Chef Bella Jones is inspired about telling African-American history through food and the area’s Southern cuisine. The chef and food curator is poised to open a new Atlanta restaurant, Liz and Leon’s, in fall 2023.
When the doors open, the eatery hopes to become on of Atlanta’s best black-owned restaurants.
Chef Bella Jones Set To Open Liz & Leon’s In Downtown Atlanta
Jones, whose writings frequently matches the ancestral roots of today’s American palate to African ingredients, says her history in the kitchen is a birthright of sorts.
“I always knew that I wanted to be a Chef!” Jones wrote recently on Instagram. “I was 9 years old when Grandma let me help in the kitchen! I was so happy doing the little things grandma let me do, like pick the greens, mix the cake ingredients to her lemon cake with chocolate icing! I was overjoyed when I graduated to helping with seasoning the chicken! My heart sung when my mother taught me how to make my families Sweet Potato Recipe! I didn’t know it then, but everything my Grandmother taught me had generations of my grandmothers spirits wrapped in every recipe!”
Liz and Leon’s will be located along Hotel Row, a string of commercial buildings that served as the city’s original business district framed by developed by famed architects Samuel Inman and Walker P. Inman.
The structures’ history will only enhance the charm that Liz & Leon’s will bring to downtown. As for Jones, a natural born storyteller, we can look forward to her seasoned tails of family and food and most of all, how tastefully delicious it all is.
“From My Grandmothers Venus & Eliza on the Plantation to my kitchen today, food is what kept my family together,” Jones writes. “It’s how they survived the trials & tribulations of enslavement, what kept them when they left the horrid conditions of Mississippi & migrated to Chicago’s South Side, as they fought for their rights to better education, the right to vote & everything else we take for granted today! I don’t remember a moment in my life with my family that didn’t involve food & so this was ALWAYS MY DESTINY!”

Roosevelt Hall on the Atlanta University Center campus has undergone a $12 million renovation that is finally finished. The project wrapped earlier this month, according to the City of Atlanta.
The renovation is due to a partnership between Atlanta Housing (AH), Choice Neighborhoods and the City of Atlanta.
Roosevelt Hall Renovation Complete
The historic building, located close to Atlanta’s downtown events and activities hub, first served as the Administrative Building for University Homes, America’s first federal public housing project for black families.
A few years after its 1937 completion, the building was christened Roosevelt Hall as a homage to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
A jewel of a building, Roosevelt Hall became a dynamic gathering place for black people as the space featured a handful of storefronts like a diary, grocery store, hair salon and more.
As an AU Center structure, Roosevelt Hall aged badly and soon fell into disrepair, sitting abandoned for a decade after 2008. That is until the City of Atlanta’s Housing Authority hired architectural firm Edwards & Sayward to chart a massive renovation that would restore it to glory.
Where Is Roosevelt Hall Located In Atlanta?
Roosevelt Hall is located at 660 Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard and is the city’s last vestige of University Homes.
Now the historical building’s rich history and cultural significance have been thoughtfully re-imagined, serving the community’s needs and aspirations. The grand reopening marks a remarkable milestone in the ongoing efforts to revitalize Atlanta’s historic neighborhoods.
“The revitalized Roosevelt Hall will stand once again as a vibrant gathering place, positioned to benefit Choice Neighborhoods residents and foster connections with the neighboring Atlanta University Center,” said Eugene E. Jones, Jr. president and CEO of Atlanta Housing. “This visionary project embodies the spirit of progress, inclusivity, and preservation of heritage.”
In honor of its enduring legacy and to commemorate a new chapter in Atlanta’s history, the celebration included recognition of former University Homes residents and featured keynotes from the AH president; Courtney English, Chief Policy Officer and Senior Advisor to the Mayor of the City of Atlanta; and AH Commissioner Rosalind Elliott. The afternoon festivities concluded with a guided tour of the property that offer insights into this monumental project.
