Atlanta’s largest newspaper recently made history by naming its first black editor-in-chief!
Leroy Chapman Jr. has begun his tenure at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, succeeding longtime Editor Kevin Riley, who announced his retirement Thursday.
AJC Names First Black Editor-In-Chief
As the organization’s top news executive and first Black editor in chief in the newspaper’s 155-year history, Chapman will oversee the newsgathering, programming, features, and opinion teams as well as the editorial teams responsible for video, audio, newsletters and events. Chapman will report to AJC President and Publisher Andrew Morse.
Riley, one of the longest-tenured editors of a major daily publication, will retire later this year. He will assume the role of editor at large during a transition period.

Who Is LeRoy Chapman Jr.?
Chapman is currently managing editor at the AJC, overseeing daily news gathering, breaking news, coverage of key news topics including state, local and federal government, politics, education, public safety, transportation, Georgia’s economy and the environment. Sports was added to Chapman’s responsibilities earlier this year. He joined the AJC in 2011 from The State in Columbia, S.C.
Since joining the AJC, Chapman has shepherded some of the publication’s most high-profile stories, including the efforts to undermine Georgia’s 2020 election results, the court cases of teachers and administrators charged in the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal, and the investigation into Atlanta’s affordable housing crisis during a time of economic uncertainty. Chapman is a U.S. Navy veteran and has been a journalist for 28 years. He lives in Gwinnett County with his wife Dawn and is a father to three adult children. The Chapmans’ oldest child is a relative the couple adopted when he was 13.
“The significance of this moment isn’t lost on me. This kind of opportunity is why African Americans come to Atlanta,” Chapman said. “Kevin has been excellent at being visible in our communities and hearing from people. I am looking forward to getting out into the community and understanding more about how the AJC can continue to serve audiences and improve our city.”
Riley started his career in 1983 at the Dayton Daily News, which is also owned by Cox Enterprises, and was editor in Dayton for four years before coming to Atlanta in 2011. In his 12-year tenure, he emphasized public service, investigative journalism, and political coverage, as Georgia claimed a leading role in national politics. He oversaw the largest reporting staff covering Georgia’s governor and legislature.
“I have never felt more inspired about the future of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution,” Riley said. “It’s been an honor to lead these incredible journalists and to serve the citizens of this state and city for the past 12 years. I will miss being a part of this storied organization, but I know its finest days are ahead.”

Tech pre-accelerator Geekz Ventures recently announced its class of 10 startups for its inaugural cohort program, including some with ties to Atlanta.
The city’s tech industry continues to be one of the most progressive in the nation on many fronts.
The Growth pre-accelerator program supports Black and Latinx-led early-stage companies from any industry, with a focus on MediaTech, Entertainment, and Mobile Technology. Applicants were assessed on their product, video pitch, potential impact, and capacity to build a scalable business.Kicking off in March 2023, the highly competitive 10-week program offers training, mentorship, and resources to help founders build successful businesses. Geekz Ventures provides access to world-class mentors and coaches, peer-to-peer networking, and an equity-free grant with the possibility for follow-up funding.
Topics such as branding, scaling operations, knowing your numbers, product market fit, and emotional intelligence in leadership will be covered.
In addition, founders participate in workshops and one-to-one office hours. They will also gain media exposure, including opportunities to be featured on the digital news platform, UrbanGeekz.
Geekz Ventures is founded by award-winning BBC-trained journalist-turned-serial entrepreneur Kunbi Tinuoye. Former WeWork Enablement executive Brandon Wilkins will serve as the program manager.
“We were inundated with applications,” said Tinuoye.” After a rigorous application process, we have selected founding teams that we truly believe can build sustainable and scalable brands.”
Geekz Ventures program manager Brandon Wilkins said, “What’s exciting me the most is being able to witness up-and-coming black-founded tech startups. Black people still represent the tech space in low numbers, and I’m excited to see the innovation and growth.”
Speaking about one startup that has caught his eye, Wilkins cites The Barter Shop. Aimed at creating an inclusive micro-economy for small businesses and solopreneurs, the startup was founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the home of Black Wall Street. For Wilkins, “with the history of what happened there, this takes determination and great bravery.”
Mentors and coaches include Mandela SH Dixon, the former CEO of All Raise, a non-profit on a mission to accelerate the success of female and non-binary investors, founders, and operators in tech.
Gary Stewart, MD of Techstars NYC powered by J.P. Morgan joins Hodge Dixon alongside other high-profile leaders in the media or tech startup ecosystem.
Other mentors include Kathryn O’Day, partner at Atlanta Ventures; Marguerite Pressley Davis, founder of Finance Savvy CEO, Aniyia L. Williams, Principal at Omidyar Network, and Terry (Kojo) Oppong, Creator Manager at LinkedIn, among others.

