MARTA Rapid A-Line Faces Continued Delays

    4 Min Read

Atlanta’s first bus rapid transit (BRT) line, now officially branded as the MARTA Rapid A-Line, is poised to reshape connectivity in South Atlanta, linking Downtown to the vibrant neighborhoods of Summerhill, Peoplestown, and the Atlanta BeltLine’s Southside Trail.

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the MARTA Rapid A-Line, including the timeline on when it will be done.

What Is the MARTA Rapid A-Line?

The MARTA Rapid A-Line, formerly known as the Summerhill BRT, is a transit project that spans a 5-mile roundtrip route starting at Downtown’s Five Points station and ending at the Carver station near the BeltLine’s Southside Trail.

With 14 stops, 85% dedicated bus lanes, and 60-foot articulated electric buses operating every 12 to 15 minutes, the line promises rail-like speed and efficiency.

Key connections to MARTA’s heavy rail system at Five Points, Georgia State, and Garnett stations will enhance accessibility to major institutions, employment centers, and emerging residential hubs. The project also includes upgraded traffic signals, transit signal priority, level boarding stations, and real-time arrival information, ensuring a seamless rider experience.

Here is the project map, according to MARTA:

    MARTA A-Line map

When Will the MARTA Rapid A-Line Be Completed?

However, recent updates indicate that the highly anticipated project, initially slated for a summer 2025 opening, has encountered significant hurdles, pushing full completion to fall 2026.

Despite these setbacks, the $123 million initiative remains a cornerstone of Atlanta’s transit-oriented future, with a partial opening planned for April 2026 to accommodate the FIFA World Cup.

    Why the Delays?

Construction, which began in fall 2023, has faced unexpected challenges, inflating costs from an initial $58 million to $123 million. Unforeseen discoveries, including shallow utility lines and an abandoned underground parking garage in Downtown, have disrupted progress.

Notably, work at the South Downtown station (Mitchell Street at Forsyth Street) was paused after crews unearthed shallow water lines and a forgotten parking lot, while trolley tracks found on Hank Aaron Drive added further complexity. MARTA is coordinating with utility agencies and the City of Atlanta to address these issues, with utility relocation and roadwork improvements ongoing.

Periodic lane closures, traffic detours, and sidewalk disruptions are expected, particularly along MLK Jr. Drive, Mitchell Street, and Hank Aaron Drive, with construction hours from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Despite delays, the Rapid A-Line is a critical piece of Atlanta’s transit expansion, funded by a USDOT TIGER grant and the More MARTA 2040 Program, a half-penny sales tax initiative approved by voters in 2016.

The project aims to bridge neighborhoods historically divided by highway construction, fostering equitable access to jobs, affordable housing, and amenities. Local leaders, including Carter president and CEO Scott Taylor, highlight its role in sustaining Summerhill’s growth, where over $850 million in development, including a new Publix, has already taken root. “A key component of a thriving neighborhood is accessible transportation,” Taylor noted, emphasizing the BRT’s potential to drive continued investment.

Community impacts are significant, with MARTA ensuring homeowners and businesses maintain property access during construction. Residents along affected routes, particularly on Hank Aaron Drive between Ormond Street and Ridge Avenue, will receive 72-hour notices for any water service disruptions.

The agency is also engaging the public through newsletters, social media, and community meetings to keep stakeholders informed.

While the revised timeline has sparked some frustration, MARTA remains committed to delivering a transformative transit line.

    Final Word

A partial opening in April 2026 will ensure service for the FIFA World Cup, with full operations expected by fall 2026. As Atlanta continues to grow, the Rapid A-Line stands to redefine mobility in South Atlanta, spurring transit-oriented development and connecting communities like never before.

  • Karlie Redd opens Red Room Bistro in Atlanta

Reality TV Star to Open 2nd Atlanta Restaurant

    4 Min Read

Reality TV star and serial entrepreneur Karlie Redd, known for her vibrant presence on MTV’s Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, is set to make waves in the Atlanta dining scene with the grand opening of her latest venture, Red Room Bistro, which will feature “American Soul Caribbean-infused” cuisine.

When Is Red Room Bistro Opening in Atlanta?

Red Room Bistro is slated to open its doors on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

Located at 255 Trinity Ave in the heart of Downtown Atlanta, the luxury lounge and restaurant promises to deliver an upscale dining experience infused with Southern, American, and Caribbean flavors.

