Bankhead Seafood Has Re-Opened: Here’s What To Know

    CJ Johnson cj-johnson-2 November 17, 2024
    4 Min Read

The celebrity owners of Bankhead Seafood have finally opened the historic eatery on Atlanta’s west side.

The restaurant officially opened on Sunday, Nov. 17 after a long hiatus as Atlanta’s go-to spot for affordable seafood in the community.

Bankhead Seafood founder dies days after restaurant’s re-opening.

The new Atlanta restaurant has been revived by rappers, entrepreneurs and now restaurateurs Killer Mike and T.I.

The two businessmen purchased the eatery in 2019 after it had closed down.

A post shared by UATL (@itsuatl)

    When Is Bankhead Seafood Re-Opening?

The new Bankhead Seafood is set to open on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024. The restaurant initially had plans to open in early 2021, according to Michael “Killer Mike” Render, who has done extensive press about the eatery.

The seafood restaurant closed abruptly in 2018 after 50 years in operation when longtime owner Helen Harden admitted that she just didn’t have the stamina to run the business like she used to.

“I felt like I wasn’t giving my customers a good service when they had to wait a little longer than they usually had to,” she told 11Alive.

Here is what we know about the re-opening of Bankhead Seafood:

    • The restaurant grand opening is still a ways away, but a Bankhead Seafood food truck is in the works, according to WABE.
    • The new Bankhead Seafood has plans to expand the 4,200 square foot building and even add a rooftop.
    • Renderings for the new restaurant have been released.

Why Are T.I. And Killer Mike Opening Bankhead Seafood?

The Atlanta rappers and businessmen both grew up in underprivileged areas of Atlanta. Bankhead Seafood has long been an institution on the city’s west side.

The two entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to re-invest in their communities and give back.

“I partnered with [Atlanta rapper] Killer Mike and other developers to purchase the Bankhead Seafood building,” Tip told INC. magazine. “There is a corner where I have an assemblage of lots that I acquired with another partner. There’s another, bigger lot that I am acquiring on my own. I’ve gone in on six buildings and spent more than $2 million. I don’t have private equity financing or anything like that. It’s my personal finances and sweat equity.”

Talking to APSTV, Killer Mike said the Grove Park restaurant is very important to the city.

“Bankhead Seafood is a product of this community. And T.I. and I buying it shows that this community has produced good stock,” he said. “We’re not waiting on other people to save us. We’re not waiting for some grand fund to come.”

“We’re taking money we’ve went out and earned through hard work and bringing it back in this community bringing jobs and opportunity.”

    Where Is Bankhead Seafood Located?

Bankhead Seafood is located at 1651 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway SW Atlanta, Ga. 30318. Here’s a map to help you find it.

    Key Features:

    1. Expanded Space: The building is being enlarged to 4,200 square feet with the addition of a rooftop dining area, providing a modern touch to the traditional establishment.
    2. Community Focus: The revival seeks to reinvest in the neighborhood, preserving its cultural significance while creating jobs and opportunities in the rapidly gentrifying area.
    3. Historical Legacy: Bankhead Seafood served the community for over 50 years, becoming a local institution known for its delicious $5 seafood boxes. The founders and new owners aim to maintain this rich heritage.
    4. Modern Adaptations: Plans for expanded parking and a potential food truck service ensure accessibility and convenience for customers.

The restaurant is positioned as both a nostalgic homage and a beacon for community growth amidst the changes in Atlanta’s Westside. This blend of history and innovation makes it a must-visit for both old fans and new patrons.

    Final Word

“It’s been a part of my life as long as I’ve been on earth,” Render told WSBTV. “If you’re writing a show or a book about Michael Render and his family, (Bankhead Seafood) would definitely be one of the characters.”

Spicy chicken that is piping hot to the touch and taste is in fashion right now in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m talking about the best hot chicken around these parts.

In this article, we’ll show you the best restaurants in Atlanta that serve fried chicken on their menus. We’ve added reviews from real customers so that you can gain more insight.

Who Has The Best Hot Chicken In Atlanta?

Atlanta, long a Southern eater’s paradise, quickly adopted the hot chicken fad as Beard-level chefs began to offer their own takes. Here are some of the best ones we know about:

        Argosy

Here’s what one reviewer says about Argosy. “Fabulous, as always. They’ve got this Covid thing down and are still serving refreshing drinks and delicious food in a super spacious outdoor ‘yard’. They’ll get you chairs once you order, which you do just inside the patio door. Then they bring your order to the table packaged to-go so you’re completely self sufficient. Someone pops by here and there to check in. With cooler temperatures on the horizon, this is going to be a go to.”

