Chastain Horse Park Completes First Phases Of Renovation

    3 Min Read

The massive remodeling of the Chastain Horse Park (CPH) recently completed its first phase, the facility says in a press release. The park is one of the best places to ride horses in Atlanta.

The 9 million expansion includes a new Community Barn supporting CHP’s Boarder Program complete with a covered practice arena and more.

When Will Phase 2 Begin For Chastain Park Horse Park Expansion?

Phase Two is set to begin in  July with construction of a Therapeutic Horsemanship Center which includes clinical and educational spaces and an additional covered arena.

The modernized horse park will greatly complement the Buckhead restaurant scene, its mansions, shops and other amenities in the area.

“We look forward to this next phase and the completion of the THC which is critical to expansion of our nationally recognized Therapeutic Riding Program,” Gross says in a written statement. “We are grateful to our key partners, architects T.S. Adams Studio, Macallan Construction, and Grovestreet Partners who have gone above and beyond in making this phase of the project successful.  We are also excited to welcome Georgia Home Theater, Landplus Landscape Architecture, and Michael Jackson Landscape Company to the project.”

When Will The Chastain Horse Park Complete Its Renovation?

The entire project is slated to be completed in the third quarter of 2024, according to Executive Director Trish Gross.

The new facility will enable CHP to expand the breadth and depth of impact of their therapeutic programming throughout all of metro Atlanta and beyond. The program focuses on serving children, teens, and adults with physical cognitive and emotional disabilities as well as underserved and at-risk individuals, all in partnership with horses. CHP remains one of only two urban horse parks in the U.S. Also, it is Premiere Accredited by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH), International.

Mayor Andre Dickens recently praised the expansion, the result of a successful “Healing Through Horses” capital campaign. He said the initiative “… can expand the impact on our community. We want to help close the gap. Of 41 zip codes in AtlantaChastain Horse Park serves 32. That means Chastain is city wide. Where we live should not be a barrier to the quality of life you can have and have access to.”

Facility rental, boarding program, and riding lessons partially contribute to subsidies necessary for programming. Scholarship supporters include Boehringer Ingelheim’s BI Cares Foundation (animal and human pharmaceuticals), Molly Blank Foundation, Junior League, RISE Scholarship Foundation, and individuals.

    Final Word

Buckhead continues to reimagine itself with a slate of new projects nearing completion and just getting started, from new restaurants to condos and apartments.  If you’re ever looking for cool things to do in Buckhead, it should be easy.

Atlanta One Of The Most-Visited Cities In America

    2 Min Read

When you think of Atlanta, Georgia, you may not think of a Southern destination as a world-class city, but that’s exactly what it is.

The Atlanta Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau says the city boasts an impressive $16 billion hospitality industry which pulls in 57 million people annually at last count.

Where Does Atlanta Rank In Tourism?

Atlanta ranked No. 4 in its top 10 cities in the world, according to Lonely Planet. Other cities that made the top 10 included  Taipei, Taiwan, and Freiburg, Germany.

What City In Georgia Is The Most Visited?

It’s no secret that Atlanta, the Peach State’s largest city, brings in the most visitors year over year. As mentioned above, Atlanta draws 57 million visitors a year, a large portion of them drawn to the city’s major attractions and landmarks.

    Why Is Atlanta So Popular?

Atlanta remains a culturally important city due to several things it has in its favor, including the world’s busiest airport, its role in the civil rights movement, museums, its Southern hospitality and thriving dining scene, nightclubs, cheap real estate and much more.

Add to that the city’s Fortune 500 companies like CNN, Delta and UPS and you get a strong mix across several segments.

    Why Do People Love Atlanta?

Atlanta combines a lot of things that people simply can’t get any place else in one destination: great food, a large forested city, rolling hills and beautiful mountain views. Above all that, it’s the people that make Atlanta a special place.

The city’s burgeoning movie industry and well-connected music scene also make it a great place to live for many well-to-do people as well as many celebrities. Speaking of which, a good number of famous people were born in Atlanta.

Things You Didn’t Know About Atlanta

    9 Min Read

Atlanta, Georgia has been called the jewel of the Southeast. No wonder: Millions of people move to Georgia’s largest city every year. But do you ever find yourself wondering “what is Atlanta known for?”

It’s a fair question given the diverse transients that have come and made Atlanta home, bringing with them their own cultures, flavors and traditions.

