In partnership with the Atlanta Ballet, R. Alexander presents Balletomane, the upcoming exhibition featuring ballerina paintings and portraits by Spain’s Antonio Torres.
The show will be on display at R. Alexander from February 1- March 2, 2018. In conjunction with Atlanta Ballet, a special opening reception will be held at R. Alexander on Friday, February 1st from 6- 9 pm and Saturday, February 2nd from 1-4 pm. A percentage of purchases will go towards the Ballet’s advancement.
Opening Reception of Balletomane: Paintings by Antonio Torres in Atlanta
Balletomane, defined as a ballet enthusiast, aptly describes Torres’ devotion to dance. Throughout his evolution as a painter, he has dedicated himself to one recurring theme: ballet. Dancers from all over the world showcase graceful poses and elegant costumes in each captivating painting. Fascinated with ballerinas’ patterns of movement and psychological dedication, Torres skillfully captures their mastery of performance by depicting their varied demeanors both on and off the stage.
While Torres portrays notable dancers from all over the world, his work is categorized into three distinct series and each inspired by a different ballerina. The Contrasts series provide striking distinctions between light and shade frequently placed in intimate settings.
Register for Balletomane here
Blue Dream paintings convey the beauty of ballet through various expressionistic techniques, while the Blue Rainbow series incorporates surrealism to depict dreamlike performances. Through this diversity, Torres captures the multifaceted aspects of ballet and its dedicated performers.
Torres personalizes private moments, and this exclusive access to intimate views offstage are a hallmark of his work. Aware of the rare circumstances accessed to him via his friendships with numerous ballerinas, Torres graciously remarks, “I thank God for having the opportunity to be surrounded by so many talents behind the scenes.” Though visually divergent, Contrasts, Blue Dream, and Blue Rainbow unite in inviting viewers behind the scenes to share his intimate point of view.

The brunch was a chance for powerful women to celebrate themselves but also remind each other that more progress is needed.
Amy Trask, former CEO of the Oakland Raiders, said that some businesses simply shouldn’t be around if they don’t provide an equal playing field.
“If a business does not hire without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, religion or any other individual characteristic, which has nothing to do whatsoever with whether a person can accomplish or succeed or achieve in business, well then that business deserves to fail.”
Those individualities I listed have no impact whatsoever on whether one can do a good job,” Trask said.
Veteran ESPN reporter Lisa Salters told AtlantaFi.com that representation makes a difference.
“In any aspect of life, it’s important to have diversity of voices. The more voices you have, the more inclusive you are, the better any product is going to be. Women watch sports, women participate in sports, women should be covering sports.”

With the opening of the Trap Music Museum in Atlanta, much attention has been given to the city’s musical heritage. Atlanta trap music owes much of its development to the artistry of the city’s underprivileged communities.
Rapper T.I. is largely credited with creating trap music, especially since he christened an album “Trap Music” back in the early part of the century. But others have tried to share some of the credit, or blame, for the music, which has grown from its Southern roots to all parts of the country.
Still, Atlanta is its birthplace. With that being the case, here are some other trap rappers you should get to know.
Trouble – Selfish
Lotto Savage – Errythang
Gunna – Top Off
Brodinski – Split
Dae Dae – Bae With Me
Shad da God – Strawberry Syrup
Duke – Better Days
Young Nudy – One Dolla
Trap music is not just an Atlanta thing. Spreading like kudzu on Metropolitan Parkway, trap music has expanded throughout the Southeast, the United States and across the world. Here are some other artists you should know about.
Hitter – Fugazi

Buddah G – Slide GMix
Lonzo Da Menace – Strictly For My Opps

The Canopy By Hilton, a new hotel on 1414 West Peachtree St. NW, opened in Atlanta in mid-December. It’s first-floor restaurant, Xhibit, opened in early January to the delight of hotel guests.
Canopy boasts 170+ rooms in a gem of a location just off the Interstate 75 corridor between 14th Street and Atlantic Station. The hotel has a number of art installations from local artists that gave the lobby and adjacent rooms a decidedly ATL flair.
Canopy hotel opens in Midtown Atlanta
The hotel’s restaurant, Xhibit Studio Kitchen & Bar, is a small but mighty restaurant helmed by chef Christian Messier. The eatery, which will serve seafood dishes, American cuisine and tasty desserts. After personally tasting the cobbler, I can say this is one of the best hotel restaurants in Atlanta.
Here are some of the best features at the Canopy hotel in Midtown:
- Just-Right rooms with comfy beds, free W-Fi and a 55-inch TV
- Xhibit features a café, bar and complimentary evening tastings
- Three meeting rooms and an elevated outdoor terrace with fireplace
- 24-hour fitness center and complimentary Canopy Bikes
The Canopy branded was first conceptualized in Iceland in 2014. Four years later, the concept was brought to the United States. Atlanta’s Canopy hotel opened just in time for the Super Bowl. For that weekend, the first in February, the hotel has only a handful of rooms left, a manager told AtlantaFi.com.
The rooms at the Canopy are all the same size and are distinguished by either two queens or a king-size bed. The layouts are drastically different though, with guests being able to have access to refillable water in the hallways.
I haven’t been to all the hotels in the ATL, but the Canopy hotel ranks pretty high among the boutique variety.

GREEN VELVET:
Change has been a constant theme throughout the successful career of Green Velvet, but as he has crossed genres, explored themes from the comedic to the serious and changed monikers, the common thread running through the music he has made for nearly two decades is its roots in and dedication to the Chicago House sound. The ongoing evolution in the music, career and life of the artist born Curtis Alan Jones in Chicago has been and will continue to be fascinating to watch and experience for his many followers.————————————————–
