Dying your hair can be intimidating for the first-timer, but you can do it. With a little patience and effort, you can be a do-it-yourself colorist in your own home.
This article is going to cover the best hair dyes as well as what are the top hair dye brands as well as what to know about side effects.
In This Article:
- Best Hair Dye Brands
- Best Hair Dye
- Best Box Hair Dye
- What is The Best Hair Color Without Side Effects?
- Best Purple Hair Dye
- Best Drug Store Hair Dye
Let’s talk a little about the best hair dyes. What you want to do is choose a color that is close to your natural hair color.
Best Hair Dye Brands
First off, let’s take a look at some of the best hair dye brands based on customer reviews. These are in no particular order, but rather based on Amazon reviews:
- Clairol
- Garnier
- Revlon
- Madison
- Vidal Sassoon
- L’Oreal
Of course, a brand is only as good as your experience with it. With that being said, let’s cover some of the best hair dyes on the market for DIY colorists.
Best Hair Dye
The truth is that the best hair dye for you is one that doesn’t break you out. Try it out on a small portion of your hair a day or two before you use it to see if you’re allergic.
After you strap up with your gloves (yes, gloves) and protect your shoulders and floor from dye, you’ll want to get the following supplies ready:
- Small bowl
- Brush
- Comb
- Sink
After you’ve prepared your supplies, it’s time to dye your hair. Here are the best products, according to real-life reviewers who’ve used them:
SoftSheen-Carson Dark and Lovely Go Intense Ultra Vibrant Color on Dark Hair, Golden Blonde 10 – $5.74
Here’s what one Amazon reviewer says about this product: “I’m really loving the colour.”
Just 5 Women’s 5 Minute Permanent Hair Color, Jet Black – $7.69
Here’s what one Amazon reviewer says about Just 5 hair dye: “Color does hold for 6 weeks. No stains or discoloration on the skin. I have been using this product for the past 3 years.”
Best Box Hair
When it comes to box hair dyes, here are the best ones, according to real-life reviewers:
Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Hair Color Creme, 63 Light Golden Brown (Brown Sugar) – $6.97
Here’s what one Amazon reviewer says about Garnier Nutrisse hair dye: “Fades fairly quickly, but beautifully. Hair was bleached beforehand. Will probably purchase again. Doesn’t transer too much after 2-3 washes. Was prettty purple when initially dyed, faded to pink, then rose gold, then to a light gold with a rose tone.”
What Is The Best Hair Dye Without Side Effects?
Many hair dye products cause unwanted side effects from rashes to hair loss. One of the main reasons for this is that ammonia is a main ingredient in many hair dyes.
For that reason, what you want in a hair dye is one without ammonia or peroxide. Look for brands that are certified organic and are 100% natural for your hair.
That way, you won’t have to worry about any side effects.
Best Purple Hair
If you want to try grape shades in your head, here is the best purple hair dye:

Metro Atlanta resident and NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal says he’s done being called a “celebrity,” because of the way they treat people.
“These people are out of their freaking mind, how they treat people, what they do, what they say,” O’Neal told the New York Post.
Shaquille O’Neal Denounces His Celebrity-Ness
As a result, O’Neal says he doesn’t want to be called a celebrity anymore. “That’s never been me. I never want to be looked at like that.”
He did acknowledge that many celebrities get stereotyped, but he also said, “Most celebrities get stereotyped because most of them are out of their damn mind.”
“I don’t want to do that. I’m a regular person that listened, followed his dreams, made it,” he adds. “But just because I made it doesn’t mean I bigger than you. Just because I made it doesn’t mean I smarter than you. Just because I have more money than you, doesn’t mean that I’m better than you.”
Shaq said he’s never been that way and never will be. “I don’t want to be in that category with those people,” he says.
So how far is O’Neal willing to go with it? Talking to the Post, he says, “I denounce my celebrity-ness today. I’m done with it.”
O’Neal has always been a man of the people. Now, living in Henry County, Georgia, about 25 minutes outside Atlanta, O’Neal continues to work with TNT on its NBA content while making incredible business moves.
He owns the iconic Krispy Kreme doughnut shop on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Midtown Atlanta and has taken an executive position with Papa John’s. But he’s still a humble person at heart.

