyler Perry also gives job opportunities to students. Here’s how to get an internship with Tyler Perry Studios.
Wallace, who is now with The Chosen Productions, says the key to getting hired to work on a Tyler Perry Studios production is to immerse yourself in the Atlanta film community, particularly the Tyler Perry Studios environment.
“I’ve rarely seen anyone get hired from submitting a resume online and having a formal interview – not that it doesn’t ever happen. It’s just simply not the norm for someone pursuing a career in film and TV,” she says.
“You have to set your goals, decide the types of projects you want to work on, and then find opportunities to engage with other like minded individuals,” she tells AtlantaFi.com. “I know this is not the answer most people are looking for, but I’ve helped more people get jobs just by helping them connect with the right person vs. focusing on their education and background.”
By the way, Wallace says The Chosen Productions is also accepting resumes for all positions at thechosenproductions2014@
