Kickstarter recently announced a new program for independent creators to get funding. It’s called Kickstarter Patrons. In partnership with the program, Pinewood Atlanta Studios, located in nearby Fayetteville, is looking to back filmmakers in Georgia.

Pinewood, the studio that gave us “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Black Panther,”Pitch Perfect 3,” “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” and more, is promising $10,000 to movies with teams that have at least one female filmmaker who resides in Georgia.

Pinewood says it is seeking movies “with originality of premise, clarity of narrative, and personal vision,” and part of the package will include mentorship, networking opportunities, cash and access to the “Pinewood Atlanta Studios ecosystem of vendors.”

Pinewood, which is the U.S. branch of the UK-based Pinewood, Shepperton and Pinewood Studio Wales, has been booming in recent years. The brand has opened up studios in international places, such as Canada, Malaysia, and the Dominican Republic, in recent years.

Kickstarter says, “Each Patron makes a public commitment to support campaigns on Kickstarter that align with their mission. Patrons will support projects just like any other backer — through single pledges, and in order to bring them one step closer to reality. There is no application process for Patron funding. All projects launched on Kickstarter are eligible, and Patrons will work closely with Kickstarter to find projects that are inspiring and in line with their missions.”

  • Major Expansion Set For Atlantic Station

    1 Min Read

If you’ve been to Atlantic Station recently, you’ll see cranes in the sky, the most ominous sign that something new is afoot in the mixed-use development, which debuted in 2005 to much acclaim. Since then, the area was softened as alternative housing has sprouting on the city’s southwest side and small-time criminals made the place a nuisance.

But now, Atlantic Station is about to undergo a major expansion. After 13 years as a crown jewel of Midtown development, the site is about to get an overhaul that will include  a mesh of vintage and modern-style architecture. At the same time, there will be some strategic demolition of some structures best left in the past.

Welcome to Atlantic Yards. Hines says the development will consist of 500,000 square feet of progressive office space in twin buildings. “Hines will work with Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture (HPA) as the design architect and Wakefield Beasley & Associates (WBA) will be the architect of record,” the company says on its website.

The amenities will include new retail development, quarters dedicated to fitness, dining, roof-top terraces, bike storage and collaboration areas.

  • Meet THEA: Metro Atlanta Chamber Launches Video Streaming Platform

    2 Min Read

Atlanta is serious about luring and keeping young talent in the city. So serious that  city officials have launched its own video streaming platform. The Metro Atlanta Chamber is using ChooseATL, its 2015 tech initiative, to unveil the new platform THEA this week at SXSW.

“One of the things that is both special about Atlanta and desired by the millennial generation is diversity and diversity of people, but also diversity of thought, industry, culture and subculture,” said Kate Atwood, executive director of ChooseATL, tells Adweek. “In Atlanta it kind of makes it hard as a marketer to narrow in on a niche identity, but we also know right now it’s something to celebrated,” she said.

Among some of the early brands using THEA include  startup hub Switchyards,  Blossom, a diversity-geared content creator, and marketing agency Moxie . Atlanta officials feel that more tech start-ups will gravitate to the platform as word spreads.

“I knew I had to be involved because I am a creator in Atlanta, I want to grow in Atlanta, I want to bloom in Atlanta so it just made sense,” Williamson tells Adweek. “THEA really accelerates the opportunity to spread the word about what we are doing, but it also allows us to prove what we are trying to do. We have this platform that is behind us that supports us and their mission is solely dedicated to making sure the world knows about the creative in Atlanta. That’s special.”

City reps are launching THEA on Monday, March 12 in Austin, Texas. The RSVP says this:

Over the course of the past year, the Atlanta region embarked on a bold new project, the launch of the world’s first city‐based streaming video platform, THEA. This panel is a discussion with some of the key players behind the scenes in getting the platform off the ground. Hear perspectives from the heads of product, technology, and marketing for THEA, and gain some valuable insights into the future of cities, over‐the‐top video services, and entertainment marketing.

“Let’s be honest with ourselves: This is the largest economic development deal in the history of America,” Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle told the AJC. “It would require action by the Legislature if we are successful. And I’m very optimistic that we can land Amazon in the state, and we’re in great position to do that.”

The Inc. quoted Jeremy Bodenhamer, who runs a $13 million shipping and logistics firm,: “We believe they will select Atlanta,”he was quoted as saying. He cited the area’s deep well of tech talent as well as the region’s reputation as harboring people with top logistical knowledge (UPS as well as Lockheed is based here) a top reason.

The agency is betting that as the ninth-largest transit system in North America with over 126,427,817 annual trips, some companies will want to hawk wares to MARTA’s 404,600 daily riders.