Built in 1937, Roosevelt Hall was the central hub of University Homes, the first federally funded public housing project built in the United States for African Americans. Attracting business and civic activity, Roosevelt served as the community center and featured amenities such as a laundromat, library, beauty salon and barbershop. Commissioner Elliott, who grew up in the adjacent John Hopes Homes–built for African Americans in 1941–recalled Roosevelt with fondness.
“It was a special place for all of us who lived in University and John Hope Homes,” she expressed. “Yates and Milton Drugstore was downstairs in the corner. That’s where we got prescriptions filled and my momma bought ribbons for my hair. I also had my birthday parties upstairs in the community room.”
Final Word
What you might not know about Atlanta, is that the projects first surfaced here. Roosevelt Homes was a part of that history.
The renovation boasts an array of modern amenities and community-centric spaces. Residents and visitors will have access to a state-of-the-art library, cutting-edge technology center, two captivating history walls, an enchanting urban garden, versatile community spaces, special events venues, including a scenic rooftop, and a retail area. This comprehensive redesign ensures that Roosevelt becomes a versatile and dynamic centerpiece for the community, fostering educational opportunities, cultural enrichment and social engagement.

The massive remodeling of the Chastain Horse Park (CPH) recently completed its first phase, the facility says in a press release. The park is one of the best places to ride horses in Atlanta.
The 9 million expansion includes a new Community Barn supporting CHP’s Boarder Program complete with a covered practice arena and more.
When Will Phase 2 Begin For Chastain Park Horse Park Expansion?
Phase Two is set to begin in July with construction of a Therapeutic Horsemanship Center which includes clinical and educational spaces and an additional covered arena.
The modernized horse park will greatly complement the Buckhead restaurant scene, its mansions, shops and other amenities in the area.
“We look forward to this next phase and the completion of the THC which is critical to expansion of our nationally recognized Therapeutic Riding Program,” Gross says in a written statement. “We are grateful to our key partners, architects T.S. Adams Studio, Macallan Construction, and Grovestreet Partners who have gone above and beyond in making this phase of the project successful. We are also excited to welcome Georgia Home Theater, Landplus Landscape Architecture, and Michael Jackson Landscape Company to the project.”
When Will The Chastain Horse Park Complete Its Renovation?
The entire project is slated to be completed in the third quarter of 2024, according to Executive Director Trish Gross.
The new facility will enable CHP to expand the breadth and depth of impact of their therapeutic programming throughout all of metro Atlanta and beyond. The program focuses on serving children, teens, and adults with physical cognitive and emotional disabilities as well as underserved and at-risk individuals, all in partnership with horses. CHP remains one of only two urban horse parks in the U.S. Also, it is Premiere Accredited by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH), International.
Mayor Andre Dickens recently praised the expansion, the result of a successful “Healing Through Horses” capital campaign. He said the initiative “… can expand the impact on our community. We want to help close the gap. Of 41 zip codes in Atlanta, Chastain Horse Park serves 32. That means Chastain is city wide. Where we live should not be a barrier to the quality of life you can have and have access to.”
Facility rental, boarding program, and riding lessons partially contribute to subsidies necessary for programming. Scholarship supporters include Boehringer Ingelheim’s BI Cares Foundation (animal and human pharmaceuticals), Molly Blank Foundation, Junior League, RISE Scholarship Foundation, and individuals.

Buckhead continues to reimagine itself with a slate of new projects nearing completion and just getting started, from new restaurants to condos and apartments. If you’re ever looking for cool things to do in Buckhead, it should be easy.

When you think of Atlanta, Georgia, you may not think of a Southern destination as a world-class city, but that’s exactly what it is.
The Atlanta Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau says the city boasts an impressive $16 billion hospitality industry which pulls in 57 million people annually at last count.
Where Does Atlanta Rank In Tourism?
Atlanta ranked No. 4 in its top 10 cities in the world, according to Lonely Planet. Other cities that made the top 10 included Taipei, Taiwan, and Freiburg, Germany.