Red Room Bistro marks Redd’s second restaurant venture in the Atlanta area, following the success of Johnny’s World Famous Chicken and Waffles, which she co-owns with singer Ne-Yo and chef Crystal Smith in College Park.

The new establishment, a collaboration with renowned restaurateur “Ace,” is a rebranded version of the former Monaco Hookah Lounge and aims to offer a unique blend of fine dining and vibrant ambiance.

Inspired by Redd’s father and late stepmother, who owned a successful restaurant for decades, Red Room Bistro is designed to be more than just a place to eat—it’s an experience

“With Red Room Bistro, I wanted to create more than just a restaurant. I wanted to create an experience,” Redd said in a recent statement. “This will be a vibe unlike anything else in Atlanta, where great food, atmosphere, and unforgettable moments all come together.”

What’s On The Menu at Red Room Bistro?

The restaurant’s menu will feature a diverse array of dishes, including tapas-style offerings, Caribbean-inspired cuisine, and Atlanta’s beloved staple: wings.

The space, curated by designer Ty Young, boasts a sultry red color palette that pays homage to Redd’s name, creating an upscale yet inviting atmosphere perfect for romantic dates, girls’ nights out, or lively gatherings with friends and family. Operating hours will be Tuesday through Saturday from 5 PM to 2 AM and Sunday from 5 PM to midnight, with a special “Bunnies and Bubbles Brunch” planned for Sundays from 12 PM to 4 PM.

Red Room Bistro has already generated buzz with a successful soft opening last week, and the official grand opening will kick off with a red-carpet event from 1 PM to 2 PM, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony from 2 PM to 3 PM on September 28. The event is expected to draw local celebrities, food enthusiasts, and fans of Redd’s dynamic persona.

Redd, a Trinidadian-raised entrepreneur, emphasized the cultural significance of the bistro, noting that it merges her and Ace’s love for food and fellowship. “This is about family, culture, and creating a space where people can connect over incredible cuisine,” she shared. The restaurant is poised to become one of Atlanta’s premier dining destinations, blending elevated cuisine with exceptional hospitality.

Following the success of Johnny’s Chicken and Waffles, which opened in 2020 and expanded to a second location in Midtown in 2022, Redd continues to solidify her reputation as a savvy businesswoman.

Her ability to balance her entertainment career with entrepreneurial ventures showcases her dedication to leaving a lasting mark on Atlanta’s vibrant culinary landscape.

For those eager to experience Red Room Bistro, reservations are now available through OpenTable. As Downtown Atlanta prepares to welcome this bold new addition, Karlie Redd’s Red Room Bistro is set to redefine fine dining with a cultural twist, offering a space where food, music, and community converge.

    Final Word

Karlie Redd’s new food spot adds to the stable of celebrity-owned restaurants in Georgia’s largest city. If you’re not into the fame, you can also head to Midtown, where the best restaurants on the Beltline all have excellent customer service and food. What separates them from many of the other spots is that they’re on the urban playground called the Beltline.

The ATL has other cool eateries as well. If you’re gluten-free, there’s plenty of options. Same goes for keto-friendly restaurants or Asian fare in Atlanta.

Cool Things To Do In Opelika / Auburn, Alabama

    4 Min Read

About 2 hours from Atlanta is a dynamic Alabama city called Opelika. We frequent it often as it’s between our two destinations of Atlanta, Georgia, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

If you’re ever in central Alabama, you might wonder what’s there to see and do in Opelika.

Where Does Opelika Get Its Name?

Opelika gets its name from its Native American origins. In the 1830s before the Natives were forced from the land, the area was known by its Muskogee name, “Large Swamp.”

While it’s no longer a large swamp, Opelika slowly but surely became a city due to the traffic a nearby railroad stop brought to the area. Now, thanks to nearby Auburn, the area is bustling with activity all times of the year.

Here Are Some Cool Things To Do In Opelika/Auburn

    Visit Walk-Ons Sports Bistreaux

3041 Capps Way, Opelika, AL 36804

Walk-Ons Sports Bistro in Opelika, Alabama.

One of the best restaurants you’ll find in Opelika is Walk-Ons, which was started by two former LSU athletes. The restaurant features some great fried seafood dishes that are true to its Cajun roots.

We had the Seafood Platter, Sweet Potato Fries, Eddys Sangria and more.

