Metro Atlanta’s reputation of a hub for modern-day sex trafficking has gotten plenty of press over the years. Now the city is doing something about it.
This week, the City of Atlanta announced that it will be a part of creating a first-ever citywide approach to prevent sex trafficking. The initiative is part of the Pathways to Freedom city competition.
Atlanta will join three other cities across the United States in the competition, including Chicago, and Minneapolis. The trio of cities will receive funding and a senior fellow who will collaborate with city agencies on solutions to trafficking.
The Pathways to Freedom city challenge is gets its funding from the Partnership for Freedom, a public-private partnership by Humanity United.
“Every year, thousands of children, women and men fall prey to the insidious practice of human trafficking. Whether these victims are entrapped in or transported to Atlanta, we know that our city faces a human trafficking challenge disproportionate to its size,” Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in a statement.
She added: “I am pleased to announce that I will appoint a Senior Fellow within my Administration to further the City’s efforts to combat and eliminate this horrific practice. The Pathways to Freedom grant will also enable Atlanta to better address labor trafficking, which has traditionally been under-reported, and its survivors under-served. I am confident that together, we can be the strength for the powerless and the hope of the victims.”
“Cities have a critical role to play in the fight against human trafficking, and we are excited to support our winning cities as they develop new ways to address prevention and support for survivors,” said Catherine Chen, director of investments for Humanity United. “The impressive collection of applications we received is a testament to the growing political will of U.S. cities to lead the fight against human trafficking in their own communities. Atlanta demonstrates a serious commitment to addressing both labor and sex trafficking in a unique way. We are confident that the lessons that come out of Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Chicago will inspire and encourage innovation in their own communities and across the country.”

It’s been nearly two years since Prince’s death, but his timeless music has been playing nonstop ever since, thanks to The Revolution his most famous band.
The Revolution came to Atlanta Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018 and tore the roof down at the Tabernacle.
The whole gang, including Dr. Fink, Bobby Z, Wendy and Lisa, played hit after hit. Mint Condition frontman Stokely even moonlighted as lead singer on a few of the songs, including “Kiss,” “Party Up” and “1999.”
On acoustic guitar Wendy Melvoin did a stirring rendition of “Sometimes It Snows In April,” her voicing shaking from grief throughout the performance.

Talking to Fox 5 Atlanta, bassplayer Brown Mark says he knew the music they were producing in the 1980s was good, but did he think it was special?
“No, I didn’t know it was something special. Because from the day I joined Prince’s band, recording was an everyday thing,” he told the TV station. “I mean, they had the full-blown studio in the rehearsal facility, and anytime we would get on a hot groove…[Prince ] would say, ‘Roll the tape,’ you know? So, constantly recording everything that we did.”
Alot of people don’t know it, but Prince first rose to prominence with a band called The Rebels, made up of several of the Revolution members. It featured Matt Fink and Gayle Chapman (keyboards), Bobby Z (drums), André Cymone (bass) and Dez Dickerson (guitar).
In the book The Rise of Prince: 1958-1988, Alex Hahn says the Rebels project took center stage right after Prince’s sophomore album was recorded, “The next task was to improve the strength and cohesiveness of Prince’s live band so that Warners would authorize a tour in support of the second album.”

I think we all can agree that tacos are an edible art. Whether you like hard or soft shells, beef, chicken or some other meat (can’t forget the mixture of lettuce, diced tomatoes and cheese), it’s truly one of America’s favorite foods.
But where do we find these delicious eats and other Mexican treats? Well, we relied on the Yelp community to narrow down our choices. Here are the top five spots to enjoy a taco in Cobb County.
Babalu Tapas & Tacos — 33 Peachtree Pl NE Atlanta, GA 30309. A Yelper says: “My friend & I both had the shrimp taco & a veggie taco.”
Rreal Tacos — 100 6th St NE Atlanta, GA 30308. A Yelper says: “When considering the pricey location, quality of food, and other Mexican joints in the area, Rreal Tacos sits above mos.”
Taqueria Del Sol — 1200 Howell Mill Rd NW Atlanta, GA 30318. A Yelper says: “Tacos we had from the regular menu were also great! Good prices, too.”
La Pastorcita — 3304 Buford Hwy NE Atlanta, GA 30329. A Yelper says: “We had the “combo (chicken, steak, shrimp) and all three of us ate off of it and were full. We enjoyed the corn tortillas. We will definitely be back.”
The Original El Taco — 1186 N Highland Ave NE Atlanta, GA 30306. A Yelper says: “Guacamole was the greatest I’ve ever had and highly Recommend the Quesadilla.”
