Because of the damage that the coronavirus pandemic has done to the travel industry, many major airlines have taken steps to ensure that passengers are healthy before they board planes.
The carriers will require that passengers complete “health acknowledgements” as an added precaution to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The voluntary health rules come from Airlines for America (A4A), the industry trade organization representing the leading U.S. airlines.
Here are the main areas that would constitute a “health acknowledgment,” according to A4A:
- Face Coverings: Assurance that all passengers have a face covering and wear it at the airport and on board.
- Symptoms: Assurance that the passenger is not experiencing a fever, which is essentially a temperature (38C/100.4F or higher), coughing, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, loss of taste or smell, chills, muscle pain and/or sore throat.
- Exposure – Assurance that the passenger has not had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or had symptoms in the last 14 days.
After initial resistance, many airline executives have warmed to the idea that passengers should wear face masks.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian told staff that masks should be required for customers and those who don’t comply should be penalized.
“We take the requirement to wear a mask very seriously,” Bastian, said according to CNBC.com. “Customers who choose not to comply with this or any other safety requirement risk losing their future flight privileges with Delta.”
Airlines That Will Require A Health Acknowledgments
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- Delta Air Lines
- Hawaiian Airlines
- JetBlue Airways
- Southwest Airlines
- United Airlines

With pressure mounting in the city, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has moved swiftly to enact police reform.
She said that the new rules were supposed to be devised by a new task force that convened to address many of the problems recent events in the city have spotlighted. But she said the fatal police shooting of Rayshard Brooks moved her to act immediately.
Atlanta Police Reform: Here Are The New Rules For Use Of Force
“I am often reminded by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and that is that ‘There is a fierce urgency of now,'” she said. “It is clear that we do not have another day, another minute, another hour to waste.”
With that Bottoms introduced an Executive Order, which directs the Interim Chief of Police to immediately adopt and implement changes to the standard operating procedures and work rules of the Atlanta Police Department concerning their use of force.
NEW: Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says she is signing a series of administrative orders calling on police to implement reforms concerning use-of-force policies: "It is clear that we do not have another day, another minute, another hour to waste." https://t.co/CGtcyDKQZz pic.twitter.com/kml2dc5bKW
— ABC News (@ABC) June 15, 2020
According to the administrative order released by the city, here are what the immediate reforms include:
- Intervening in unreasonable use of deadly force: requiring officers to intervene when seeing another officer using force that is beyond what is reasonable under the circumstances, and reporting deadly use of force to the on-duty supervisor;
- Shooting at moving vehicles: provide lawful restrictions on when an officer may use deadly force at a suspect who is in a moving motor vehicle;
- Addressing officers’ response to resistance: apply de-escalation techniques to gain voluntary compliance and use only the amount of objectively reasonable force necessary to successfully protect themselves or others during an arrest or to bring an incident under control when dealing with members of the community, suspects, and detainees; and
- Reporting deadly use of force: require the reporting of all uses of deadly force by a police officer to the Citizens Review Board.
The new rules come as Bottoms faces criticism for her handling of the protests, which have been mostly peaceful expect for some looting that took place in Buckhead.
But the public pressure has taken a toll. Bottoms announced last week that Police Chief Ericka Shields would resign so that the police force could start to rebuild with a fresh face at the helm.
Bottoms also called for and received the immediate termination of the officer who killed Brooks.
And as the spotlight continues to shine, Bottoms is among the women being vetted as a potential vice president contender with the Joe Biden presidential campaign.
Meanwhile, a sheriff in Burke County, Georgia, says that the officer who fatally shot Rayshard Brooks did nothing wrong.
“There’s nothing malicious or sadistic in the way these law officers behaved,” Sheriff Alonzo Williams told CNN.
WATCH: Burke County, Georgia Sheriff Alfonzo Williams says the fatal police shooting of #RayshardBrooks in Atlanta was “completely justified.”