Here’s what one customer says about Walk-Ons. “Delicious! We sat at the bar and enjoyed an adult beverage. (Raspberry lemonade, I highly recommend) Our service and food was great. We definitely will back again. Great atmosphere for the whole family. Arcade games for the kids and TVs with games for the men to watch.”

    Good Times Bowling

    750 E Glenn Ave, Auburn, AL 36830

    Goodtimes Bowling in Auburn, Alabama.

Although it’s not technically in Opelika, Good Times is close enough. The bowling alley features plenty of games, lanes and a full bar with some pretty decent food.

    Buc-ees

    2500 Buc-ee’s Blvd, Auburn, AL 36832

    Buc-ees opens in Auburn, Alabama.

Perhaps you’ve heard of Buc-ees? It’s a very successful mega-gas station (120+ fueling stations) that has a ginormous amount of cooked and frozen food all themed around a beaver mascot. Did we mention that Buc-ee’s is open all night long?

When we went to Buc-ees I tried all I could, including the Beaver Nuggets, the Brisket Sandwich, the Sliced Brisket, the coffee, the Chicken Sandwich and more.

    Chewacla State Park

124 Shell Toomer Pkwy, Auburn, AL 36830

Chewacla State Park in Auburn, Alabama

For a more serene and natural look at the area, you’ve got to check out Chewacla State Park. Known as a great fishing spot, Chewala State Park features a 26-acre lake where you can swim, fish and get some boating in.

    Jordan-Hare Stadium

    251 S Donahue Dr, Auburn, AL 36849

    Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama.

If you’re around the Opelika/Auburn area anywhere from September to early December, you’ll no doubt get swept up in some football, Auburn football to be exact.

The sights and sounds of Jordan-Hare Stadium, one of America’s largest stadium’s (88,000+ capacity), are one of the wonders of the Southeast. Come for the football, stay for the victory cries of “War Eagle!”

    Final Word

Opelika and Auburn both make up a progressive and diverse area of Alabama. The university’s presence has risen the profile of the community and also brought some great places to eat and things to do to the area. If you’re driving down I-85, stop on by!

Because of its location, Atlanta, Georgia is one of the most convenient places to travel to and from. A large part of that is because Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is so accessible.

Not only is it the world’s busiest airport, but it’s state-of-the-art in every way. If you’re interested in traveling around Atlanta via car or even on scooter, here’s what to know.

  • Beauty in Black season 2 how to watch on Netflix

Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black Season 2 Ignites Netflix

    6 Min Read

On Thursday, Sept. 11, Netflix unleashed the long-awaited Season 2 of Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black, and Atlanta’s film scene is buzzing louder than a sold-out night at Magic City.

Filmed right here at Tyler Perry Studios in Southwest Atlanta, this soapy thriller picks up the tangled web of betrayal, ambition, and family feuds that hooked millions in Season 1.

Atlanta’s Drama Dynasty Returns with Vengeance and Power Plays

With Part 2 dropping today—eight episodes of non-stop twists—the series reaffirms Perry’s grip on the streaming world, blending high-stakes corporate intrigue with raw street drama that feels tailor-made for our city’s vibrant pulse.

The series held casting calls in Atlanta for some key scenes, just like last time. Season 1 of Beauty in Black was a breakout smash, racking up 24.9 million views in its second half of 2024 and claiming the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English-language TV list.

It followed two women from opposite sides of Atlanta’s tracks: Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams), a resilient exotic dancer clawing her way out of a toxic world, and Mallory (Crystle Stewart), the glamorous but cutthroat executive steering the Bellarie family’s Beauty in Black hair-care empire.

Their paths collided in a whirlwind of scandals, from underground trafficking rings masked as strip clubs to boardroom backstabbing over faulty products. The two-part release—Part 1 in October 2024 and Part 2 in March 2025—left fans reeling from cliffhangers like Kimmie’s sister Sylvie’s kidnapping and a shocking marriage proposal that flipped the family power structure upside down.

Now, Season 2 (billed as Part 3 overall) dives headfirst into the fallout, with Kimmie emerging as the ultimate underdog-turned-overlord. Fresh off marrying the ailing Bellarie patriarch Horace (Ricco Ross) in a hospital-bed bombshell, she’s no longer just surviving—she’s reigning as the new Head Bellarie in Charge (HBIC).

