7 Things To Know About Zoo Atlanta Before You Go

    7 Min Read

In Atlanta’s historic Grant Park neighborhood, Zoo Atlanta remains a top destination for family fun, wildlife education, and conservation. With over 1,000 animals representing more than 200 species, interactive exhibits, and ongoing habitat upgrades, it offers a unique experience year-round.

The zoo was launched in 1889 when a businessman was given some circus animals. It steadily built up its reputation and became what we know and love today.

Zoo Atlanta: What You Need To Know Before You Visit

    • Conservation and Education Focus: The zoo emphasizes research, with staff holding faculty positions at local universities. It offers behind-the-scenes tours, wild encounters (e.g., with lemurs), and educational programs.
    • New and Upgraded Features: A renovated African lion complex opened in April 2025, featuring enhanced habitats for the lions. The African Savanna area continues to showcase expanded habitats for elephants, giraffes, zebras, and more. The Rollins Animal Health Center (opened 2024) offers behind-the-scenes tours. Giraffe feedings are available. zooatlanta.org +1
    • Giant Pandas Note: The giant pandas (Lun Lun, Yang Yang, and their offspring) returned to China in late 2024 after the loan agreement expired. The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Giant Panda Conservation Center is currently closed, with preliminary design work underway for potential future expansions in hopes of a new agreement. Panda Cam is no longer active.

Guests can book up-close encounters with animals such as lemurs, elephants, and giant tortoises. These experiences often include guided interactions and photo opportunities.

The zoo’s staff is well-known in state academic circles. Many of the zoo’s scientific staff hold faculty appointments at Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, and the University of Georgia.

Much of their research has been published in prominent scientific journals on a national level.

Here are some things to know before you visit Zoo Atlanta.

    Is The Atlanta Zoo Free?

No, Zoo Atlanta is not free for general admission. However, it is free to some people.

All active-duty, reserves, veterans, and retired members of the U.S. military get in free with valid identification. But you may be thinking how much does it cost to get into Zoo Atlanta.

How Much Does Zoo Atlanta Cost?

Zoo Atlanta now has a policy of “timed ticketing,” which means the price varies based on the time of year. For the hotter months, here’s what you’ll typically pay:

    AgesPrice Of Entry
    Adults (Ages 12+)$25.95-$31.70
    Child (Ages 3-11)$20.70-$25.20
    Senior (65+)$24.20-$29.45
    College Student (Student ID Required)$24.20-$29.45

You can also buy a membership for $109 a year.

    But tickets here.

Do You Have To Pay For Parking At Zoo Atlanta?

You don’t have to pay for parking there, but you also have to watch where you park.

If you can’t park on-site, you have to get a space in the adjoining neighborhoods. Once the zoo parking lot fills up, most people just park off of Cherokee Avenue.

    What Are Zoo Atlanta’s Hours?

Zoo Atlanta’s hours are generally 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day, although the facility allows you to schedule your itinerary to see the animal attractions at specific times. Zoo Atlanta is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

During the warmer months, be sure to come early to beat the heat and the crowds.

What Kinds Of Animals Does Zoo Atlanta Have?

There are all types of animals there. Favorites include the regular African elephants, African lions as well as some tigers and bears you’d expect at a major metropolitan zoo, but they also have some pretty prestigious giant pandas.

Now, let’s get into some of the animals you’ll see and no doubt become familiar with when you visit Zoo Atlanta.

    Gorillas

Zoo Atlanta has one of the largest populations of gorillas in North America, allowing guests to observe and learn about these incredible primates

    Pandas

One of the main attractions are the zoo’s giant pandas. One of the most famous ones, Yang Yang, is 22 years old.

Pandas are notoriously difficult to keep alive in a regulated habitat. The zoo is one of the only places outside of Asia to continuously raise pandas successfully.

It’s no small feat. The world’s giant panda population is estimated to be around 2,000.

How To Watch The Panda Cam

Panda Cam is a popular online attraction that the zoo provides. The camera offers people a closer, behind-the-scenes look at the giant pandas devoid of much human interaction.