What City In Georgia Is The Most Visited?
It’s no secret that Atlanta, the Peach State’s largest city, brings in the most visitors year over year. As mentioned above, Atlanta draws 57 million visitors a year, a large portion of them drawn to the city’s major attractions and landmarks.
Why Is Atlanta So Popular?
Atlanta remains a culturally important city due to several things it has in its favor, including the world’s busiest airport, its role in the civil rights movement, museums, its Southern hospitality and thriving dining scene, nightclubs, cheap real estate and much more.
Add to that the city’s Fortune 500 companies like CNN, Delta and UPS and you get a strong mix across several segments. Why Do People Love Atlanta?
Atlanta combines a lot of things that people simply can’t get any place else in one destination: great food, a large forested city, rolling hills and beautiful mountain views. Above all that, it’s the people that make Atlanta a special place. The city’s burgeoning movie industry and well-connected music scene also make it a great place to live for many well-to-do people as well as many celebrities. Speaking of which, a good number of famous people were born in Atlanta. How To Check Out Atlanta The Right Way
If you’ve only got one day in Atlanta, you’re going to know where to go, what to see and do. -
Atlanta, Georgia has been called the jewel of the Southeast. No wonder: Millions of people move to Georgia’s largest city every year. But do you ever find yourself wondering “what is Atlanta known for?”
It’s a fair question given the diverse transients that have come and made Atlanta home, bringing with them their own cultures, flavors and traditions. The city, as a result, has become a hodge-podge of different styles and vibes. But it’s still Atlanta.
Atlanta was founded in December 1847 when Georgia officials decided to build a railroad to the Midwest. This terminus would soon become the ATL.
What Kind Of Food Is Atlanta Known For?
We get this all the time. Atlanta may have a Waffle House on every block, but there’s no one food group that the city can be associated with. When it comes to beverages, though, it’s pretty fair to say that sweet tea is the drink of choice.
Fried chicken may come to mind for most folks, but the fact of the matter is that most Southern cities and towns can stake a claim to fried yard bird. And chicken and waffles is served at only a handful of restaurants here so that’s out of the question. Yep, sweet tea, on the other hand, is served in nearly every restaurant.

How Many Peachtree Streets Are In Atlanta?
If you’ve ever tried to navigate around Atlanta’s streets, one thing that can be as confusing is all get out is the number of Peachtree Streets, Avenues, Boulevards, etc., around the city. At last count there were more than 70 streets with the “Peachtree” moniker in their names. It also bears saying that Peachtree Street, Ave and Road are all the same depending on whether the stretch is zoned as residential, commercial and/or a mix of both. But in any event, when you’re in Atlanta, GPS is your friend! (But more on this later).
What Are Some Of The Most Iconic Atlanta Landmarks?
Underground Atlanta used to be the #1 place you’d bring a visitor but not this century! Now, some of the most iconic places are newer and more polished (although there are still a handful of older landmarks you still want to see).
Clermont Lounge
This place is an Atlanta institution of the adult variety, if you get what I mean. If you’re looking for elegance, this is the opposite. But it has been a fixture on Ponce de Leon Avenue because the place has managed to stay open despite the ups and downs of “progress” all around it.
The Varsity
Situated on a plum plot of land in Midtown by the freeway, The Varsity has done for the chili dog what Waffle House has done for the waffle. The restaurant features a drive-in with car-side service, making it one of the last of its kind. The food is not the award variety, but it’s a must if you want to taste what Atlantans have been eating for nearly 100 years.
Centennial Olympic Park
Centennial Olympic Park is an oasis in the middle of downtown Atlanta. One of the lasting remnants of the Atlanta Olympics (which we’ll talk about later) is a beautiful greenspace that serves as the centerpiece of downtown Atlanta.
There are numerous places to take pictures and even a ferris wheel nearby.
Read up on some of Atlanta’s best parks.
