Atlanta Mayor Andre Young said, ““After returning home from the White House to Georgia, the Carters redefined the purpose of a post-presidency, never seeking riches and always being guided by their faith and values. They labored to end diseases that others ignored and advance democracy where others saw no hope. Sojourning from their modest home in Plains, they sought peace in war-torn regions and built houses with Habitat for Humanity.”

Brian Kemp said, “Marty, the girls, and I join all Georgians and the entire nation in mourning the loss of former President Jimmy Carter.As the only American president thus far to come from Georgia, he showed the world the impact our state and its people have on the country. And as a son of Plains, he always valued Georgians and the virtues of our state, choosing to return to his rural home after his time in public office.”
City of Atlanta Council President Doug Shipman statement following the passing of Jimmy Carter on Sunday: “The passing of former President Jimmy Carter is indeed a sad day but also a day to celebrate an extraordinary person and life of service. I had the opportunity to support his work as a member of the Carter Center Board of Directors…and seeing him work up close was an honor and a window into his deep love of humanity, peace and an eternal faith that the world can be better.”
The Atlanta City Council released the following statement about Carter:
“An embodiment of character and earnestness, President Carter’s life was marked by remarkable achievement, humanitarianism, and a passion for human rights. Inevitably, he will be remembered for his ascent from peanut farmer to president, but he also leaves behind a record of true accomplishment in domestic and international affairs. After leaving office, he continued advocating for democratic principles and dedicated himself to charitable causes, including founding the Carter Center in 1982, and building homes for Habitat for Humanity. He created incalculable memories for those in Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and across the world. We extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family and everyone mourning this significant loss.”
“The Atlanta Braves are deeply saddened by the passing of President Jimmy Carter,” the team said in a statement. “President Carter was a testament to the best America, and Georgia, can produce. He served both his country and home state with honor his entire life.
“While the world knew him as a remarkable humanitarian and peacemaker, we knew him as a dedicated Braves fan and we will miss having him in the stands cheering on his Braves. Our deepest condolences to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.”
President Joe Biden released the following statement:
“Over six decades, Jill and I had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well.”

The Atlanta Falcons defeated the New York Giants 34-7 behind a solid effort from rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The Falcons made a concerted effort to keep Penix upright, allowing him to finish the game without being sacked.
Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards and one interception, though the pick wasn’t his fault. In the second quarter, he connected with tight end Kyle Pitts near the end zone, but Pitts bobbled the ball, allowing Giants cornerback Cor’Dale Flott to make the interception.
Penix Wins in Falcons Debut
The Falcons registered 22 first downs, 10 of which came through the air. They were successful on 8 of 14 third-down attempts and converted 2 of 4 red-zone opportunities—an area where they had struggled in recent weeks under former starter Kirk Cousins.
“He went out and played nearly flawless football, keeping the game clean and giving us the chance to secure the win,” said Falcons coach Raheem Morris of Penix.
Cousins had thrown nine interceptions in his last five games, with only one touchdown pass. During that stretch, the Falcons went 1-4, including a four-game losing streak that saw them drop from 6-3 and in control of the NFC South to fighting for a playoff spot.
The Falcons regained the lead in the NFC South after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.
