In what is believed to be a first for Georgia, Atlanta Public Schools is going to let girls play flag football in middle school. The girls’ sport will commence in 2019, APS said.
The move would make APS a pioneer in girls’ football, as only a handful of school districts around the nation offer the sport. All 13 of the school district’s middle schools will have a team next fall, APS said in a news release.
“Atlanta Public Schools is excited to partner with USA Football, ESPN and the Atlanta Falcons to be one of the first school districts in the country to provide another outstanding athletic opportunity through flag football for our middle school girls,” said APS Superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen said in a written statement. “I can’t wait to have my first workout with one of our teams!”
“Atlanta Public Schools’ forward thinking will foster increased participation opportunities and positive experiences for a new group of student-athletes, setting a great example for school districts nationwide,” said USA Football CEO Scott Hallenbeck.
APS has the support of local and national sports luminaries in offering girls flag football.
“The Falcons have long appreciated the fan support of girls across our region – now it’s our turn to root for them,” said Vice President, Community Relations, AMBSE Chris Millman was quoted as saying. “We’re happy to support Atlanta Public Schools as the district builds its middle school girls flag program. This continues an exciting trend of girls flag across the greater Atlantaarea and we’re proud to ensure these programs have the budget assistance they need for the good of their student-athletes.”

More than 30 years ago, Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird scorched and torched the Atlanta Hawks, scoring a season-high 60 points. Larry Legend started off hot and got unconscious in the late third and fourth quarters.
The Celtics won the game, which was played when Hawks icon Dominique Wilkins was a young player finding his identity in the hard-scrabble NBA. Take look at the shot selection, scoring plays and oohs and aahs from the crowd.
That time Larry Bird scored 60 against the Atlanta Hawks (VIDEO)
It’s a cliche, but this is “one of the greatest performances ever.
Bird was already an NBA superstar at the time. The French Lick, Indiana native was the fuel that powered the mighty Celtics in the league’s hey day. Bird was always a great all-around player, but this display against the Hawks is when he made it look easy.
Glad we don’t have to relive those days in ATL. Besides, ATL’s Dominique Wilkins later went toe to toe with Bird and the Celtics in a number of memorable battles at the Omni as well as in Boston Garden.
Now we have super rookies like Trae Young to swish threes on opposing players. Y’all ready for the 2018-19 Atlanta Hawks?

Atlanta has become many things to many people in the last few years, a movie mecca, a real estate capital, even must-visit place for Southern cuisine, but it has yet to fully embrace its artsy side.
Art buyers have historically had to trek up to the Northeast or even out west to find fine art worthy of their homes and offices. But entrepreneur Connie Zerden has set out to change that.
Zerden, the founder of Art Buckhead, is launching a pop-up art show on November 2-3 on Miami Circle. Art Buckhead will feature a curated selection of artists chosen, unusually, for their stylistic differences. “Typically, gallery shows focus on a specific style,” says Zerden, “which results in buyers running all over town to shop art. Art Buckhead, in contrast, provides exceptional talent in a range of styles, all in one stop.”
The artists were chosen from various backgrounds, including art education and museum fields. Emerging artists were chosen through a blind submission process. “Think of it like watching The Voice,” Zerden says in a press release. “An artist’s age, looks, and background should not impact their success. Talent should impact their success, period.”
Zerden knows how to put on a show. In a former life, Zerden served as vice president at Showtime Networks. Her love of art motivated her to accept the challenge of finding out why many of her friends bypassed the Atlanta market when looking for art.
“It makes no sense that Atlanta is not a “first stop” for art. We have SCAD turning out world-class talent; we have the High, yet we do not have a reputation as an art powerhouse. That needs to change.”
Aside from one artist, all the others come from around ATL, she said. “The goal is for this show to grow every year, providing more and more opportunity for artists and collectors from throughout the U.S. to view Atlantaas an art destination.”
Art Buckhead is an independent art show held at Park Studios, 690 Miami Circle NE, Suite 600, Atlanta, GA 30324.
Opening Reception: November 2, 5pm to 8pm
Gallery Hours: November 3, 10am to 2pm