Underground Atlanta
Go in the center of downtown and beneath the bustling streets of downtown Atlanta lies Underground Atlanta, a historic area that was once the city’s original street level. Today, it features shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, offering a glimpse into Atlanta’s past.
Atlanta History: Events That Happened Here
Atlanta has been home to some of the most historic events in U.S. history. Here are some things that happened in Atlanta that you may not know about.
The Winecoff Hotel fire happened in Atlanta
The Dec. 7, 1946 fire at the Winecoff Hotel (now the Ellis hotel) in downtown Atlanta is the deadliest such blaze in U.S. history. 119 people died in the fire, which helped spark huge changes in U.S. building codes, most notably requiring mandating fire-resistant doors and firescapes.
Atlanta Child Murders
One of the darkest moments of the cities history was when a serial killer started exacting lives of young boys and girls around the city, many of them African-American.
While the case proved as controversial as the murders, Wayne Williams was convicted of the crime, which many believe was committed by someone else. Nevertheless, it is an historic event that happened.
The 1996 Olympics
The 1996 Olympics were the culmination of decades of goodwill and moving and shaking by the city’s powers that be. Although it was a triumphant moment when Muhammad Ali lit the torch, the event was also marred by an instance of domestic terrorism which took the form of the Olympic bombing.
Atlanta Is The Only U.S. City Destroyed In A War
During the Civil War in the spring of 1864, the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston, was holed up in Dalton, Georgia. The Union Army wanted to do something about it, amid other troublesome skirmishes taking place, so in early May, 1864, Union forces under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman began the Atlanta Campaign, a “scorched earth” policy to burn the city to the ground. The basically uncontested “March to the Sea” would destroy a swatch of Georgia.
Atlanta Has More Pro Sports Teams Than You May Know
When you think of Atlanta, your mind may immediately focus on the Hawks, Braves or Falcons, but we’ve got more birds than that. Here are a number of professional teams that call Atlanta home:
Club Sport League Venue (capacity) Founded Moved to Atlanta Titles Atlanta Falcons Football NFL Mercedes-Benz Stadium (71,000) 1966 N/A 0 Atlanta Braves Baseball MLB Truist Park (41,500) 1871 1966 4 (1914, 1957, 1995, 2021) Atlanta Hawks Basketball NBA State Farm Arena (18,100) 1946 1968 1 (1958) Atlanta United FC Soccer MLS Mercedes-Benz Stadium (42,500) 2014 N/A 1 (2018) Atlanta Dream Basketball WNBA McCamish Pavilion (8,600) 2007 N/A 0 Atlanta Legends Football AAF Georgia State Stadium (24,333) 2018 N/A 0 Atlanta Is A Championship Sports Town
The Atlanta Braves won the World Series in November 2021, breaking a more than two-decade drought.
Atlanta United, in just its second season, won the MLS Championship in 2018 with a commanding 2-0 win over Colorado. Atlanta United, which plays at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium set attendance records for the second straight year on the way to their title. Before Atlanta United’s victory, the city had gone 25 years since a title in a major sport. The Atlanta Falcons came the closest in 2017 before losing to the New England Patriots.
Atlanta Has The World’s Busiest Airport
More than 10 years running now (since 1998), Atlanta has had the world’s busiest airport. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, located on the line between College Park, Hapeville and Atlanta, attracts more traffic and has more airplane movements than any other airport in the world. You can also save money at Hartsfield if you strategize.
The airport is named after William B. Hartsfield, who founded the site on an abandoned racetrack, and Maynard Jackson, the first black mayor of Atlanta.
Coincidentally, Hartsfield is home to Delta Air Lines, one of the largest airlines in the world, and a major reason Atlanta is a traffic hub.
Atlanta Is Growing (And Growing)
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Atlanta experienced the third-highest population gain of any metro area in the United States, behind the Texas cities of Dallas and Houston. Between 2016 and 2017, metro Atlanta gained nearly 90,000 new residents, bringing the total population in the region to an estimated 5.8 million people.
