Furthermore, she is an absolute angel. She’s just a very lovely person. She never minds if her clients fall asleep, which never happens to me like it used to because we always have the most amazing conversations. Atlanta’s largest newspaper recently made history by naming its first black editor-in-chief!
Leroy Chapman Jr. has begun his tenure at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, succeeding longtime Editor Kevin Riley, who announced his retirement Thursday.
AJC Names First Black Editor-In-Chief
As the organization’s top news executive and first Black editor in chief in the newspaper’s 155-year history, Chapman will oversee the newsgathering, programming, features, and opinion teams as well as the editorial teams responsible for video, audio, newsletters and events. Chapman will report to AJC President and Publisher Andrew Morse.
Riley, one of the longest-tenured editors of a major daily publication, will retire later this year. He will assume the role of editor at large during a transition period.
THE MOMENT:
On March 23, 2023, for the first time in 155 years, the @ajc hired a Black man – @AJCLeroyChapman – to become Editor-in-Chief. Blessed to have witnessed this moment in history. I've never been prouder to be associated with this fine organization.
Good Luck Leroy pic.twitter.com/ia7xPv3EJi— Ernie Suggs (@erniesuggs) March 24, 2023
“Leroy Chapman is an outstanding journalist, an inspirational leader, and an innovative thinker,” Morse said. “We are lucky to have him leading our newsroom as we transform the AJC into a modern media company at the center of life in Atlanta. We also want to recognize Kevin’s long, decorated history as editor of the AJC. He has made invaluable contributions to this institution and this city. We’ll miss his sound judgment and good humor and wish him the best in a well-deserved retirement.”
Who Is LeRoy Chapman Jr.?
Chapman is currently managing editor at the AJC, overseeing daily news gathering, breaking news, coverage of key news topics including state, local and federal government, politics, education, public safety, transportation, Georgia’s economy and the environment. Sports was added to Chapman’s responsibilities earlier this year. He joined the AJC in 2011 from The State in Columbia, S.C.
Since joining the AJC, Chapman has shepherded some of the publication’s most high-profile stories, including the efforts to undermine Georgia’s 2020 election results, the court cases of teachers and administrators charged in the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal, and the investigation into Atlanta’s affordable housing crisis during a time of economic uncertainty. Chapman is a U.S. Navy veteran and has been a journalist for 28 years. He lives in Gwinnett County with his wife Dawn and is a father to three adult children. The Chapmans’ oldest child is a relative the couple adopted when he was 13.
“The significance of this moment isn’t lost on me. This kind of opportunity is why African Americans come to Atlanta,” Chapman said. “Kevin has been excellent at being visible in our communities and hearing from people. I am looking forward to getting out into the community and understanding more about how the AJC can continue to serve audiences and improve our city.”
Riley started his career in 1983 at the Dayton Daily News, which is also owned by Cox Enterprises, and was editor in Dayton for four years before coming to Atlanta in 2011. In his 12-year tenure, he emphasized public service, investigative journalism, and political coverage, as Georgia claimed a leading role in national politics. He oversaw the largest reporting staff covering Georgia’s governor and legislature.
“I have never felt more inspired about the future of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution,” Riley said. “It’s been an honor to lead these incredible journalists and to serve the citizens of this state and city for the past 12 years. I will miss being a part of this storied organization, but I know its finest days are ahead.”

Tech pre-accelerator Geekz Ventures recently announced its class of 10 startups for its inaugural cohort program, including some with ties to Atlanta.
The city’s tech industry continues to be one of the most progressive in the nation on many fronts.
The Growth pre-accelerator program supports Black and Latinx-led early-stage companies from any industry, with a focus on MediaTech, Entertainment, and Mobile Technology. Applicants were assessed on their product, video pitch, potential impact, and capacity to build a scalable business.Kicking off in March 2023, the highly competitive 10-week program offers training, mentorship, and resources to help founders build successful businesses. Geekz Ventures provides access to world-class mentors and coaches, peer-to-peer networking, and an equity-free grant with the possibility for follow-up funding.
Topics such as branding, scaling operations, knowing your numbers, product market fit, and emotional intelligence in leadership will be covered.
In addition, founders participate in workshops and one-to-one office hours. They will also gain media exposure, including opportunities to be featured on the digital news platform, UrbanGeekz.
Geekz Ventures is founded by award-winning BBC-trained journalist-turned-serial entrepreneur Kunbi Tinuoye. Former WeWork Enablement executive Brandon Wilkins will serve as the program manager.
“We were inundated with applications,” said Tinuoye.” After a rigorous application process, we have selected founding teams that we truly believe can build sustainable and scalable brands.”
