The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Blade reboot, starring Mahershala Ali, currently has no confirmed filming start date, as the project has been removed from Disney’s 2025 release schedule (previously set for November 7, 2025).
The highly anticipated Blade movie has been beset with delay after delay after having originally planned to begin filming in Atlanta last spring. Marvel Studios thought their fourth hire as lead writer — Michael Green — would be their last, but the Blade Runner scribe left the project just like the others.
Also getting a huge facelift is the script, which lead actor Mahershala Ali has been trying to reconcile for more than two years now.
The film, which will have an R rating, will be helmed by Yann Demange, who previously directed Lovecraft Country. Other than that, pretty much everything else is in the air.
That’s a far cry from how Marvel and Disney saw the project two years ago. That’s when Marvel honcho Kevin Feige sat down with Entertainment Weekly and confirmed that Blade would restart in Atlanta around May 2023. Didn’t happen.
Marvel Delays Filming of Blade In Atlanta Yet Again
“It’s going well. Our director Yann [Demange] is down in Atlanta right now. Cameras roll in, like, the next 10 weeks or so,” Feige told Entertainment Weekly at the time.
That was good news coming one year after the popular franchise took an extended break mandated by the studio.
Marvel Studios had to pause the filming of the Blade movie to search for a new director.
The film, which stars Mahershala Ali in the title role, parted ways with director Bassim Tariq in September 2022. Instead of quickly tapping someone to fill the role, Marvel temporarily shelved the project.
Why Was Blade Project Postponed By Marvel Studios?
Tariq’s removal from the project had a lot to do with how the production schedule was going, according to THR.
“Due to continued shifts in our production schedule, Bassam is no longer moving forward as director of Blade but will remain an executive producer on the film,” Marvel told THR. “We appreciate Bassam’s talent and all the work he’s done getting Blade to where it is.”
Disney confirmed months ago that the new Blade movie had begun filming in Atlanta, Georgia. The project went through fits and starts though due to script rewrites.

After Marvel Studios’ tremendous response to its Phase 4 movie schedule, Blade has been a priority of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As you may know, the Blade franchise had a very popular run in the 1990s with Wesley Snipes in the lead role. Now, however, things have changed.
What Is The New Blade Movie About?
Blade is basically about a half-vampire anti-superheroes that stalks the underworld. While the film was originally going to feature Ali prominently in the title role, several revisions have pushed the character back as a sort of guiding force as younger stars shine in the spotlight.
Last December, Ali was on board with the changes, telling EW he was “sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that.”
While the MCU has not been shy about making major changes to its superhero story arcs, there is no word just yet on what the plot of the new film will be.

Two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali has been cast for the lead role in the new Blade movie. He joins an all-star cast that reads like a who’s who of new Hollywood, although we’ve only heard of a handful of actors as cast members.

Blade was originally shooting footage around Atlanta in late summer 2022, including at Tyler Perry Studios, for Disney. The film is filming under the pseudo-name “Perfect Imprints.”

The Polo Ralph Lauren for Oak Bluffs collection, launched on July 24, 2025, is a limited-edition capsule that celebrates the cultural and historical significance of Oak Bluffs, a coastal town on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, known as a haven for Black communities for over a century.
The collection honors the town’s legacy as a place of joy, community, and Black excellence, blending coastal leisurewear with collegiate style inspired by HBCUs.
It is part of Ralph Lauren’s Design With Intent efforts, which aim to create products that authentically reflect American heritage and diverse cultural narratives.
The collection is accompanied by a campaign that includes a short documentary, A Portrait of the American Dream: Oak Bluffs, which was released on YouTube on July 24, 2025. Here it is below.
The documentary will be screened at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival on August 8, 2025, followed by a panel discussion on narrative change and racial healing.