The hiking trails are also pretty steep, but nothing too bad if you are a seasoned hiker.”

Bathhouse was clean,” says one visitor. “They have several INDIVIDUAL bathrooms with a private shower, toilet and sink. It’s not community like a locker room. I absolutely love that!!! Number 68 was the best spot for us. It sits adjacent to the Bathhouse and our neighbors were not on top of us. The park has plenty of hiking paths, a man made beach and swimming area, paddle boating and a beautiful lake and waterfall. They have signs posted for black bears and copperhead snakes. We saw none, thank God! Beautiful and serene place. Would definitely return!”
5. Brasstown Bald

As of 10/5/22, there’s a $7 per person entrance fee. The walk-up trail is a nice paved path beginning between the gift shop and restroom facility. (Highly recommend the gift shop, lots of cool and unique items!) It’s about a half mile trek going constantly uphill to the top (a slight workout!), but a shuttle bus is also available if preferred.”

Trails are extremely moderate for an experienced hiker, but present diverse landscape. The trails were well marked, mostly clear from a lot of foot traffic and dirt. Look out for armadillos! We saw two while we were here. You’ll hear them rustling around. We enjoyed going all the way around the loop and then ending with a peek at both waterfalls which weren’t too full but couldn’t have fomo. Lots of stairs to the waterfalls as expected. Camping, RV spots, cabins+ available for an extended stay. The trails were lively with people and dogs enjoying the mild Tuesday afternoon. I do recommend! Views still available right off from the parking lot if you are not feeling a hike. Bonus is that the park also has a disc golf course.”
7. Fort Mountain State Park

Since we have visited all 56 Tennessee State Parks we thought we would visit Georgia State Parks. We are glad we went here. We enjoyed seeing the 4 story look out tower. It was a hike to it but not to hard. There is a lot of history here and several plaques are placed so we could read them. From the tower we hiked to the over look. Wow. This has amazing views here. We also drove around the park and we saw a nice lake and campground. There is another trail that goes to a waterfall which is nice. Overall great experience. Can’t wait to go back.”
8. Tallulah Gorge State Park
View this post on InstagramHere’s what one visitor says about Tallulah State Gorge Park: “What an absolutely beautiful park. We spent two days at the park, walking trails and enjoying the sights and water, and we still didn’t get the opportunity to see everything. But what we did see was stunning!
There are miles of trails you can hike. Some are located on the north side and some on the south side of the gorge. Additionally, you can cross the gorge via the suspension bridge, and even go to the bottom of the gorge. That said, we didn’t go to the bottom – it’s only 100 passes a day, though they are free – but I imagine it’s awesome. And we are hoping to do that ourselves next visit. I highly, highly recommend you been in decent to good shape if you plan to go to the bottom because there are a lot of steps (over 1000 total down and back up) that you must climb to do so. We opted to go down to the suspension bridge and back up and it was quite a work out on its own.”
9. Sweetwater Creek

We only took the Red Trail to see the Mill Ruins on a quick visit, but I do recommend that one for beginner hikers! The path is nicely packed and wide for comfort without much of a grade. I was a little disappointed in all the fencing around the ruins keeping you from getting a closer look, but I totally understand the purpose of it being there. The water was lovely and calming also. I would recommend this spot for a nice, relaxing afternoon in nature.”
10. Stone Mountain Park

Beautiful landscape, everywhere you look. We arrived very close to dark and were thrilled to find out that they close at midnight! The Lift to the top and Gift Shop were certainly closed by the time we arrived, but we were able to navigate a well-lit sidewalk, to get a bit closer to the carving. Really pretty area, very nice folks. Absolutely worth the stop!”
