Angela Bassett has been nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023.
Bassett is the first actress to be nominated for an Oscar for a Marvel movie.
Last month at the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony, Bassett took home the Best Supporting Actress award for the same role.
Bassett dedicated her award to late co-star Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 from cancer.
We mourned, we loved, we healed. We were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman,” Bassett told the audience. “We have joy in knowing that with this historic ‘Black Panther’ series, it is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us.”
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was nominated for several other awards at the star-studded event which was held on January 10, 2023 event, but the Supporting Actress is a big one as it may influence how the Academy Awards vote next month.
Bassett, 64, played Queen Ramonda in the franchise, the mother of T’Challa and Shuri and the widow of King T’Chaka.

The film also stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Danai Gurira and Danny Sapani.
Atlanta played a huge role in the makings of the Black Panther films.
Atlanta was the central production hub for both Black Panther movies and casting calls were held locally for both as well.
Like its predecessor, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was filmed in various parts of the United States and Puerto Rico. Major production was done just outside Atlanta at Trilith Studios, as well as around Georgia, including in Brunswick at the Mary Ross Waterfront Park.
Tyler Perry Studios was used for some key scenes in the first Black Panther movie. This time, the production moved around quite a bit.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was released in the United States on November 11, 2022 as part of Marvel Studios’ Phase Five production slate.
Speaking of Angela Bassett, the actress recently caught Sheila E. at City Winery in Atlanta, and when “Glamorous Life” came on, she blessed us with the moves!

Filmmaker and Morehouse College alumni Spike Lee is underscoring his love for Atlanta with a new program. He has teamed up with The Gersch Agency to form the Spike Fellows Program, a fellowship to help students at the Atlanta University Center, including Morehouse, Morris Brown and Clark Atlanta students.
“It is with great honor, privilege, and excitement to announce the Spike Fellows in association with my partners The Gersh Agency and the AUCC. From the jump, from the get-go, I knew when (not if) I opened a crack in the door, I was bringing as many Black and brown folks with me in front and behind the camera,” Lee said in a news release.
The fellowship program begins in earnest in January 2023 and Lee has signed on for a multi-year commitment.
The Spike Fellows Program will be comprised of five graduating students from AUCC — selected by a panel including Lee, the AUCC community and Gersh management.
The program will provide academic debt relief, industry mentorship, post-graduate internships and full-time employment, according to Deadline.
Lee graduated from Morehouse in the spring of 1979 and went on to shoot his groundbreaking film “She’s Gotta Have It,” a few years later. Widely seen as a film pioneer, Lee doesn’t get nearly enough credit for his star-discovery abilities.
The first full-length films of actors such as Martin Lawrence, Rosie Perez, Robin Harris, Queen Latifah and Halle Berry were Spike Lee Joints.
Lee said that he has always had an affinity for HBCUs, which he has tried to reflect on film.
“I know firsthand the education one receives at a Historically Black College and University. I am who I am because of my grandmother (Zimmie Jackson) and my mother (Jacquelyn Shelton Lee) who both graduated from Spelman College. I am who I am because of my grandfather (Richard Jackson Shelton) and my father (William Lee) who both graduated from Morehouse. It’s on the campuses of Spelman and Morehouse where they met, fell in love, and got married. As my elders often told me, ‘Deeds not words.’”
Final Word
Lee isn’t the only famous filmmaker making a way for young enthusiasts in the craft. The Tyler Perry internship program is accepting students.

Move over, Netflix and BET. Madea’s coming to Amazon Studios. Or at least, her creator, Tyler Perry is. The Atlanta-based filmmaker recently inked a four-picture agreement with the powerful company’s streaming and film production arm.
That means that in addition to holding casting calls, he’ll soon be hiring at his movie studio for Amazon Prime shows and movies.
“I’m excited and grateful to start working with Amazon Studios to bring movies to Prime Video,” said in a statement. “Jennifer Salke [Head of Amazon Studios] and the entire team have welcomed me with open arms. I’m looking forward to continuing telling unique stories and bringing my next projects to the global audiences that they reach.”
“Tyler Perry is undeniably one of the most prolific creators of our time. He is a true multihyphenate who has defined his own incredible brand of storytelling and inspired people all over the world with his series and films,” Amazon Studios head Salke was quoted as saying. “We are excited to collaborate with Tyler and his teams to bring even more of his fantastic signature films to our global audiences.”
Perry hopes to capitalize on his success with Netflix, where he brought A Fall From Grace and A Jazzman’s Blues to the streaming platform.
It’s been nothing short of a meteoric rise for Perry, who was born into poverty in New Orleans.
As a struggling playwright, Perry says he had to make his own path to stardom.
“You got to understand, I had no mentors,” Perry told Forbes. “My father doesn’t know anything about business, and my uncles and mother, they know nothing about this. I didn’t go to business school. Everything I’ve learned, I’ve learned in progress.”
Perry says he was told that the audience he was catering to wouldn’t be able to support full-feature films.
From Chitlin Circuit To Media Mogul
“ ‘Black people who go to church don’t go to the movies,’ ” Perry told Forbes that he was told back then. “I came from a place where Black people had already embraced me and loved me. I was completely happy there, and still am.”
Perry joins an exclusive list when it comes to being one of the richest businessmen in the state. Here is Georgia’s billionaires club.Read more: Best work from home jobs in Atlanta, Georgia

Giving back to the community through football has taught us so many invaluable life lessons that we’ve been able to share with kids in similar situations like mine when I was growing up. My hope is that this movie will shed light on the realities that kids and adults face in the hood and within the complex world of football,” said Snoop Dogg.
“Having been fortunate to work with each in the past, I can attest that Snoop, Charles, and Kenya are the perfect ingredients to make Underdoggs a classic sports comedy,” said Jonathan Glickman. “In particular, Snoop’s personal connection to the material will make for a film that not only delivers laughs, but a whole lot of heart for generations of fans.”

What Is The Plot Of A Man In Full?
What we know about the plot for A Man in Full can be gleaned from the 1998 Tom Wolfe bestselling novel, which the series has been adapted from.
Here’s a summary of the novel:
The setting is Atlanta, Georgia-a racially mixed, late-century boomtown full of fresh wealth and wily politicians. The protagonist is Charles Croker, once a college football star, now a late-middle-aged Atlanta conglomerate king whose outsize ego has at last hit up against reality. Charlie has a 29,000-acre quail-shooting plantation, a young and demanding second wife-and a half-empty office complex with a staggering load of debt.
Meanwhile, Conrad Hensley, idealistic young father of two, is laid off from his job at the Croker Global Foods warehouse near Oakland and finds himself spiraling into the lower depths of the American legal system. And back in Atlanta, when star Georgia Tech running back Fareek “the Cannon” Fanon, a homegrown product of the city’s slums, is accused of date-raping the daughter of a pillar of the white establishment, upscale black lawyer Roger White II is asked to represent Fanon and help keep the city’s delicate racial balance from blowing sky-high.