    Watch the trailer here:

How To Watch Beauty in Black

To watch, you’ll need an active Netflix subscription. Here’s a breakdown of the available plans (prices as of September 2025; subject to change and vary by region):

    PlanPrice (USD/month)Features
Standard with Ads$7.99Ad-supported viewing; streams in Full HD (1080p); 2 simultaneous streams; downloads on 2 devices.
Standard$17.99Ad-free; streams in Full HD (1080p); 2 simultaneous streams; downloads on 2 devices; extra member slots available.
Premium$24.99Ad-free; streams in Ultra HD (4K) where available; 4 simultaneous streams; downloads on 6 devices; spatial audio; extra member slots available.
    • No Free Trial: Netflix discontinued its free trial in the U.S. in 2020, so a paid plan is required to start watching.
    • How to Sign Up: Visit netflix.com, create an account, and select a plan. You can cancel anytime.
    • Device Compatibility: Stream on smart TVs, phones, tablets, computers, or gaming consoles via the Netflix app. Offline downloads are supported on mobile devices.

“Sons, this is your new stepmother… and she’s also your new boss,” Horace declared in that jaw-dropping finale, thrusting Kimmie into the CEO role and disinheriting his scheming sons, Roy (Julian Horton) and Charles (Steven G. Norfleet).

But power like that doesn’t come cheap. As Kimmie navigates her role as COO, she faces a viper’s nest: Horace’s vengeful ex-wife Olivia (Debbi Morgan), beauty mogul Mallory plotting her downfall, and the family’s shadowy ties to human trafficking that threaten to drag them all under.

From Atlanta Streets to Global Screens: The HBIC’s Rise

The trailer, dropped by Netflix in August, teases Kimmie’s evolution into an “unstoppable force of vengeance.” She’s trading her dancer’s heels for boardroom stilettos, rescuing her kidnapped sister Sylvie while exposing the Bellaries’ dark underbelly. “If you thought Season 1 was a wild ride, you’re not ready for Season 2,” Perry told Netflix’s Tudum, emphasizing Kimmie’s arc as a testament to never underestimating the underdog.

Expect more murders, steamy betrayals, and Perry’s signature cliffhangers—plus a deeper dive into the family’s Chicago-based empire, though the gritty Atlanta nightlife vibes remain front and center.Filmed amid the buzz of our city’s booming film industry, Beauty in Black Season 2 wrapped production earlier this year at Tyler Perry Studios, the 330-acre powerhouse on the former Fort McPherson site that Perry transformed into one of the nation’s largest production hubs.

Crews shut down Midtown streets like West Peachtree and Ponce de Leon for key scenes, capturing Atlanta’s electric energy—from sleek corporate offices to pulsating club scenes. It’s a love letter to our town, where Perry’s multi-year Netflix deal continues to pump jobs into the local economy and spotlight Black storytelling on a massive scale.

The All-Star Cast Bringing the Heat

Perry’s ensemble returns in full force, delivering the melodrama that fans crave. Leading the charge is breakout star Taylor Polidore Williams as Kimmie, whose raw vulnerability and fierce determination earned raves despite the show’s mixed critical reception (critics called it “haphazard” but audiences devoured it).

Crystle Stewart shines as the icy Mallory, whose marriage to Roy masks her ruthless ambition. Ricco Ross anchors the family as the cunning Horace, while Debbi Morgan chews scenery as the formidable Olivia. Rounding out the core: Julian Horton and Steven G. Norfleet as the entitled brothers Roy and Charles; Amber Reign Smith as Kimmie’s loyal friend Rain; Richard Lawson as the sly Uncle Norman; and supporting firecrackers like Terrell Carter (Varney), Charles Malik Whitfield (Jules), and Ursula O. Robinson (Delinda).

Perry, who wrote, directed, and executive-produced alongside Angi Bones and Tony Strickland, infuses the series with his trademark flair—over-the-top twists, emotional gut-punches, and unapologetic Black excellence.

“Kimmie steps into her power as the newest member of the Bellarie family,” he teased, promising a season where “nothing can stand in her way.”

What’s Next for the Bellarie Empire?

Part 1 streams now, with Part 2 slated for later (exact date TBD, but expect the same bingeable drop as before).

Early X buzz is electric: “Beauty in Black Season 2 is fire—go watch on Netflix!” one fan posted, while another hyped, “The wait is over… can’t wait!” As Atlanta’s own continues to conquer, Beauty in Black proves Perry’s formula—drama as addictive as sweet tea—still reigns supreme.