Geekz Ventures program manager Brandon Wilkins said, “What’s exciting me the most is being able to witness up-and-coming black-founded tech startups. Black people still represent the tech space in low numbers, and I’m excited to see the innovation and growth.”
Speaking about one startup that has caught his eye, Wilkins cites The Barter Shop. Aimed at creating an inclusive micro-economy for small businesses and solopreneurs, the startup was founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the home of Black Wall Street. For Wilkins, “with the history of what happened there, this takes determination and great bravery.”
Mentors and coaches include Mandela SH Dixon, the former CEO of All Raise, a non-profit on a mission to accelerate the success of female and non-binary investors, founders, and operators in tech.
Gary Stewart, MD of Techstars NYC powered by J.P. Morgan joins Hodge Dixon alongside other high-profile leaders in the media or tech startup ecosystem.
Other mentors include Kathryn O’Day, partner at Atlanta Ventures; Marguerite Pressley Davis, founder of Finance Savvy CEO, Aniyia L. Williams, Principal at Omidyar Network, and Terry (Kojo) Oppong, Creator Manager at LinkedIn, among others.
“I am impressed with the cohort of early-stage founders that Geekz Ventures has assembled and proud to serve as a mentor,” said Danielle Nicholson, Geekz Ventures coach, and founder and CEO of BuilderBloc, a legal and business advisory firm that works with early-stage founders in emerging markets. “I look forward to providing these founders with the legal guidance required to build a solid foundation for future success.”
Geekz Ventures also provides an outlet for its entrepreneurs to work on their emotional health, professional relationships, and stress management.
“Our mission is to empower business owners and entrepreneurs of color to create the lives they always imagined for themselves,” said Geekz Watch coach Chantel Cohen and founder of CWC Coaching & Therapy, which provides therapy and coaching services to entrepreneurs and professionals alike. “We are excited to work with Geekz Ventures. No matter if it’s summertime or fall, you’ll enjoy the lush scenery in the heart of Georgia’s state parks.
Here Are Some Of The Best Sites To See Georgia Foliage
Georgia has elite foliage, if you didn’t know. We begin with one of the most beautiful state parks in Georgia and the home of the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi River:
View this post on InstagramHere’s what one reviewer says about Amicalola Falls. “Beautiful falls with beautiful views around. Hiking is fun here and there are steps that you can take to go top of the falls. My 2year old kid did climbed easily 425 steps. There is plenty of space for picnic and spent valuable time there. All aside weather was just right. Overall it was a fabulous experience.”
2. Anna Ruby Falls (Twin Waterfalls)
View this post on InstagramHere’s what one reviewer says about Anna Ruby Falls. “Picturesque waterfall with a visitor’s center accessible by driving through Unicoi State Park.”
3. Black Rock Mountain
View this post on InstagramHere’s what one visitor says about Black Rock Mountain State Park. “Beautiful campground and state park! Our site was nice and shady. Just be warned, you will have to walk uphill to get to your site if you aren’t near the bottom. Not a big hill, but it’s uphill, none the less. Beautiful views were everywhere! The hiking trails are also pretty steep, but nothing too bad if you are a seasoned hiker.”
4. Vogel State Park
View this post on Instagram“Beautiful park. Camped here for 6 nights. Nice staff. Bathhouse was clean,” says one visitor. “They have several INDIVIDUAL bathrooms with a private shower, toilet and sink. It’s not community like a locker room. I absolutely love that!!! Number 68 was the best spot for us. It sits adjacent to the Bathhouse and our neighbors were not on top of us. The park has plenty of hiking paths, a man made beach and swimming area, paddle boating and a beautiful lake and waterfall. They have signs posted for black bears and copperhead snakes. We saw none, thank God! Beautiful and serene place. Would definitely return!”
5. Brasstown Bald
View this post on InstagramHere’s what one visitor says about Brasstown Bald State Park. “Finally made the trip back up there after many years too long of an absence. Much is still the same as I remember it with still some of the best views in North Georgia.
As of 10/5/22, there’s a $7 per person entrance fee. The walk-up trail is a nice paved path beginning between the gift shop and restroom facility. (Highly recommend the gift shop, lots of cool and unique items!) It’s about a half mile trek going constantly uphill to the top (a slight workout!), but a shuttle bus is also available if preferred.”
6. Cloudland Canyon
View this post on InstagramHere’s what one visitor says about Cloudland Canyon State Park: “$5 entrance fee for gorgeous views and short, but rewarding trails. Trails are extremely moderate for an experienced hiker, but present diverse landscape. The trails were well marked, mostly clear from a lot of foot traffic and dirt. Look out for armadillos! We saw two while we were here. You’ll hear them rustling around. We enjoyed going all the way around the loop and then ending with a peek at both waterfalls which weren’t too full but couldn’t have fomo. Lots of stairs to the waterfalls as expected. Camping, RV spots, cabins+ available for an extended stay. The trails were lively with people and dogs enjoying the mild Tuesday afternoon. I do recommend! Views still available right off from the parking lot if you are not feeling a hike. Bonus is that the park also has a disc golf course.”
