Google, National PTA Hosts Family Online Safety Workshop In Atlanta
The event took place Monday, April 23, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Google’s Midtown office at 10 10th Street NE.
Atlanta has been chosen as the kickoff city of the pilot program, which will offer essential tips on online safety, parent-centered online safety workshops led by National PTA and information on how to keep your data safe.
Google also released the findings of its Atlanta Family Online Safety survey, which includes info culled from 1,000 Atlanta families on their online safety habits and perceptions. Here are some of the data:
- 38% use a different password for each online account
- 66% double-check the web address of links in email
- 29% use two-step verification
- 82% have spoken to their kids about the information they post online
- 81% have spoken to their kids about online bullying or harassment
- 78% have spoken to their kids about finding trustworthy information online
Lucian Teo, Google’s User Education and Outreach Manager, along with Sean Arthurs, National PTA’s Senior Manager of Education Initiatives, were on hand along with area parents and guardians.
“It has never been more important to understand the basics of online safety, and parents need a strong baseline of knowledge to teach their families how to protect their information online,” Teo said in a news release. “We’ve teamed up with National PTA to introduce our first Family Online Safety Workshop, bringing families together to share the knowledge they’ve gathered teaching their own kids to stay safe on the web.”
“As parents, we want to help guide our children so they can navigate the world and make safe, smart, informed decisions,” Teo added.

Upscale ports bar STATS in downtown Atlanta will be done remodeling its space in July, the eatery recently said. The sports bar is retrofitting part of the building to add an on-site brewery and is also rebranding itself as STATS BrewPub.
The popular bar located at 300 Marietta St. NW, is also adding to its beer list in a big way.
“The brewery is something we’ve been thinking about, and with the ever growing popularity in the craft beer scene, especially in Atlanta, it seems like a great opportunity and addition to our restaurant,” said Legacy Ventures Chief Operating Officer for Restaurants Brian Bullock. “Our beer program will remain very strong, offering a little something for everyone, and now adding our own brews will make STATS even more of a dining destination.”
STATS is the defacto sports bar for tourists and business visitors in downtown Atlanta. The rebranding figures to have nary an effect to the site’s choice as a place to watch the Hawks, Falcons and other games.

Latin-American fusion restaurant Blue Cantina opened its doors in East Atlanta last week on April 19, 2018.
The eatery has risen anew after its old location near downtown Atlanta was razed after the balcony collapsed in 2017. Because they’re in rebuilding mode, the restaurant is hiring for a number of positions.
The new site at 1242 Glenwood Ave SE is more airy and offers room to grow if that’s necessary. The menu favorites are all there, including the Braised Beef Tacos, TLC Tacos and Latin Fusion Wings.
Here’s what the restaurant says about itself online: “Blending traditional Mexican flavors with a slightly southern twist, BLU Cantina boasts a modern decor to indulge the senses. No matter your seat, you’re guaranteed an epicurean experience of endless measure destined to leave you wanting more.”

Don’t necessarily think you’ll get inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but if you want to give of yourself and time by volunteering for the city’s Super Bowl in January, they need you.
Atlanta will need at least 10,000 volunteers during Super Bowl LIII for weeklong activities, according to 11Alive. To save time, organizers are keen to start the interviewing process and bring people on board.
Here’s how to volunteer for Super Bowl LIII
Helpers will be needed to shepherd people around the game festivities, including staffing along downtown streets and venues, the airport and other places. City officials are expecting more than 250,000 visitors to flock to to the city, including those with no intentions of attending the game.
Volunteer coordinator Cordell Smith told 11Alive that people will want to volunteer just to be around the Super Bowl.
“I think the biggest incentive is just being a part of the Super Bowl. For cities that usually get Super Bowls, people are used to that. Up here, we don’t always get that opportunity. We may never get that opportunity again,” he was quoted as saying.

Earlier this year, Atlanta chef Robert Phalen of the One Eared Stag opened a restaurant in East Lake that is especially close to our Southern hearts.
Mary Hoopa’s House of Fried Chicken & Oysters has been serving since February 2018. The eatery is located in the Hosea + 2nd development.
Get $1 Oysters At Mary Hoopa’s In East Lake
Tired from a long day at work? From 5 to 7 p.m. you can get $1 oysters, $3 drafts and $4 champagne.
If you want a full meal, the menu includes delights such as Whole Bird, Half Bird, Clam Wraps and Oyster Chowder.
As for the restaurant’s name, it comes from the caretaker of Phalen’s mother-in-law, Mary Hoopa. She was known for fresh food straight from the garden to the table.

If you’ve seen a “For Sale” sign outside a home these days, there’s a good chance it won’t last long. That’s because homes are selling faster than ever in Atlanta and across the nation.
A new report from Zillow says that homes sold at the fastest pace on record in 2017. It took 81 days to sell the average home in the United States last year. That’s nine days faster than the previous year. Quick home sales in Atlanta were among the top in the nation, according to Zillow.
Quick-Selling Home Market Heating Up In Atlanta: Zillow
The quickest-selling month was June 2017, according to Zillow, when homes sold and closed all in the span of 73 days. In Atlanta that month, the average home sold in just 71 days.
“As demand has outpaced supply in the housing market over the past three years, buying a home has become an exercise in speed and agility,” said Zillow® Senior Economist Aaron Terrazas. “This is shaping up to be another competitive home shopping season for buyers, who may have to linger on the market until they find the right home but then sprint across the finish line once they do. Being prepared – working with a great agent, getting financing preapproved – can help a buyer make a stand-out offer.”
It remains a sellers market for 2018 as inventory has fallen for 37 straight months, Zillow said.
The fastest-selling market in 2017 was San Jose, Calif., where the typical home sold in 41 days. San Jose also experienced the biggest drop in inventory over the past year, with 26.8 percent fewer homes to choose from than a year earlier. Homes in San Jose sold fastest last year in October, with a span of just 39 days from listing to closing.