The city, as a result, has become a hodge-podge of different styles and vibes. But it’s still Atlanta.

Atlanta was founded in December 1847 when Georgia officials decided to build a railroad to the Midwest. This terminus would soon become the ATL.

What Kind Of Food Is Atlanta Known For?

We get this all the time. Atlanta may have a Waffle House on every block, but there’s no one food group that the city can be associated with

When it comes to beverages, though, it’s pretty fair to say that sweet tea is the drink of choice.

Fried chicken may come to mind for most folks, but the fact of the matter is that most Southern cities and towns can stake a claim to fried yard bird.

And chicken and waffles is served at only a handful of restaurants here so that’s out of the question. Yep, sweet tea, on the other hand, is served in nearly every restaurant.

How Many Peachtree Streets Are In Atlanta?

    Peachtree Street in Atlanta

If you’ve ever tried to navigate around Atlanta’s streets, one thing that can be as confusing is all get out is the number of Peachtree Streets, Avenues, Boulevards, etc., around the city.

At last count there were more than 70 streets with the “Peachtree” moniker in their names.

It also bears saying that Peachtree Street, Ave and Road are all the same depending on whether the stretch is zoned as residential, commercial and/or a mix of both. But in any event, when you’re in Atlanta, GPS is your friend! (But more on this later).

What Are Some Of The Most Iconic Atlanta Landmarks?

Underground Atlanta used to be the #1 place you’d bring a visitor but not this century! Now, some of the most iconic places are newer and more polished (although there are still a handful of older landmarks you still want to see).

    Clermont Lounge

    Clermont Lounge blondie in Atlanta

This place is an Atlanta institution of the adult variety, if you get what I mean. If you’re looking for elegance, this is the opposite.

But it has been a fixture on Ponce de Leon Avenue because the place has managed to stay open despite the ups and downs of “progress” all around it.

    The Varsity

Things You Didn't Know About Atlanta

Situated on a plum plot of land in Midtown by the freeway, The Varsity has done for the chili dog what Waffle House has done for the waffle. The restaurant features a drive-in with car-side service, making it one of the last of its kind. The food is not the award variety, but it’s a must if you want to taste what Atlantans have been eating for nearly 100 years.

Centennial Olympic Park is an oasis in the middle of downtown Atlanta. One of the lasting remnants of the Atlanta Olympics (which we’ll talk about later) is a beautiful greenspace that serves as the centerpiece of downtown Atlanta.

Atlanta History: Events That Happened Here

Atlanta has been home to some of the most historic events in U.S. history. Here are some things that happened in Atlanta that you may not know about.

The Winecoff Hotel fire happened in Atlanta

    things to know about Atlanta

The Dec. 7, 1946 fire at the Winecoff Hotel (now the Ellis hotel) in downtown Atlanta is the deadliest such blaze in U.S. history. 119 people died in the fire, which helped spark huge changes in U.S.  building codes, most notably requiring mandating fire-resistant doors and firescapes.

    Atlanta Child Murders

One of the darkest moments of the cities history was when a serial killer started exacting lives of young boys and girls around the city, many of them African-American.

While the case proved as controversial as the murders, Wayne Williams was convicted of the crime, which many believe was committed by someone else. Nevertheless, it is an historic event that happened.

    The 1996 Olympics

The 1996 Olympics were the culmination of decades of goodwill and moving and shaking by the city’s powers that be. Although it was a triumphant moment when Muhammad Ali lit the torch, the event was also marred by an instance of domestic terrorism which took the form of the Olympic bombing.

Atlanta Is The Only U.S. City Destroyed In A War

Things You Didn't Know About Atlanta

During the Civil War in the spring of 1864, the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston, was holed up in Dalton, Georgia. The Union Army wanted to do something about it, amid other troublesome skirmishes taking place, so in early May, 1864, Union forces under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman began the Atlanta Campaign, a “scorched earth” policy to burn the city to the ground. The basically uncontested “March to the Sea” would destroy a swatch of Georgia.

Atlanta Has The World’s Busiest Airport

    things to know about Atlanta

More than 10 years running now (since 1998), Atlanta has had the world’s busiest airport. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, located on the line between College Park, Hapeville and Atlanta, attracts more traffic and has more airplane movements than any other airport in the world. You can also save money at Hartsfield if you strategize.