7. Fort Mountain State Park
View this post on InstagramHere’s what one visitor says about Fort Mountain Park. “We visited Fort Mountain State Park recently and we had a wonderful time. Since we have visited all 56 Tennessee State Parks we thought we would visit Georgia State Parks. We are glad we went here. We enjoyed seeing the 4 story look out tower. It was a hike to it but not to hard. There is a lot of history here and several plaques are placed so we could read them. From the tower we hiked to the over look. Wow. This has amazing views here. We also drove around the park and we saw a nice lake and campground. There is another trail that goes to a waterfall which is nice. Overall great experience. Can’t wait to go back.”
8. Tallulah Gorge State Park
View this post on InstagramHere’s what one visitor says about Tallulah State Gorge Park: “What an absolutely beautiful park. We spent two days at the park, walking trails and enjoying the sights and water, and we still didn’t get the opportunity to see everything. But what we did see was stunning!
There are miles of trails you can hike. Some are located on the north side and some on the south side of the gorge. Additionally, you can cross the gorge via the suspension bridge, and even go to the bottom of the gorge. That said, we didn’t go to the bottom – it’s only 100 passes a day, though they are free – but I imagine it’s awesome. And we are hoping to do that ourselves next visit. I highly, highly recommend you been in decent to good shape if you plan to go to the bottom because there are a lot of steps (over 1000 total down and back up) that you must climb to do so. We opted to go down to the suspension bridge and back up and it was quite a work out on its own.”
9. Sweetwater Creek
View this post on InstagramHere’s what one reviewer says about Sweetwater Creek State Park: “A very well-staffed park. Excellent signage to direct you on where to go. We only took the Red Trail to see the Mill Ruins on a quick visit, but I do recommend that one for beginner hikers! The path is nicely packed and wide for comfort without much of a grade. I was a little disappointed in all the fencing around the ruins keeping you from getting a closer look, but I totally understand the purpose of it being there. The water was lovely and calming also. I would recommend this spot for a nice, relaxing afternoon in nature.”
10. Stone Mountain Park
View this post on InstagramOne reviewer says this about Stone Mountain Park: “Our first time coming by to see Stone Mountain. $20 Vehicle Entry, was well worth the drive, literally around the entire mountain. Beautiful landscape, everywhere you look. We arrived very close to dark and were thrilled to find out that they close at midnight! The Lift to the top and Gift Shop were certainly closed by the time we arrived, but we were able to navigate a well-lit sidewalk, to get a bit closer to the carving. Really pretty area, very nice folks. Absolutely worth the stop!”

When it’s date night in Atlanta, where you take the person you care to wine and dine is something you need to get right.
In this article, we’ll go over the best restaurants in Atlanta to take a date.
The most romantic restaurants in Atlanta all have top-notch wait staffs, excellent food and intimate settings. Date night restaurants in Atlanta are not scarce, but relatively few at the same time.
Here Are The Best Atlanta Restaurants For Date Night
Here are the best date night restaurants in Atlanta:
2 Urban Licks
820 Ralph McGill Blvd NE, Atlanta, GA 30306
2 Urban Licks is a great date night restaurant for a number of reasons: It’s a chi chi spot, the drinks are amazing and it’s a people-watching place.
Here is what one Google reviewer says about 2 Urban Licks: “It was a great casual place to celebrate our anniversary! Food was great! Beware though, the quantities are large! We decided to share 3 apps and an entree…even that was too much food.”
Coalition Food & Beverage
Coalition Food and Beverage is spread across 3,331-square-feet of space and seats approximately 150 diners, including a bar, outdoor dining and private dining.
While not as stiff and contemporary-looking as many of the restaurants you’d see in Midtown, Coalition at 50 Canton Street in Alpharetta strives for a more urban aesthetic and community feel.
White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails
270 Peachtree St NW, 100, Atlanta, GA 30303 (404) 524-7200
Here’s what one Google reviewer says about White Oak Kitchen: “I was staying in a hotel adjacent to this restaurant and went in for a late night bite and drink with my wife. We just wanted an appetizer and drinks but, what a creative selection, it was hard to choose just a few things. We got some wine and a couple of cocktails and the charred broccoli and carrots.”
Paschal’s
180 Northside Dr SW #B, Atlanta, GA 30313
Intl Airport, Concourse B, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, N Terminal Rd Suite T120, Atlanta, GA 30320
Known as the kitchen of the civil rights movement, Paschals has had the most continuous success of any soul food joint in the city.