In this way, Panda Cam provides something very authentic.

    Here is the Panda Cam

    African elephants

Kelly, Tara and Msholo are the zoo’s famed African elephants. Their habitat is just what you’d see in the Motherland: a  pond, waterfalls and multiple opportunities to create mud wallows like they would in the new African Savanna.

    Silverback gorillas

Zoo fans have grown accustomed to Lulu, but now little Anaka has made the gorilla group a cradle of joy. The zoo also has some famous primates there, like  Pelari the orangutan and many more.

    Giraffes

The zoo’s giraffes Abu, Etana and Isooba are running neck and neck (get it?) in their competition of visitor favorite. Watch the video below to see how they get along.

Can You Host Events At Zoo Atlanta?

Yes, you can! Whether you want to have a safari-like wedding  in the grand ballroom of the majestic Savanna Hall or host a twilight dinner on the Takamenda Gorilla Deck  surrounded by gorillas, it can happen.

Your company can even to a Zoo buyout for an unforgettable evening with the colleagues.

How To Visit Zoo Atlanta For Free

One of the best ways to save money at Zoo Atlanta is to visit when they have a special event. They have several free events throughout the year as well.

    • Go when it’s free: Zoo Atlanta has free admission for Military members (proof required) and children under 3.
    • Join the Library Pass Program: Courtesy of the Georgia Public Library Service, Georgia residents can check out the Zoo Atlanta Library Pass for free admission for a family of three.

Zoo Atlanta is a great place to unwind after a long work week. One of its most popular things to do there is to ride the Zoo Train.

The train is a replica of the 1863 locomotive and can carry up to 100 adults or 140 children. If you go to Zoo Atlanta, you’ve got to ride the train!

    Final Word

Eat before you visit: The snack prices at Zoo Atlanta are on the expensive side. Make sure you grab a bite before you arrive or else you may bust your budget at the snack counter.

First, to find all the good things happening in the city this week, all you have to do is take a look at downtown or Midtown Atlanta. That’s where some of the best restaurants are as well as where the visitors, namely tourists, are.

Want to get out of the house during the day? Why not get some shopping in the city by patronizing local vendors with handmade goods, arts, crafts, candles, soaps, vintage and more.

More than just a race, the Spark 5K blends fun, fitness, and friendly competition to support two local nonprofits making a tangible difference: The Kyle Pease Foundation and Malcolm Mitchell’s Share the Magic Foundation.

Spark 5K: Fourth Annual Celebration of Community and Inclusion

Over the past three years, the event has steadily grown in both participation and fundraising impact, drawing runners, walkers, in-chair athletes, corporate teams, and community supporters from across the Atlanta area.

Share the Magic Foundation, founded by former NFL player Malcolm Mitchell, focuses on literacy initiatives that bring joy, books, and educational empowerment to children facing adversity.

“The Spark 5K represents everything our foundation believes in — inclusion, teamwork, perseverance, and the power of community,” said Kyle Pease, Co-Founder and Director of Inclusion at The Kyle Pease Foundation. “We’re excited to be part of this annual event yet again, and seeing our athletes, corporate teams, families and friends is incredibly powerful. It truly shows how much stronger our community becomes when we rally for a shared purpose.”

TSA Wait Times Atlanta Airport (ATL) 2026: Live Averages, Real-Time Updates & Pro Tips to Skip Lines

    6 Min Read

Traveling through Atlanta-Hartsfield Jackson International Airport means you’ve got to deal with ATL security wait times. Unfortunately, the airport is known for notoriously long wait times due to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints being backed up with travelers.

Why Are TSA Wait Lines So Long Right Now?

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the world’s busiest airport by passenger volume, is currently facing extended TSA security wait times primarily due to ongoing staffing shortages among TSA officers.

These shortages have been exacerbated by a partial federal government shutdown that began Feb. 14, causing TSA employees to miss two full paychecks — although they have gotten paid now.

As a result, average wait times at main checkpoints have climbed to 20–30 minutes during peak hours, with some lines exceeding 40 minutes as early as 6 a.m.

