  • Old slave house on Whitehall Street in Atlanta

Atlanta Lookback: The Slave Auction House On Whitehall Street

    2 Min Read

“War is hell.” That familiar phrase was reportedly first uttered by Union General Tecumseh Sherman during the Civil War. Sherman commanded more than 100,000 troops as destroyed the American South town by town in the infamous “March to the Sea.”

Did You Know About The Slave Auction House In Atlanta?

One of the cities in his wake was Atlanta, then a teetering rail town. There are photographs that exist of much of the carnage, thanks to official Union photographer George N. Barnard, who was embedded with the soldiers.

In 1866, Barnard published one of the most important war photography projects of all time, “Photographic Views of Sherman’s Campaign.”

Much of  Atlanta’s landscape was part of Sherman’s activities. As Georgia Tech’s historical account observes, “In anticipation of advancing Union troops in the summer of 1864, several forts were built on what is now Georgia Tech land. Seen as strategically high ground, land along the southern edge of campus was cleared and fortified by the Confederacy to prevent direct frontal attacks on the city.”

One of the more iconic pictures taken during Sherman’s invasion of Atlanta shows a structure on Whitehall Street used to hold slave auctions all but abandoned. Whitehall Street today is in the middle of a den of old, abandoned buildings, open and wild fields and liquor stores.

Atlanta has a lot of inspirational people and AtlantaFi.com is going to introduce you to many of them as well as cool places to go, great restaurants and other ATL happenings.

What Can Anton Walkes Bring to Atlanta Utd In The MLS In 2020?

    3 Min Read

(Editor’s note: This is a sponsored post. Read more about our sponsored content.)

Atlanta United have prepared for the upcoming MLS season by reacquiring a familiar face recently: English right back Anton Walkes.

MLS Soccer explains how the 22-year-old defender has signed back on at the Mercedes Benz park, having been on the books of English League One side Portsmouth.

He previously played for the Five Stripes on loan back in 2017, but returned to his parent club Tottenham Hotspur, who loaned him to Portsmouth before selling him.

Anton Walkes Joins Atlanta United For 2020 Season

Portsmouth couldn’t make use of the defender as they hunted promotion from their division. His transfer has divided fans at Fratton Park.

Throughout this season, bwin states that Portsmouth have had problems at the back making Walkes’ transfer all the more baffling for some. However, journalist Mark Catlin explained how letting him leave made sense as he wanted to play regular soccer.

Portsmouth’s loss is Atlanta’s gain ahead of the new season in which they’re hoping to push on in the Eastern Conference.

Capturing Walkes represents something of a coup for Atlanta. His brief stay back in 2017 was a success and he slotted in comfortably at right back during that time. Having finished second in the Eastern Conference they lost in the semi-final of the MLS Cup, but as they’re boasting crowds in excess of their rivals, there is a feeling they could be on the cusp of further success. So, what will Walkes bring to add to that hope?

Manager Frank de Boer is an experienced European soccer player and coach who played in defense himself so he knows the modern game, and how players at the back also need to be able to attack. On the right side of Atlanta’s defense last year was Franco Escobar and whilst he was solid enough at times, he doesn’t have the same attacking attributes as Walkes.

The Englishman is more of a wing back, able to break down the flank at great speed and help the attack.

The Five Stripes played a variation of three at the back last season which is only effective if the full backs overlap and add value to the attack. Julian Gressel can operate as a winger, but with Walkes being added to the roster it gives De Boer far more flexibility in his approach.

Signing a young and exciting player from a major European country is also a big bonus for Atlanta in terms of further recruitment.

The fact Walkes, a player likely coveted by several clubs in his own domestic league, chose to join is a real boost.

That’s been further developed by Manchester United taking Efrain Morales on trial recently. If Atlanta is seen as a club fit for developing talent that can excel on the world stage, they’re more likely to be trusted with loan players from big European clubs.

De Boer’s side finished third overall in the MLS last year and if they’re to catch up with New York City and Los Angeles FC, they’ll need to be able to tap into whatever vein of talent they can. Luring Walkes Stateside is a huge step towards asserting themselves as one of the top MLS sides in the eyes of the soccer world.

Marvel Fans Hyped Over Atlanta-Filmed Avengers 4 Trailer

    3 Min Read

Marvel fans are losing their stuff after the Avengers 4 trailer debuted on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018. The 2-minute video didn’t show many of the superheroes but gave fans just enough of the plot to spark a frenzy.

News of the new trailer comes on the heels of Marvel’s new Captain America teaser. Unlike much of Avengers 4, which had key scenes shot in metro Atlanta, Captain America was filmed in London, Manchester, Caerwent, and Liverpool in the United Kingdom, and Los Angeles.

The new Infinity War trailer is set to be released in the UK Wednesday afternoon with American audiences reportedly getting a glimpse on “Good Morning America.”

    Where was Avengers 4 filmed?

Filming for Avengers 4 began in August 2017 at Pinewood Studios in Fayetteville. The Atlanta area has been embraced by Marvel producers as an affordable place to shot and do post-production on the Avenger movies, including some of their individual superhero movies such as Ant-Man.

So far, three Avengers films have been shot in ATL with one slated for release in 2019.

The Captain Marvel trailer debuted during halftime of the Washington Redskins-Philadelphia Eagles game, which starts at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Fans can expect the usual superheroes with deep story arcs, including Iron Man, Black Panther, Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Widow and of course, Thanos.

Captain Marvel will be released in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2019, a few months ahead of Avengers 4, which premieres May 3.