The tragic death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner has shocked longtime fans of the actor and thespian, who lived in Atlanta in recent years.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner lived in Atlanta during his multi-season run on the TV show The Resident, where he played Dr. AJ “The Raptor” Austin.
His ties to the city began while filming the show, which used Atlanta’s High Museum of Art as a filming location.
Shameka Coleman, an Atlanta resident who worked as an extra on The Resident, said that Warner was ever the professional on set.
”He was kind to everyone who met him,” she said. “It was almost like he was a calming influence to the whole cast. What I remember is that he was just real classy.”
After The Resident ended in 2023, Warner maintained a strong connection to Atlanta, frequently returning for performances, speaking engagements, and community advocacy.
Soon he put down roots here. His last video on social media was of him driving around Atlanta, musing about his daughter and how thankful he was for life.
How and When Did Malcolm-Jamal Warner Die?
Warner died on July 20, 2025, at the age of 54, in an accidental drowning while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica.
According to reports, he was swimming at Playa Cocles in Limón Province when he was caught in a strong ocean current.
Bystanders attempted to rescue him, but he was declared lifeless by the Costa Rican Red Cross upon reaching the shore. The official cause of death was confirmed as asphyxia by submersion due to drowning.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner: Early Years
Malcolm-Jamal Warner began his acting career at a young age, driven by a combination of natural talent, early exposure to the arts, and encouragement from his family.
Born on August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Warner was raised by his mother, Pamela Warner, who recognized his creative potential early on. She enrolled him in acting classes and workshops as a child, fostering his interest in performance.
Warner’s entry into professional acting came through his participation in community theater and school productions.
His charisma and stage presence caught the attention of casting directors, leading to early roles in television. At age 9, he made his TV debut in a 1980 episode of the series Trapper John, M.D. This small role marked his entry into the industry.

The success of The Cosby Show propelled him to fame, cementing his career in acting. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he continued to build on this foundation, taking roles in TV shows like Malcolm & Eddie and guest appearances in various series, while also exploring theater and directing.
His early start and breakout role on The Cosby Show were pivotal in establishing his long-term career in entertainment.
As he grew, Warner explored his creativity with spoken word and music, even releasing an album and performing with a band.
Atlanta Years
Warner had been coming to Atlanta for years for acting roles.
He was cast as co-lead on Reed Between the Lines opposite Tracie-Ellis Ross. Craig Johnson, an extra on the short lived show, which was filmed in Atlanta, remembers Warner as a gracious actor.
“He didn’t treat you any different no matter if you were an extra, a grip or a producer. Just a real humble person.”
Later cast on the hit show The Resident, Warner moved to Atlanta for filming and fell in love with the place.
Becoming a husband and father, Warner lived in a quiet personal life around metro Atlanta while stepping out for creative purposes.
He was often seen performing around town, including at coffee shop Buteco in Grant Park.
He was deeply involved in the city’s arts scene, performing with his bands Biological Misfits and Miles Long, and participating in events like the Atlanta Jazz Festival and the Beloved Community Awards.
Information related to his funeral and memorial services have yet to be announced.

The City of Atlanta is partnering with the PATH Foundation to create a city-wide trail plan called Trails ATL.
Trails ATL: What We Know So Far
Trails ATL is an ambitious citywide trail expansion plan initiated by the City of Atlanta in partnership with the PATH Foundation to enhance the city’s walkability and connectivity through a comprehensive multi-use trail network.
Approved unanimously by the Atlanta City Council on June 16, 2025, the plan aims to create a 535-mile trail network, ensuring 95% of Atlantans have access to safe, inviting trails within a 10-minute walk or wheelchair trip by 2052.
How Large Will Trails ATL Be and Where Will It Connect?
The initiative seeks to improve transportation options, reduce car dependency, and enhance quality of life by connecting neighborhoods, parks, schools, MARTA stations, and commercial hubs. It aims to make Atlanta one of the most trail-connected cities in the U.S., potentially surpassing current greenway networks.
The plan includes adding 420 miles of new trails to the existing 100+ miles already built or funded, creating a network that integrates greenways, protected street trails, and multi-use paths designed for all ages and abilities, including wheelchair users, walkers, runners, cyclists, and scooter users.
Trails ATL: Phase 1
Phase 1 focuses on areas like Buckhead, Lakewood, Adams Park, and southwest Atlanta’s Emerald Network, connecting underserved areas to key destinations. Trails like the Virginia Trail near Piedmont Park and the Airport Trail south of downtown are highlighted.