How Long Does It Take To Get Through TSA At Atlanta’s Airport?

    Annual Passenger Traffic:

    • Pre-COVID-19: In 2019, over 110 million passengers passed through Atlanta’s airport, making it the busiest airport globally in terms of both passenger numbers and total flights.
    • Pandemic Impact: During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, passenger traffic dropped significantly, with around 42 million passengers.
    • Recovery: In 2021, passenger numbers began to recover, with approximately 75 million passengers.
    • Recent Years: By 2022, ATL handled around 93.7 million passengers, continuing its recovery from the pandemic and retaining its status as one of the world’s busiest airports.
    • In 2023, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport recorded approximately 104.7 million passengers, maintaining its position as the world’s busiest airport by passenger traffic.

Best Tools to Check TSA Wait Times at Atlanta Airport (ATL)

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the world’s busiest, so knowing current TSA security wait times can save you stress and help you arrive at the right moment. Here are the most reliable tools available right now:

    1. Official ATL TSA Wait Times Tracker (Best Real-Time Option)

    • Link: atl.com/times/
This is the airport’s own real-time dashboard. It provides minute-by-minute updates on wait times at different checkpoints (Domestic North, South, International, etc.). It’s the most authoritative source when it’s actively updated — but it goes down a lot.

    2. MyTSA App (Official TSA Tool)

The MyTSA app shows current and historical wait times, crowd levels, and lets users submit their own reports (GPS-verified at the airport). It also includes security tips and what you can bring through screening.

    3. AJC Atlanta Wait Times Tool (Crowd-Sourced Reports)

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution built this user-reported tool. Travelers at the airport can submit their wait times via GPS, helping create a live picture of conditions. Great supplement when official displays are delayed or paused.

    4. Airline Apps & Websites (Delta & Others)

Delta frequently shows estimated wait times for ATL on its app and airport wait times page. Other airlines may also pull similar data. Check your airline app before heading out.

    5. Additional Helpful Resources

    • OnAirParking TSA Wait Times: — Aggregates data for ATL specifically.
    • Reddit r/Atlanta Megathreads: Real-time passenger reports during peak periods or disruptions.

Pro Tip: Combine tools — check the official ATL site first, then cross-reference with MyTSA and AJC for the most accurate picture. Peak times are usually 5–9 a.m. and 4–7 p.m. Arrive 2–3 hours early for domestic flights and earlier for international.

How To Speed Through TSA Checkpoints at the Airport

Getting through TSA quickly at the airport can save time and reduce stress. Here are some strategies to help you expedite the security screening process:

Read our guide on whether TSA PreCheck is worth it.

    1. Enroll in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

    • TSA PreCheck: This program allows you to use dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes, which often have shorter lines and require less hassle (you don’t need to remove shoes, laptops, liquids, belts, or light jackets). The enrollment process includes a background check and in-person interview. Once approved, it’s valid for five years.
      • Cost: $78 for a 5-year membership.
    • Global Entry: If you travel internationally often, consider Global Entry, which includes TSA PreCheck benefits as well as expedited customs processing when entering the U.S.
      • Cost: $120 for a 5-year membership.

    2. Use CLEAR

    • CLEAR: CLEAR is a private service that allows you to bypass the ID check lines by verifying your identity using biometric data (fingerprints and eye scans). You’ll still need to go through physical screening, but it can dramatically shorten your wait time before the screening process.
      • Cost: $189 annually (discounts may be available for certain credit cards or frequent flyer programs).
      • Tip: CLEAR + TSA PreCheck is one of the fastest combinations to get through security.

    3. Travel During Off-Peak Times

    • Early Mornings or Late Nights: Airports are generally less crowded early in the morning or late at night, making security lines shorter.
    • Avoid Peak Days: Busy travel days, such as Fridays, Sundays, and holiday travel, tend to have longer wait times. Traveling on midweek days (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) can be less hectic.

    4. Check Wait Times in Advance

    • Use the MyTSA app or websites like FlightAware to check real-time security wait times at your airport. Some airports, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, have their own apps that provide wait times for TSA security checkpoints.

