Magic City: A History
Magic City, an iconic strip club in Atlanta, was founded in 1985 by Michael “Magic” Barney, a New Jersey native who moved to Atlanta after graduating from Duke University with a history degree in 1978. Initially working as a toner cartridge salesman, Barney earned the nickname “Magic” due to his sales prowess.
His frequent visits to local gentlemen’s clubs, like the Foxy Lady Lounge, inspired him to create a better version of the strip club experience, focusing on higher-quality dancers, customer service, and professionalism.Barney leased a former print shop at 241 Forsyth Street in south downtown Atlanta for $10,000 a month, launching Magic City on October 2, 1985, with just one dancer.
He took on multiple roles—cook, DJ, and security—while enforcing strict standards for his staff. The club struggled initially but gained traction by the late 1980s, particularly after high-profile athletes like Deion Sanders and Dominique Wilkins became regulars, drawing larger crowds and elevating its status.
Barney’s hands-on approach and connections with celebrities helped transform Magic City from a modest operation into a cultural phenomenon.
By the early 1990s, the club became a hub for Atlanta’s burgeoning hip-hop scene, with DJs like DC the Brain Supreme (of Tag Team) testing tracks like “Whoomp! (There It Is)” at the club, cementing its role as a music industry tastemaker.
Magic City’s influence grew as it attracted artists like OutKast, Future, and Migos, becoming a launchpad for Southern rap and trap music. Its reputation as a cultural institution was further solidified by celebrity patronage from figures like 2Pac, Biggie, and Drake, and its ability to survive challenges like arson, Barney’s legal troubles, and the 2020 pandemic.

Reality TV star Porsha Williams is facing a new legal battle over her $7.3 million Georgia mansion, awarded to her in her high-profile divorce from Nigerian businessman Simon Guobadia.
The sprawling 15,284-square-foot Sandy Springs estate, where Williams and her daughter Pilar reside, has been hit with a lien due to Guobadia’s failure to pay a $205,884.25 debt owed to his divorce attorney, Onyema Farrey, according to court documents obtained by news outlets.
The lien, filed on June 10, 2025, threatens the Mediterranean-style mansion, which boasts five bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a resort-style pool, and a chef’s kitchen with Sub-Zero appliances.
Williams, 44, was granted exclusive use of the property in March 2024 following her divorce filing in February of that year, after just 15 months of marriage. The court upheld the couple’s prenuptial agreement, awarding Williams the home, a 2021 Rolls-Royce, $40,000 monthly alimony for 14 months, and $224,000 in legal fees.
Williams’ mother is staying in her other home in Duluth, but the drama has deeply affected the reality star.
However, Guobadia, 61, whose reported net worth exceeds $40 million, has yet to settle the six-figure debt to his attorney, sparking concerns about potential foreclosure if the issue remains unresolved. Williams now faces the challenge of refinancing the mortgage within 36 months to remove Guobadia’s name or selling the property and splitting the equity, per the divorce agreement.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta star’s legal woes have fueled online buzz, with fans on social media expressing shock and support.
One user posted, “Porsha Williams’ mansion, received in her divorce from Simon Guobadia, faces a lien and potential seizure due to his $200,000 unpaid divorce lawyer debt. Guobadia’s net worth exceeds $40 million.” Others speculate that Williams may need to sell her Duluth home, listed for $1.85 million, to cover costs if the debt lingers.
Guobadia’s financial troubles come amid his deportation to Nigeria in June 2025 over immigration issues, including overstaying visas and past fraud allegations. He claimed his company, Simcol, lost $296 million in value following his ICE detention, but the court dismissed this as “lacking credibility,” noting he successfully ran the business internationally before.
Williams, who rejoined RHOA for its 16th season, has remained resilient, filming at the mansion despite Guobadia’s objections. In a recent episode, she cited “fear of foreclosure” as a motivator for her divorce, though Guobadia claims he continues to cover the mortgage.
Her February 2024 Lis Pendens filing further secured her property rights, signaling her determination to protect her home.
Final Word
The ongoing saga has drawn comparisons to other celebrity divorce battles, with legal experts suggesting mediation could resolve the lien issue. “The debt is a fraction of Guobadia’s wealth, so it’s surprising it hasn’t been settled,” said Atlanta-based attorney Laura Simmons. “Williams’ focus on stability for her daughter keeps her fighting, but the clock is ticking.”
As the drama unfolds, fans and RHOA cameras continue to watch closely, awaiting the fate of Williams’ hard-won mansion.

Walgreens is reducing the number of stores in its portfolio as part of a cost-cutting strategy to streamline its core retail pharmacy business. The recent announcement followed Walgreens revealing a net loss of $3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024, up from $180 million a year prior.
As a result of the losses, Walgreens says it is implementing its “Footprint Optimization Program,” which will close nearly 300 stores across the United States.
Reasons for closures include underperformance, store redundancy, and high operational costs, exacerbated by regulatory pressures and legal settlements, such as those related to opioid litigation.
“This turnaround will take time, but we are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term,” said CEO Tim Wentworth.