Founded by the Paschal brothers, James and Robert in 1947, this CastleberryHill eatery has long enjoyed strong support from Atlanta’s black community. Since 1947, James and Robert Paschal, The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph David Abernathy and Hosea Williams all planned protests in the back room while collard greens and corn bread baked only feet away from them. Today, Elby Marshall Slack is the only original member of the staff still there. Paschal’s has morphed into a mid-upscale eatery with a cosmopolitan clientele. But it still has some of the meanest soul food in the ATL. Best dishes include Gulf shrimp, chicken and Andouille as well as the Caribbean Fish Tacos.
Sweet Auburn Seafood
171 Auburn Ave NE P, Atlanta, GA 30303
Venture down Auburn Avenue and you’ll run right into an oasis of seafood, courtesy of Sweet Auburn Seafood, the largest restaurant in the corridor. Owner Paul Williams cut his teeth in the restaurant industry as a Wendy’s franchisee for more than two decades. When he opened Sweet Auburn Seafood, he wanted it to pay homage to the area’s rich African-American past.
Menu favorites include the shrimp and grits and biscuit-size crab cakes.
The Consulate
10 10th St NW, Atlanta, GA 30309
Interior designer Douglas Hines and his wife Mei Lin, a chef with global influences, teamed up to open The Consulate in 2016 in Midtown. Before that, the Atlanta power couple opened Honey Bubble Tea in Poncey-Highland.
If you want to experience different cultures through food, this couple has you covered. They plan to open as many as eight restaurants across the city.
Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours
1133 Huff Rd NW #D, Atlanta, GA 30318
This relatively new eatery has quickly stolen the hearts of soul food lovers in the city. Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours is run by Executive Chef and Owner Deborah VanTrece has become a culinary force in Atlanta. She also runs her own catering company Catering by VanTrece. Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours has become known as an eatery that offers creative versions of Southern classics such as Jack Daniels Pecan Honey Chicken Wings and Sweet Tea Baby Back Ribs. Their Blue Plate Specials are great.
Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint
200 Peachtree St. NW L05, Atlanta, 404-230-5853
Housed in a former Macy’s department store in downtown Atlanta, Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint is a favorite spot for tourists and business travelers. Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint is owned by Terry Harps, a former CPA who also presides over Global Concessions Inc., a multi-concept operator involved in dining options at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The restaurant opened in 2011 and is known for its live music on weekends.

Prolific restaurateur Kevin Gillespie just opened a new Atlanta restaurant concept that will show off his culinary talents. The eatery opened its doors on May 24, 2024.
Open Now in Atlanta: Nàdair
Gillespie, the owner of Gunshow, opened the new restaurant called Nàdair in DeKalb County.
“So the wildcat is finally out of the bag! It’s true, we are currently working on a new restaurant slated for next year. Nàdair (from the Scots Gaelic “Dòigh Nàdair” meaning “the way of nature” and pronounced “nuh-DARE”),” Gillespie said in a post on social media.
He said that the eatery will be “the next chapter in a story we began many years ago at Woodfire Grill. I have been hoping to one day be able to return to the rustic elegance of live fire cooking, paired with a service style marked by intentionality and humility.”
Where Will Nàdair Be Located?
Nàdair will be housed in the space formerly occupied by Floataway Cafe at 1123 Zonolite Rd, NW Ste. 15, Atlanta, Ga. 30306. Here’s a map to help you find it.
It will be an honor to steward the next generation of restaurants in Asana Partners’ former Floataway Cafe space, a restaurant we admired and one that helped develop the Atlanta dining scene we see today.”
Gillespie said that more details about the new joint, including images and menus, will be revealed after the new year.

With Atlanta’s Tex-Mex restaurants offer the best cuisine from Mexico and America. Tacos, but with a twist? You’ve heard about it, but perhaps you’ve never tasted it.
This article will show you some of the best Atlanta restaurants for Tex-Mex cuisine.
What’s The Difference Between Tex-Mex And Mexican Food?
The difference between Tex-Mex and Mexican food may be one of semantics to many people: Mexican food quite naturally encompasses the food and culture inspired by a whole country, while Tex-Mex are the select Mexican dishes popularized and influenced by Texas sensibilities.
With all that said, Tex-Mex has some ingredients that you can find in many American cupboards and kitchen tables, while Mexican food has more hard-to-find products and is thus more exclusive.

What made this place a bad experience was the wait staff. They were weird acting & we felt really rushed & unwelcome. The busboys were really nice tho. I wouldn’t go here again. Tin Lizzy’s is a million times better.”

We got a text saying our table was ready, before we knew it we were greeted by Randall who was very knowledgeable of the menu. We received our drinks and guacamole rather quickly.
