• Was That a Tornado in Cobb? What To Know About Scud Clouds

    3 Min Read

Onlookers in Cobb County, Georgia, were struck with fear on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, when they looked in the sky and saw what looked like gray clouds swirling above them.

Metro Atlanta had been getting heavy rain of late along with alerts about possible hail and yes, tornadoes.

Was That a Tornado in Cobb County?

According to meteorologists, what occurred that day in Cobb was not a tornado, but what is known as a “scud cloud.”

    What Is a Scud Cloud?

A scud cloud, also known as pannus cloud or fractus cloud, is a low-hanging, ragged cloud formation often seen beneath other clouds, particularly during thunderstorms.

They are frequently mistaken for funnel clouds or tornadoes due to their appearance and movement, but scud clouds are harmless and lack the organized rotation of those more dangerous formations.

Cowboy State Daily meteorologist Don Day says in Wyoming, scud clouds are frequent.

“When you get into a thunderstorm situation, there’s a lot going on at the base of those clouds,” Day is quoted as saying. “You can get these little vortices that will spin off the base of a cloud and take a piece of cloud with it. Scud clouds are basically pieces that have broken off larger clouds.”

    Appearance and Formation:

    • Scud clouds are typically low-hanging, ragged, and detached from the main cloud base.
    • They form when warm, moist air rises and condenses at lower altitudes than the main cloud base, often due to mixing with cooler air descending from the storm.
    • This condensation can create the appearance of swirling or rotating, especially when they are pulled upward into the storm’s updraft.
    • Scud clouds can be associated with rain or precipitation, but they are not inherently dangerous.

Distinguishing from Funnel Clouds and Tornadoes

The key difference is the lack of rotation. Scud clouds, while sometimes appearing to spin, lack the organized, cyclonic rotation of a funnel cloud or tornado.

Scud clouds are also generally more ragged and less defined than the smooth, cone-like shape of a funnel cloud.

    Final Word

No, thst wasn’t a tornado. It was a scud cloud. They are often found near the base of the main cloud but are not connected to a visible wall cloud (a rotating cloud base from which tornadoes can develop).

These 20 New Laws in Georgia Are the Most Impactful

    4 Min Read

One-hundred new Georgia laws just went into effect on July 1 as part of the state legislature and Gov. Brian Kemp’s efforts to keep up with tax codes, cybersecurity, safety concerns and more.

The staff at AtlantaFi.com took the time to go through the 20 most significant laws taking effect. The full list can be found on the Georgia General Assembly’s website.

While over 100 new laws take effect on July 1, 2025, some of them are more impactful — according to public scrutiny and media coverage — than others.

Top 20 Laws That Went Into Effect in Georgia on July 1

Here are the top 20 new laws taking effect in Georgia on July 1, 2025:

    Bill NumberLaw Title/DescriptionKey DetailsSource
HB 111Income Tax CutLowers Georgia’s flat income tax rate from 5.39% to 5.19%, with plans to reach 4.99% by January 2026.
HB 136Expanded Child Tax CreditIncreases child and dependent care tax credit and introduces a $250 credit per child under age 6.
SB 55Fair Pay for People with Disabilities (Dignity and Pay Act)Prohibits employers from paying individuals with disabilities less than the federal minimum wage.
SB 79Fentanyl Eradication and Removal ActIncreases mandatory minimum sentences and fines for fentanyl trafficking, with penalties starting at 4 grams.
SB 244Wrongful Conviction Compensation ActEstablishes compensation for wrongfully convicted individuals ($75,000 per year of imprisonment) and allows recovery of attorney fees if a prosecuting attorney is disqualified for misconduct.
HB 175Enhanced Background Checks for Early EducationRequires comprehensive background checks, including fingerprint checks and searches of child abuse and sex offender registries, for early care and education programs.
HB 208Specialty License PlatesProvides two free license plates for disabled veterans and introduces new specialty plates (e.g., Shepherd Center, Georgia Veterans Service Foundation, Southern University, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, black bass conservation).
SB 1Riley Gaines Act of 2025Requires schools to designate sports teams as male, female, or co-ed based on biological sex at birth, banning transgender students from competing on teams not matching their birth gender. Also mandates gender-designated restrooms and changing areas.
SB 17Ricky and Alyssa’s LawMandates mobile panic alert systems in all K-12 public schools, connecting directly to emergency services with real-time digital mapping.
HB 428IVF ProtectionGuarantees the right to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and defines it in Georgia law.
HB 340Distraction-Free Education ActBans cellphone use by public school students in kindergarten through eighth grade during the school day.
HB 582Georgia Survivor Justice ActAllows domestic violence survivors to present evidence of abuse during sentencing, potentially reducing sentences, and permits resentencing for those already incarcerated.
SB 241Human Composting LegalizationLegalizes organic human reduction (composting human remains into soil) as an eco-friendly burial alternative.
HB 296Digital Driver’s LicensesLegalizes digital driver’s licenses on smartphones, with a two-year preparation period for police to scan them. Physical licenses still required until July 2027.
HB 266Military Retirement Tax ExemptionExempts military veterans from paying income tax on retirement income.
HB 53Veterans Cemetery Burial EligibilityExpands eligibility for burial in Georgia’s veterans cemeteries.
HB 156Vertiport RegulationAllows the state to plan for future drone and air-taxi ports (“vertiports”).
HB 164Heavier Trucks on Local RoadsPermits trucks up to 84,000 pounds (4,000 pounds heavier) on non-interstate roads.
HB 233Official State Stew and Sugarcane Syrup DayDesignates Brunswick stew as Georgia’s official state stew and the fourth Friday in November as National Sugarcane Syrup Day. Also bans companies owned by certain foreign countries from state contracts.
HB 454Vince Dooley Battlefield Trust Fund ActCreates a grant fund to preserve historic battlefields in Georgia.