Fire up Netflix, ATL: The HBIC is calling the shots, and she’s not playing. Beauty in Black Season 2, Part 1 is available now on Netflix.

Looking For The Best Beignets In Atlanta? We’ve Got Them

    4 Min Read

Every month, three former co-workers in Atlanta come together to try desserts at certain metro Atlanta restaurants. One of their favorite menu items are beignets.

During this monthly ritual, which often takes the trio from Alpharetta to Stockbridge if they’re eager, their tastebuds attempt to harmonize. The Beignet Babes are keen to spot any servings not up to par: Is it a true beignet or just something dumped in powder?

Otherwise, it’s just a funnel cake. No, an award-winning beignet is fluffy, dumpling shaped and has a perky characteristic to it.

These three metro Atlanta ladies — all from south Louisiana — know when they’ve arrived at good-as-home Cajun cuisine.

Here Are The Best Beignets In Atlanta

These beignets they have in front of them are pretty good, but one of them says the sweetness is not there.
Perhaps the chef’s recipe calls for substituting the real sugar you would expect in the Nawlins delicacy.

So where can you have beignets in Atlanta and it’s metro area? Here are the leading restaurants:

A night out on the town more often than not begins in an Atlanta restaurant.

The city’s dining scene is a vibrant space with bold kitchens influenced by the best of worldly cultures interpreted by curious chefs.

Yet each restaurant has its signature dish, it’s edible business card, that leaves its mark on the tastebuds of hundreds of guests per week.

    Big Easy Grille

    1193 Collier Rd NW Suite D, Atlanta, GA 30318 | (404) 352-2777

Big Easy Grille has some of the best beignets in Atlanta.

Here’s what one reviewer says about Big Easy Grille: “This review is solely for one item, and that’s their beignets. A girlfriend had a birthday and was not able to make it to New Orleans to have the real deal. She told me about this place but said she never tried them. We decided to stop by and have drinks, and of course beignets. Heads up….do NOT bite my head off but these are BETTER than the ones in New Orleans. Don’t get me wrong…NOLA beignets are really good too, but these are lighter. NOLA’s has a denser texture. Also, the Big Easy’s are much smaller so that could be another contributing factor. Either way, we enjoyed them so much that we ordered another round. If you stop by…order you a batch … or TWO.”

    Louisiana Bistreaux

    1375 Virginia Ave, East Point, GA 30344 | (404) 762-6755

    3312 Piedmont Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30305 | (404) 941-9545

    1496 Church St, Decatur, GA 30030 |  (404) 963-1463

Louisiana Bistreaux has some of the best beignets in Atlanta.

Here’s what one reviewer says about Louisiana Bistreaux’s beignets: “This was my first time coming here with a group of my friends. The food was Awesome and so was the customer service. I had the Blackened Tilapia and the Red Velvet Cheesecake. Our waitress Courtney was so down to earth and so friendly. If I could have hired her to work at my store, I would. I love the atmosphere. Will definitely be back!”

    Yay Beignet & Bistro

    660 Irwin St NE Atlanta, Ga. 30312 | 470-289-1614

Here’s what one reviewer says about Yay Beignet: “Yay Beignet is such a vibe! They have perfected the recipe for fried catfish. The catfish and grits were the perfect combination of creamy and crispy. The biscuits are everything you need; flaky, moist, and a perfect companion for the fish. The beignet bites were amazing in both the chocolate sauce and the cinnamon sauce. Last but most important, the people were nice. • Meet New Falcons Kicker Parker Romo

    4 Min Read

The Atlanta Falcons have made a move to bolster their kicking game, signing former Minnesota Vikings kicker Parker Romo to their practice squad on Tuesday, Sept. 9, the team confirmed.

That means Romo faces his former squad, the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football.

The signing comes on the heels of a disappointing Week 1 performance by veteran kicker Younghoe Koo, who missed a crucial 44-yard field goal that could have forced overtime in the Falcons’ 23-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Raheem Morris had promised swift action following the loss, emphasizing the team’s commitment to a “highly competitive atmosphere.” True to his word, the Falcons held tryouts for several kickers on Tuesday morning, including Romo, Zane Gonzalez, Michael Badgley, and Ben Sauls.

Romo, a 28-year-old Peachtree City native, emerged as the choice to join the practice squad, bringing a local connection and a proven track record to the team.