Coincidentally, Hartsfield is home to Delta Air Lines, one of the largest airlines in the world, and a major reason Atlanta is a traffic hub.

While it is true that Birmingham, Alabama is the cradle of the civil rights movement, Atlanta is generally recognized as the birthplace of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the movement’s most prominent leader.

Years before the tragic murder of his mother, Mrs. Alberta Williams King, MLK, along with a number of key leaders like Andrew Young, Hosea Williams and more, roused the nation to its senses by pioneering the nonviolent protests that finally toppled segregation across the nation. King was born in Atlanta in the Auburn Avenue neighborhood in 1929. Today that site has been recognized as historic and is just a few blocks from the King Center.

Dr. Pemberton’s partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, is credited with naming the beverage “Coca Cola.”

One of Atlanta’s most recognizable faces is joining one of its most trusted media organizations. Legendary journalist  Monica Pearson will join the AJC as the host of a new weekly video program and podcast, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution announced.

As an AJC contributor, Pearson will host The Monica Pearson Show. She will also write a regular lifestyle newsletter and column for both AJC.com and the newspaper, in addition to hosting AJC Live events, according to a news release.

The Monica Pearson Show To Premiere On The AJC

Pearson has been an icon in local broadcasting for nearly four decades, spending much of that time informing and entertaining the community on WSB Television. Currently, she hosts Monica Pearson One on One on PeachtreeTV. She will bring her talent and experience to the AJC during a time of investment and innovation.

“This is a full circle moment for me since I started my paid journalism career in 1969 as a reporter for The Louisville Times newspaper in my hometown of Louisville, KY. This is another opportunity for me to do what I love doing, interviewing people. After an interview, my slogan simply is, ‘You know the name and now you will know the person.'”

Pearson’s arrival comes as the AJC is charting a course to transform the storied 155-year-old newspaper into a modern media company. In addition to bolstering the world-class journalism the AJC is known for, the organization is also expanding its content offerings and investing in audio, video, newsletters, and live events. Pearson’s show will live alongside the AJC’s expanded podcast slate, which includes Politically Georgia and Breakdown, and it will mark the first weekly video program in the AJC’s history.

“We’ve established a mission to be the most essential and engaging source of news for the people of Atlanta, Georgia, and the South,” said AJC President and Publisher Andrew Morse, who joined the organization this year. “That effort begins here in our community. And nobody is more Atlanta than Monica. We are thrilled for her to bring her talent to the AJC.”

Pearson has won 33 regional and local Emmy awards for her work, including being inducted into the Atlanta Press Club, National Association of Black Journalists, University of Kentucky Journalism, Georgia Association of Broadcasters, and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. In addition to her broadcast career, she hosts a monthly radio segment, titled “A Monica Moment.”

Pearson’s arrival is just the latest prominent editorial hire for the AJC. Leroy Chapman Jr. was named editor-in-chief in March, becoming the first Black editor in the paper’s history. Earlier this month, Chapman announced the hiring of Sharif Durhams from the Washington Post to be the AJC’s Managing Editor for news.

Atlanta restaurant “This Is It” is set to be honored by District 10 Council member Andrea L. Boone this weekend.

Boone’s tribute to the iconic soul food eatery, This Is It! Southern Kitchen & Bar-B-Q, is in celebration of the restaurant being in business 40 years in the city of Atlanta.

Documentary Chronicles  Atlanta Restaurant This Is It

The anniversary will begin with a red-carpet premiere of the documentary “This Is It! The Miracle of BBQ” on Sunday, June 11 at 6 p.m. at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, 660 Peachtree Street NE.

The first This Is It! store in the Atlanta area was located on Campbellton Road at the intersection of Campbellton Road and DeLowe Drive in the Campbellton Plaza. The store has served as an economic development engine in Atlanta by providing thousands of jobs, including in the midst of the pandemic.

The documentary captures the life and legacy of This Is It! BBQ’s founder and CEO Shelley “Butch” Anthony III. The documentary features Atlanta’s own Bruce Bruce, CeeLo, former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, and more. It is directed, written, and produced by award-winning filmmaker Tammy Williams and fuses the current success and expansion of the restaurant to more than ten stores within the 40-year history of the family-owned enterprise.

The free, family-friendly event will feature live performances from award-winning and nationally recognized recording artists.