        Southbound

        5394 Peachtree Rd, Chamblee, GA 30341 | (678) 580-5579

        231 Peachtree Street Northwest A-05 The Mall at, Atlanta, GA 30303 | (404) 996-2837

        best hot chicken in Atlanta

Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is the longest-running chain serving hot chicken. After expanding in the Atlanta market a few years ago with a restaurant downtown, Gus’s has big plans to open up several more locations in metro Atlanta.

Here’s what one reviewer says about Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken: “I’m from out of town and wanted to have some fried chicken in Atlanta and ended up here on a whim. Extremely glad I did. Honestly, best fried chicken I’ve ever had. The skin is delightfully crispy, not too heavily spiced. The meat was amazingly tender and juicy. Service was great and homey, I felt like I was treated like a regular even though it was my first time there.”

        Hattie B’s

        299 Moreland Ave NE Atlanta, Georgia 30307 | (678) 888-4884

best hot chicken in Atlanta - Hattie B's

Hattie B’s is on the eastside of Atlanta, but you wouldn’t know it: People come from far and wide to experience the hot chicken.

Here’s what one reviewer says about Hattie B’s: “Have eaten here twice. Parking can be tricky but is well worth it. Tried the hot and damn hot, both were quite tasty. The pimento mac and cheese and greens are scrumptious. The fries could use a little work. Great and prompt service, but if you order ice cream make sure they do bring it out to you and don’t forget!”

        DurtyBird’s Hot Chicken

        3330 M.L.K. Jr Dr SW, Atlanta, GA 30331 | (404) 748-1053

DurtyBirds hot chicken in Atlanta is the best.

Here’s what one reviewer says about DurtyBird’s Hot Chicken: “The service was amazing and the food was out of this world!! Would highly recommend to anyone!! Coming back soon.”

        Joella’s Hot Chicken

        2955 Cobb Pkwy SE #910, Atlanta, GA 30339 | (770) 956-0919

Joella's Hot Chicken in Cobb County

Here’s what one reviewer says about Joella’s Hot Chicken: “We dined here for the first time tonight. It was my favorite hot chicken. The chicken was tender and moist. I also tried the crispy kale salad, and that had a lot of flavor as well. I really appreciated the craft soda bar, that was a great touch. For dessert we both enjoyed some pie in a jar, which was delectable. The whole staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. I would recommend this place to anybody!”

        Scoville Hot Chicken

4969 Roswell Rd #220, Sandy Springs, GA 30342

Scoville Hot Chicken opens in Atlanta

Scoville Hot Chicken opened in March 2021 to rave reviews.

Here’s what one customer says about Scoville Hot Chicken. “Anyone who gave this restaurant anything below a 5 star rating must have misclicked or does not like chicken. After touring Nashville and eating at multiple staple hot chicken places, I can say that this was better than all of them. The “hot” spice level was hot enough to make me feel it for the rest of the day but not unbearable. The chicken itself was crispy on the outside and very juicy. Fries were superb, sandwich had many toppings that were not found on most others. We received the food quickly and the workers were very nice. 11/10 food, 11/10 experience.”

        What Does Hot Chicken Mean?

The term “hot chicken” refers to the cooking method applied to fried chicken. The “hot” variety has to do with the spices added to the batter or even injected into the poultry.

When someone orders hot chicken, it is understood that the food will have a reddish color and be spicy or “hot.”

What City Is Known For Its Hot Chicken?

Nashville, Tennessee is the undisputed king of hot chicken, especially because the tasty method originated there. But we have to say, that Atlanta is making inroads when it comes to hot chicken.

Atlanta restaurants have long excelled at crafting all sorts of delicious chicken-based dishes. Yes, hot chicken is the rage in Atlanta’s dining scene right now. But so are chicken and waffles and regular, schmegular restaurants that served slammin’ fried chicken.

Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11 in the United States, honors military veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Originally known as Armistice Day, it marked the end of World War I, as the armistice with Germany took effect on November 11, 1918, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. In 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to honor all American veterans, both living and deceased, who have served in times of war and peace.

Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died in military service, Veterans Day celebrates all veterans, recognizing their sacrifices and contributions to the nation’s security and freedom.