    5. Be Prepared for Screening

    • Pack Smart: Place your liquids, electronics, and other items that need to be screened separately in easily accessible parts of your carry-on to avoid digging through your bag in line.
      • Liquids: Follow the 3-1-1 rule (3.4-ounce containers in a 1-quart bag per person).
      • Electronics: Remove larger electronics like laptops from your bag unless you’re in TSA PreCheck.
    • Dress for Efficiency: Wear slip-on shoes and avoid metal objects like large belt buckles or jewelry. Place these items in your carry-on until after you pass through screening.
    • ID and Boarding Pass: Have your ID and boarding pass (or mobile boarding pass) ready before reaching the checkpoint to keep things moving smoothly. Going abroad? Have your passport.

    Final Word

Travel wait times in Atlanta will likely continue to trend upwards as global travel demand increases. Hartsfield-Jackson remains a crucial hub for domestic and international flights, especially given its role as a major connecting point for Delta Air Lines.

R&B Royalty Returns Home: Usher and Chris Brown Announce Joint Tour

    3 Min Read

Atlanta, GA – In a move that has the city’s music scene buzzing louder than a Friday night at Magic City, hometown hero Usher Raymond and R&B powerhouse Chris Brown officially announced their highly anticipated joint tour on Friday, April 10.

Dubbed the “R&B Tour” (a clever play on “Raymond & Brown”), the stadium spectacle promises to deliver nights of pure R&B dominance, high-energy performances, and unforgettable collaborations.

Usher and Chris Brown To Tour; Atlanta Poised for Epic Homecoming

The flashy announcement dropped simultaneously on social media with a high-octane teaser video. In it, the two superstars rip through city streets on motorcycles as ecstatic fans chase behind, capturing the raw excitement building around this pairing.

No full date list has been released yet, but sources and fan speculation point to major stadium stops across North America this summer and fall, with Atlanta almost certainly anchoring the run as a multi-night celebration.

    Atlanta Roots Run Deep

For Atlanta, this tour feels personal. Usher, the ultimate ATL ambassador who put the city on the global R&B map with classics like Confessions, has deep ties here—from his early days at LaFace Records to legendary performances at Philips Arena (now State Farm Arena) and recent sold-out runs.

Chris Brown, though raised in Virginia, has become an adopted son of the A through countless collaborations, late-night studio sessions in the city, and high-profile appearances.

Just months ago, in October 2025, Brown brought Usher out as a surprise guest during the Atlanta stop of his Breezy Bowl XX Stadium World Tour.

The moment was electric: Brown praised Usher as “the greatest” and his inspiration, while the two traded hits like “Superstar” to a roaring hometown crowd. That reunion lit the fuse for what fans are now calling the ultimate R&B summit.6

Local promoters and State Farm Arena insiders are already bracing for record demand. One Atlanta-based industry source told reporters, “This is bigger than a concert—it’s a cultural homecoming. Two kings from the same bloodline of ATL sound bringing the whole city out.”

    What Fans Can Expect

Expect a setlist stacked with decades of chart-toppers: Usher’s smooth grooves (“Yeah!,” “U Got It Bad,” “My Boo”) colliding with Breezy’s high-octane anthems (“Forever,” “With You,” new singles like the freshly dropped “OBVIOUS”).

The two have hinted at joint performances and possible new music dropping ahead of the tour.

Chris Brown also announced a new album arriving next month, adding even more fuel to the fire.20

Social media has exploded since the announcement, with #RBTour and #RaymondBrown trending nationally. Atlanta fans are leading the charge, flooding comments with demands for multiple hometown dates.

“This is what Atlanta deserves,” one local posted. “Usher and Chris turning State Farm into the R&B Super Bowl.”

Tickets are expected to go on sale in the coming weeks. For Atlanta music lovers, this joint tour isn’t just another show—it’s a full-circle moment for two artists who helped define the city’s signature sound for a new generation.

Stay locked to Atlanta news outlets for the first on-sale dates. The A is about to turn all the way up. 🔥

    Yeah… it’s going down.