Here’s how many people live in Atlanta.
Atlanta Is The Birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr.
While it is true that Birmingham, Alabama is the cradle of the civil rights movement, Atlanta is generally recognized as the birthplace of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the movement’s most prominent leader.
Years before the tragic murder of his mother, Mrs. Alberta Williams King, MLK, along with a number of key leaders like Andrew Young, Hosea Williams and more, roused the nation to its senses by pioneering the nonviolent protests that finally toppled segregation across the nation. King was born in Atlanta in the Auburn Avenue neighborhood in 1929. Today that site has been recognized as historic and is just a few blocks from the King Center.
Coca-Cola Was Born In Atlanta
If you like Coca-Cola, you are enjoying a taste of Atlanta with every sip. The soft drink’s long history began in 1886 when an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton, created a flavored syrup, took it to his neighborhood pharmacy, where it was mixed with carbonated water and deemed “excellent” by those who sampled it. Dr. Pemberton’s partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, is credited with naming the beverage “Coca Cola.”
There Are 60+ Streets Named ‘Peachtree’
If you’re trying to find your way around Atlanta, “Peachtree” just won’t cut it. There are more than 60 streets with a variation of Peachtree in their names, with some of them as far as 30 minutes away from downtown Atlanta.
Atlanta Is The New Hollywood
Atlanta houses the No. 1 film industry in the United States, having surpassed Hollywood in 2016. The metro Atlanta region began offering generous tax incentives in 2002 to lure movie producers. Today, Georgia has a $90 billion movie industry. See what’ movies are filming in Atlanta.
Atlanta Is Not The Strip Club Capital Of The U.S.
Contrary to popular belief Atlanta is not the strip club capital of the United States, that distinction is Portland, Oregon. Still, Atlanta’s many strip clubs make it No. 1 in the South. Here are the best strip clubs in Atlanta.
Final Word
Atlanta has paid a pivotal role in the South as well as the larger United States. The city is known for more than its hospitality and sweet tea. There’s sports, there’s good restaurants and there’s the booming real estate market.
Are you a beer drinker? You also may want to visit to a craft brewery in the city.

One of my favorite things when I’m flying out of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta is getting something to eat there. Atlanta’s airport has some of the best food of any airport I’ve ever been in.
What To Eat At Hartsfield-Jackson Airport In Atlanta
For some of the best restaurants, you’ll have to pass through airport security. Without going through the security checkpoint, you can still eat at some chains like Shane’s Rib Shack, IHOP and TGI Friday’s, among others. The exception is Atlanta ChopHouse & Brewery, which we talk about below.
Let’s get into some of the best places to eat when you’re flying in and out of Hartsfield:
One Flew South (Concourse E)
This upscale restaurant offers a fusion of Southern and international flavors, with a focus on fresh ingredients and creative dishes. It’s known for its sushi, small plates, and craft cocktails.
Varasano’s Pizzeria (Concourse A)
Varasano’s is a popular Atlanta-based pizzeria that serves delicious Neapolitan-style pizzas with a thin crust and fresh toppings. They also offer salads and sandwiches.
Chicken+Beer (Concourse D)
Owned by rapper Ludacris, Chicken+Beer is a Southern-style restaurant that specializes in comfort food, particularly fried chicken. Here’s what one reviewer says about Das BBQ: “Good BBQ, brisket is juicy. Pork ribs are fall of the bone tender, you can even eat (some) of the bones if you like. Chicken is chopped not pulled and only slightly above average. Sides are okay, but overpriced. My favorite is the creamed corn (more like cheesed corn). They generally are very quick, sides are portioned out before hand and usually you get your food within minutes.
“I believe this is the most expensive BBQ in the city (beating out previous champion Lake and Oak BBQ), mainly due to it’s a la carte menu. Rack of pork ribs and two sides is roughly $42 dollars before tip. That’s $10 dollars more expensive than a comparable meal from Fox Bros.”