Kendall Rae Johnson has had a green thumb for as long as she can remember. It wasn’t that long ago. She’s 7 years old.
The South Fulton girl recently received a proclamation as Georgia’s Youngest Certified Farmer, courtesy of the City of South Fulton.
The proclamation was issued on September 28, 2021 with city officials in tow.
Kendall Rae Johnson Is Georgia’s Youngest Farmer
“Agriculture, by far, remains the state’s largest industry,” Mayor William Edwards said at the event, according to 11Alive. “Still, it remains an industry with few women. With her enthusiasm, determination and love for gardening, Kendall is about to change that. We are proud of such an accomplished young lady at such a young age.”
Kendall is quite literally the future of Georgia farming. The Atlanta girl is serious about growing fruits and vegetables and even has her own website, agrowkulture.com.
With food insecurity becoming a burgeoning problem not only in faraway places, but right here in Atlanta, Kendall’s endeavors are gaining a lot of attention — and support.
She is currently lining up partnerships to raise awareness about the need to cultivate farmland in metro Atlanta.
Kendall’s love for gardening stems from her fascination with watching things grow. “Kendall got a chance to see a collard green stem placed in the dirt. A couple weeks later, we see foliage! Wow! We can do that,” Ursula Johnson, Kendall’s mother told WSBTV.
But it also originated with her grandmother. “Although Kendall Rae doesn’t quite remember her great-grand, she remembers hearing her saying, “Don’t throw my collard green stems away, put them back in the dirt.” That’s when it all started,” it says on Kendall’s website.
Kendall is not the only African-American dedicated to growing crops from God’s green Earth. Metro Atlanta has some deliberate farmers who are doing what they can to keep the discipline alive. Here are some black farmers in Atlanta you may not know about.

If you’re looking to sell your home, Zillow may make it a whole lot easier, but it depends on who you ask.
A viral TikTok alleges that the real estate company is buying up homes and raising prices, making homeownership unaffordable to untold numbers of people. Zillow has denied the claims and calls it “misinformation.”
For a while now, Zillow has been making initial cash offers on eligible homes in more than 20 cities, including Atlanta, Georgia.
The move is part of the company’s Zestimate, which has been changed due to new demands in the real estate industry. In this article, we’ll look at what Zillow’s Zestimate is all about as well as how you can sell your home.
What Is Zillow’s Zestimate?
Since 2006, Zillow has offered the Zestimate, which was a valuation tool to see how much your home was worth.
The Zestimate is now the company’s home-buying service through which customers can sell their home directly to Zillow.
The way it works is that qualifying homeowners can get the certainty of a cash offer by way of their Zestimate. The company aims to facilitate the buying and selling of homes totally online.
That means the era of having random strangers show up at your home may be a thing of the past.
How You Can Get Paid From Your Zestimate
Zillow is now pairing the Zestimate with Zillow Offers so that you can get cash in your hands more quickly.
The way this can work out for a seller is that they can find out what Zillow is willing to offer for their home before it even goes to market. This not only speeds up the process, but avoids long wait times for your property, which could cause it to look stale on the market after a while.
With a Zestimate, the home seller gets an initial cash offer if their property s deemed an “eligible home” in one of about 20 U.S. cities.
Final Thoughts
You may be wondering what it takes to buy a home in Atlanta, as the forecast for this year predicted, prices in certain areas are increasing. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find a nice home in metro Atlanta.
The first step in the process is to get pre-qualified for a mortgage.
If you’re already pre-approved for a home loan, it signals to the loan officer, real estate agent and seller that you’re ready to purchase — and not playing around.
Atlanta has one of the best real estate markets in the country, with affordable housing in every quadrant of the city. Large backyards, manicured parcels and strong neighborhoods with ample dining amenities make it one of the top places for transplants.
There’s also ample opportunities to rent your home for cash. Keep up with what’s going on in Atlanta’s real estate scene on our Real Estate page.
