Atlanta Approves Largest-Ever Budget for Beltline

    3 Min Read

The Atlanta Beltline has a new budget and it’s the biggest in the project’s history.

What Is the Atlanta Beltline’s 2025 Budget?

The Beltline’s board of directors and Invest Atlanta have approved the passage of Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.’s $172 million budget for fiscal year 2025.

“This is a historic and exciting time for Atlanta Beltline as we get closer to completing the trail while meeting important goals,” Beltline President and CEO Clyde Higgs said in a statement. “The people-powered project is a destination for cultural connection, quality of life and economic equity. Supported by our new budget, we will exceed our goals for affordable housing, accelerate the pace for trail work and invest in more economic opportunities for all.”

The Atlanta Beltline’s fiscal budget has seen significant changes from 2020 through 2023:

    1. 2020: The budget was $28.6 million.
    2. 2021: The budget increased to $50.7 million.
    3. 2022: The budget further increased to $93.5 million.
    4. 2023: The budget reached $117 million.
    5. 2024: The budget was set at a historic $153.6 million.

This budget growth reflects the increasing investments in trail construction, affordable housing, and land acquisition. By the end of 2024, 80% of the mainline Beltline trail loop is expected to be complete or under construction. Additionally, there are significant allocations for real estate acquisition and housing development to meet the goal of creating or preserving 5,600 affordable housing units by 2030.

The Atlanta Beltline has been an ambitious plan since its inception.

How Did The Atlanta Beltline Begin?

The idea for the Atlanta Beltline was conceived by Ryan Gravel, an urban planner and Georgia Tech student. In his 1999 master’s thesis, Gravel proposed transforming the underutilized rail corridors encircling Atlanta into a multi-use trail and transit system. His vision aimed to address issues of urban sprawl, transportation, and connectivity in the city. Gravel’s thesis laid the groundwork for what eventually became the Atlanta Beltline project, gaining support from community leaders, city officials, and residents over time.

The Atlanta Beltline is a comprehensive redevelopment project transforming a 22-mile loop of historic rail corridors that encircle Atlanta into a network of public parks, multi-use trails, and transit options. The project aims to connect 45 neighborhoods and provide a variety of recreational, transportation, and cultural amenities. Key components include:

    1. Trails: Multi-use trails for walking, running, biking, and other activities.
    2. Transit: Plans for light rail or streetcar transit to improve connectivity.
    3. Parks: Creation and enhancement of parks and greenspaces along the Beltline.
    4. Development: Encouraging mixed-use developments, affordable housing, and economic growth in the surrounding areas.
    5. Public Art: Incorporating art installations and cultural activities to enhance the urban environment.

The Beltline is designed to promote sustainable development, improve quality of life, and provide new opportunities for community engagement in Atlanta.

When Is the Atlanta Beltline Slated To Be Completed?

The Atlanta Beltline project is expected to be fully completed by 2030. This timeline includes the development of all 22 miles of trails, transit infrastructure, parks, and other planned improvements.

The project has been progressing in phases since its inception, with several sections already completed and open to the public. The completion date may be subject to change based on funding, construction timelines, and other factors.

New Art Installation On Display In Midtown Atlanta

    2 Min Read

A new mural is on display in Midtown Atlanta’s Colony Square — and it’s a “nice time” for it.

Created by artist Hyland Mather, the artwork titled “Nice Time” is a large-scale, three-dimensional mural made entirely from recyclable plastics collected throughout Atlanta and by ALPLA employees.

The installation is a key component of ALPLA’s Plastic Reimagined initiative, designed to demonstrate the principles of the circular economy and the potential of recycled materials.

Describing the vision behind his creation, Mather said, “‘Nice Time’ is about the time we live in. For all of the incredibly challenging obstacles ahead of us, humans are amazing. Right now, despite all of the injustices, protests, and concerns, we still live on a magnificent planet in an awe-inspiring time. This piece is about the moment, with the hope of an even brighter future.”

“‘Nice Time’ was inspired by a Portuguese expression, ‘If you don’t have dogs, you have to hunt with cats,’ which captures the ingenuity and thrift that farmers use in getting a job done even when answers aren’t easy to find,” continued Mather. “Reimagining our relationship with common and necessary materials is part of our responsibility in the world. It’s a Nice Time to wake up, be thankful, and be the change we need to be to help our plane

A celebration took place on June 7th, where attendees gathered for opening remarks from an ALPLA executive and the artist, followed by the completion of the art piece.

The installation will be on display throughout Summer 2024 and aims to inspire the community to see a world where the full value of all objects is utilized.

A delegation of business leaders and government representatives recently led a week-long economic development tour to South Korea with plans to ignite international investment in Fulton County.

Develop Fulton, a major collaborator behind the overseas initiative, aims to position the county, particularly South Fulton, as the epicenter of unlocked business expansion opportunities in the United States.

Aside from South Fulton, Georgia as a whole has become known as a premier location in the nation for business and economic development.

“Fulton County is the nucleus of smart growth that represents an area uniquely positioned to attract major attention for future business development opportunities,” said Georgia State Senator and Develop Fulton Chairman Brandon Beach. “This mission-driven trip to Korea taps into growing and emerging industries poised to call Fulton County home.”

During the multi-city business development trip from April 20-27, the Fulton delegation engaged in a series of insightful meetings and tours with elected officials and leading business executives across various industries, including logistics, artificial intelligence, biomedical, advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles, and robotics. With a goal to foster strong relationships and showcase the county as a hub for strong business prospects, leaders emphasized Fulton’s strategic positioning, diverse industry landscape, skilled workforce, and exceptional quality of life.

“As ambassadors and economic development evangelists for Fulton County, we remain laser-focused on leveraging every opportunity to highlight the countless ways Fulton remains the gateway for growth in our region,” said Kwanza Hall, Develop Fulton Vice Chairman. “We’re putting a special focus on highlighting the untapped opportunities that abound in South Fulton. By establishing, building, and nurturing these global business relationships, our hope is for these efforts to yield transformative and historic investments across our county and unlock limitless business opportunities.”

Championed by Fulton County Chairman Robb Pitts, the delegation also included College Park City Councilman Joseph Carn, East Point City Councilman Joshua Butler, and Director of Economic Development for the City of Fairburn Sylvia Abernathy. Pitts shared that the trip to Korea marked an opportunity to forge global connections and explore new possibilities, with the goal of collaboratively shaping a prosperous future for Fulton County.

“Fulton County is the catalyst for growth and economic prosperity across this region and the state of Georgia, and it is incumbent upon us to seek new business prospects, domestically and internationally,” said Pitts. “We must remain intentional in our efforts to build on the undeniable momentum that has attracted major corporations and industries to Fulton County. The signing of our joint MOU marks a milestone in this international business effort.”