Bars and nightclubs, which particularly are prevalent in Atlanta, have reopened.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued another Executive Order on Tuesday, May 12, telling reporters that the state is “in a good place.” Many restrictions he put in place to mitigate the coronavirus pandemic are being eased, he said.
Georgia Opens Bars And Nightclubs
He also took steps to enable state workers to return to work as well as some summer camps to begin planning.
“With Executive Order 05.12.20.02, live performance venues, bars, nightclubs, and operators of amusement park rides must remain closed through May 31,” Kemp said. “It will enhance health outcomes and give us the opportunity to prepare for safe reopening in the near future.”
“In Georgia, COVID-19 hospitalizations, ventilator use, and the percentage of positive cases continue to drop. However, we remain vigilant in the fight against this dangerous virus,” he tweeted Wednesday morning.
Read Kemp’s Executive Order In Full Here
Kemp’s biggest critic is the mayor of the Georgia’s largest city, Keisha Lance Bottoms, who has been appearing on national and local media outlets cautioning residents against returning to normal too soon.
“We’ve got to continue to follow the science,” she says. “I would just say that for those who don’t need to go out and don’t need to resume their daily lives, that we just still need to be thoughtful and continue to stay at home.”
“My approach has been to move into a second phase of how I’m speaking to our citizens and that is to ‘Please stay home and if you can’t stay home, then please be careful.”
"My concern in our state in and in our city is that we've gone back to normal, and there's nothing normal about where we are with #COVID19." – Mayor @KeishaBottoms pic.twitter.com/jxPSNIz3At
— City of Atlanta, GA (@CityofAtlanta) May 12, 2020
Her message has remained consistent throughout the pandemic: Stay home, stay safe.
“Nothing about this virus has changed,” she says, “It is the same virus that sent us to our homes in March and if we aren’t careful it’s going to take us even longer to get back to some sense of normalcy if we aren’t thoughtful on how we’re doing it,” she told CNN.
To that end, Atlanta has launched a number of health, wellness and food initiatives to take care of its citizens.

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced that six Atlanta police officers who pulled two college students from their car, tasing one of them, had arrest warrants issued for them.
Widely circulated social media video showed Morehouse student Messiah Young, 22, and his girlfriend, 20-year-old Taniyah Pilgrim, who attends Spelman College, yanked from their car during Atlanta protests over the weekend.
6 Police Officers Charged After Students Pulled From Car
Young was tased in the driver seat.
“I feel a little safer now that these monsters are off of the street and no longer able to terrorize anyone else,” Young said at a news conference.
“I thought I might be killed,” says Taniyah Pilgrim, a college student involved in the tasing incident in Atlanta. “Nothing really warranted it. After I realized none of this really had a reason, I was just thinking, OK, this is the end.”https://t.co/nuLVeUwKgU pic.twitter.com/e5dKEVY84S
— New Day (@NewDay) June 3, 2020
“I have multiple injuries all over my body,” Young told CNN New Day. “I had a taser in my back for eight hours.”
Meanwhile the only explanation we have from the police officers’ viewpoint, is a viral social media video where one of them tries to add some context.
Who Are The 6 Atlanta Police Officers Arrested In The Protests?
Here are the six officers charged in the violent arrest of the students and what they’re charged with:
Lonnie Hood
Hood is charged with aggravated assault and simple battery
Officer Willie Sauls
Sauls is charged with aggravated assault and criminal damage to property.
Officer E. Armond Jones
Jones is charged with aggravated battery and pointing a gun.
Officer F. Ronald Claud
Claud is charged with criminal damage to property.
Officer Ivory Streeter
Streeter is charged with aggravated assault. He was subsequently fired.
Officer Mark Gardner
Gardner is charged with aggravated assault. He also was fired.
.@KeishaBottoms who exactly did you fire? Officer A. Jones is literally over here justifying his actions and the actions of the other cops who attacked Messiah and Taniyah. Why is this officer in duty the next day? Why is this man still with a job? pic.twitter.com/ihEBBVoIU6
— Eyerusalem (@_eyerusalem) May 31, 2020
According to a news report, Atlanta Police Chief Ericka Shields told officers in a memo that supporting agencies have pulled back their support because of the arrests of the six officers.
“Now that the charges have been announced, I’m very concerned with the space we find ourselves in, both tactically and emotionally,” Chief Shields wrote, according to CBS46.com. “Multiple agencies that were assisting us in managing this incredibly volatile time have pulled out, effective immediately. They are not comfortable with their employees being leveraged politically by the potential of also facing criminal charges.”
Amid day after day of more protests, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says that the president of the United States is making matters worse when he speaks.
Bottoms spoke to CNN on Monday, where she weighed in on the protests which have rippled across the country in the wake of the grips of a tense situation.
“America is a tinderbox and Donald Trump’s tongue is a flame right now,” Bottoms told CNN. “He’s got to know that his actions aren’t helping us right now. Every time he opens his mouth, he throws another match on the fire. If he can’t lead us all, he can’t lead any of us.”
She added that this may be the time, in one of the darkest moments of U.S. history, for him — the leader of the free world — to be silent.
Television news channels showed repeated images and video of looters — both black and white — taking place in American cities. At the same time, many more places held peaceful protests where police officers even joined in the marches.
Atlanta Responds To Protests
In Atlanta, retailers like Target and CVS had closed certain locations. Meanwhile other stores opted to close early, including Walmarts in some urban areas.