    Final Word

Again, not all laws are alike. Some have sparked controversy and others have gone over quite well with the public.

Some laws, like the Riley Gaines Act, have sparked controversy, with supporters citing fairness in sports and critics warning of discrimination against transgender youth. Others, like IVF protection and wrongful conviction compensation, have broad bipartisan support.

Other laws taking effect include changes to judicial salaries (HB 85), simplified lien advertising for self-storage facilities (HB 131), and increased education funding (HB 371). These were not included in the top 20 due to lower public impact.

Heavy Rains Bring Flash Flooding To Parts of Atlanta

    3 Min Read

Torrential rain flooded parts of Atlanta at dusk on Friday, June 27 as power outages spread throughout the metro area.

The massive storm churned through neighborhood after neighborhood, toppling power poles, transformers, and causing lines too fall down.

Images and videos shared on social media showed standing water in Clayton County south of Atlanta and flooded streets north of the city.

    • The National Weather Service has upgraded Atlanta’s conditions to a “Considerable Damage” Flash Flood Warning — a serious alert.
    • In Forsyth County, Carolene Way was closed to the south Atlanta Hwy due to flooding.
    • A flash flood warning was issued for Sandy Springs and Roswell until 11:45 PM.
    • Flooding caused delays along Interstate 75, where multiple lanes of the interstate are flooded near CW Grant Parkway.

Severe Thunderstorms Bring Flooding To Atlanta

Atlanta has been experiencing a lot of rain this month.

The day began with a weather forecast indicating a high of 90°F and a low of 69°F. The day was started with partly cloudy skies in the morning, with thunderstorms rolling in the afternoon, carrying a 90% chance of rain and 0.54 inches of precipitation.

A motorist on I-75 showed high levels of water on the thoroughfare as evening set.

Storms were predicted to bring strong, gusty winds. By evening, thunderstorms were expected to continue, with a 70% chance of rain and 0.09 inches of precipitation, followed by partly cloudy skies after midnight.

Winds were forecasted to be light and variable during the day, shifting to WSW at 5 to 10 mph at night.

The potential for severe thunderstorms materialized in the afternoon and evening, with damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning followed by heavy rainfall.

Power Outages Spread Throughout Metro Atlanta

In addition to flash flooding, power outages proliferated as downed power lines and tree limbs cut off electricity to thousands across the city.

Georgia Power posted a response statement, saying, “Severe weather, including powerful winds and heavy rain, have and will continue to impact the state throughout the night. Our crews are working and repairing damage as soon as conditions allow and it’s safe to do so, with flash flooding conditions in many areas. Thank you for your patience as we work to reconnect those impacted by this weather.”

The company directed those affected to watch the status of electricity restoration on their website.

What Are Atlanta’s Precipitation Levels For June So Far?

The total rainfall in Atlanta, Georgia, for June 2025 so far, as of June 27, 2025, is approximately 2.58 inches, based on data from the National Weather Service for Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Embrace natural curls with a short afro hairstyle. Regular moisturizing and styling products can define curls and keep the hair healthy.

How To Style Short Black Hair

Depending on how short you want your hair, you have so many options that are all equally fly. You could style it with a wave brush on the top and around the taper or a long comb.

If you have longer coifs and want your hairstyle to stay in place, you may want to use some firm hold spritz or something similar.

    What Hairstyle Should I Get?

The best hairstyle you can get is one that accentuates your face. But you don’t have to get too concerned about that because if you have strong features, you can definitely pick a style that works.

Here are some popular short hairstyles:

    1. Corn Rows
    2. Finger Waves
    3. Twist Outs
    4. Bantu Knots
    5. Flat Twists
    6. Buzz Cut

So many people think a short hairstyle means the “Halle Berry cut,” but there’s way more to it than that, depending on if your hair is straight, curly or somewhere in between.

You can also go with shoulder-length coifs or a bob look that’s tighter around the crown.

What Faces Look Good With Short Hair?

When it comes to short hair, an oval-shaped face usually can rock the most styles. All of us have an oval face, by the way, but some are more oval than others.

You may feel that your face shape is more round than usual, and that’s OK too.

Obviously, if you have features that are especially peculiar, like huge lips or big cheeks, you may want to experiment with different styles for looks that bring out those features or hid them.

How Can I Style My Short Black Hair?

contrary to popular belief, styling is one of the most unique things you can do. You first want to comb out your hair. Go in the direction that it was wrapped, so that it doesn’t break.

Get your curling iron and curl your hair starting from the back. Be careful not to burn yourself!

You can moisturize your hair along the way, so that you can add fullness to your head. Here are some top hair moisturizers for black women.

You’ll also need a tool comb or feather comb. With the comb, you can lift your hair in spots that need it.

You can also take a hard brush and brush your hair along the sides and back to go along with the pattern or grain of your hair.
