Some bad stuff has been happening at Georgia’s most well-known bodies of water. Aside from being a great place to have fun outdoors outside Atlanta, Lake Lanier is one of the top bodies of water in Georgia. It also happens to collect bodies under the water.
The lake, located in a reservoir located in North Georgia, draws thousands of visitors a year and its nearly 700 miles of shoreline and 100 small islands are a needed respite during the Georgia summers. But as beautiful as the waters are, Lake Lanier has a dangerous reputation.
The lake claims at least one fatality each year, according to news reports in recent years. While the vast majority of these deaths are unfortunate accidents, there has been a growing buzz on online forums and social media that the lake’s past may not be as pristine as its waters.
Lake Lanier: A History
Lake Lanier was created in the 1950s as part of a large-scale water management project known as the Buford Dam Project. The construction of the dam and the creation of the lake were authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1946, and the project was undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The primary purpose of the project was to provide hydroelectric power, flood control, navigation, and water supply to the city of Atlanta and its surrounding areas. The construction of the dam began in 1950, and it took six years to complete. The dam was named after Congressman Carl Vinson’s hometown of Buford.

- 1958: The lake reaches its full pool level of 1,071 feet above sea level.
- 1962: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completes construction of the Buford Dam Powerhouse, which generates hydroelectric power from the flow of water through the dam.
- 1966: The Corps of Engineers begins construction of a new dam downstream of Buford Dam, called the Lower Buford Dam, which is intended to provide additional flood control and water supply capacity.

The Grove is a massive master-planned, mixed-use community in Henry County, Georgia, spanning nearly 1,300 acres off U.S. Highway 19/41, north of Hampton and adjacent to Lake Talmadge and the Atlanta Speedway.
It’s one of the largest developments in Metro Atlanta’s history, with final zoning and development agreement approval granted by the Henry County Board of Commissioners on July 8, 2025. Here’s a detailed overview based on available information:

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will no longer require passengers to remove their shoes during airport security screening.
That means at the world’s busiest airport — Hartsfield-Jackson International — it will be a little easier and hopefully quicker for passengers to board their flights.
When Will TSA’s No Shoe Removal Process Roll Out Nationwide?
As of July 7, 2025, the TSA has started implementing this policy change nationwide after a brief trial at select major airports, such as Baltimore/Washington International, Fort Lauderdale International, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Portland International, Philadelphia International, and Piedmont Triad International.
“TSA will no longer require travelers to remove their shoes when they go through our security checkpoints,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said at a news conference.
The change applies to passengers in standard screening lines, not just those with TSA PreCheck, though those without a REAL ID or who trigger scanner alarms may still need to remove their shoes for additional screening.
The TSA has not officially announced the change but stated they are exploring ways to enhance the passenger experience while maintaining security, citing advancements in scanning technology and a reassessment of threat risks.
However, since the rollout is phased and not universally applied yet, experiences may vary by airport.

What Is The Forge in Atlanta?
The Forge in Atlanta is a proposed mixed-use development project in the South Downtown district, near Castleberry Hill, at the intersection of Ted Turner Drive and Whitehall Street.
Spanning a 10-acre site, it is envisioned as a transformative urban development with up to 15 million square feet of development density, the highest allowable in the city under the SPI-1 SA1 zoning corridor.
Initially proposed by Urbantec Development Partners in 2021 as “Artisan Yards” with a focus on life sciences, the project was rebranded as The Forge but faced foreclosure in 2023 due to economic challenges and a muddled office market.