    From XFL To NFL

Romo, the Atlanta Falcons’ new kicker, played in the XFL during its 2023 season. He was signed by the San Antonio Brahmas and appeared in all 10 of their games, converting 17 of 19 field goal attempts (89.5%) for 51 total points.

This performance led the league in field goal percentage, earned him a spot on the All-XFL Team, and included a then-record 57-yard field goal (later broken). Prior to his recent elevation to the Falcons’ active roster from their practice squad on September 13, 2025, Romo had limited NFL experience with teams like the Minnesota Vikings, but his XFL success helped build his professional profile as an undrafted free agent.

Romo, who played college football at Virginia Tech and Tulsa, appeared in four games for the Vikings in 2024, converting an impressive 11 of 12 field goal attempts, with his lone miss coming from the 40-49 yard range.

He also made 7 of 8 extra-point attempts and showed reliability on kickoffs. His longest career field goal, a 55-yarder, highlights his potential to compete at the NFL level.

The Falcons’ decision to sign Romo signals a direct challenge to Koo, a 2020 Pro Bowl kicker who has been a mainstay in Atlanta for seven seasons.

While Koo has historically been reliable, making 85.8% of his career field goal attempts, his performance dipped in 2024 with a career-low 73.5% success rate (25-of-34). Sunday’s miss against Tampa Bay, coupled with another attempt that banked off the upright but went through, has put Koo under scrutiny.

“I had a great offseason, great camp,” Koo told reporters Monday, expressing frustration over the miss. “I know I’m better than that, and on top of that, letting the guys down.”

Koo noted challenges with the Mercedes-Benz Stadium turf, saying his foot was hitting the ground, which required an adjustment he failed to execute properly.

To make room for Romo on the practice squad, the Falcons released edge rusher Ronnie Perkins, a former third-round pick who has been signed and released multiple times by the team.

Atlanta also has rookie kicker Lenny Krieg on the practice squad as part of the NFL’s international player pathway program, giving the team three kickers as they prepare for a primetime matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.

While Romo’s signing does not immediately displace Koo, it creates pressure for the veteran to rebound quickly.

Morris has made it clear that the team is exploring all options, both internally and externally, to ensure reliability at the position. With Romo’s prior experience with the Vikings, whom the Falcons face this weekend, and his strong performance last season, he could be a viable option if Koo’s struggles persist.

The Falcons (0-1) are looking to bounce back from their season-opening loss as they travel to Minnesota for a “Sunday Night Football” showdown.

    Final Word

Whether Koo retains his starting role or Romo gets a chance to step up, the kicking competition will be a storyline to watch as Atlanta aims to get back on track in Week 2.

  • New ADAC Design Studios in Atlanta Continues John Portman’s Legacy

    4 Min Read

In the heart of Buckhead, where creativity meets commerce, the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) stands as a beacon for interior designers, architects, and design enthusiasts across the Southeast.

Its recently redesigned interior spaces lean heavily into Atlanta’s place as a design hub.

”It’s huge,” Katie Miner, executive vice president and general manager of ADAC,” tells AtlantaFi.com, referring to Atlanta’s place in the design industry.

Miner and a handful of designers were on hand for the ribbon-cutting of ADAC’s new design spaces on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

“People are in the Southeast grew up with design,” Miner says. “The moms and their parents had designed homes. They hired interior designers. So we have more of an affection towards it. Like, we love design in the Southeast. So to have ADAC here in Atlanta is just, it’s huge for the design community, but not just Atlanta. It’s the entire Southeast region.”

It’s quite common to have designers “that will come in from Nashville and Charlotte and Charleston and other areas just to shop this building,” because of all of the product offerings that are here located in one space, she says.

For over six decades, this premier hub at 351 Peachtree Hills Avenue has been more than just a showroom destination—it’s a testament to the visionary spirit of one man: legendary Atlanta architect John C. Portman Jr.

Atlanta’s Design Mastermind: John Portman Jr.

As Atlanta continues to evolve as a global city of innovation and style, Portman’s legacy at ADAC reminds us how one architect’s bold ideas reshaped not only skylines but also the very fabric of local design culture.

Portman, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 93, was a Georgia Tech alumnus whose neofuturistic designs revolutionized urban architecture worldwide.

Born in Walhalla, South Carolina, in 1924, he graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1950 and quickly made Atlanta his canvas. His breakthrough came with the completion of ADAC in 1961, a project he personally designed as a multifaceted marketplace to cater to the burgeoning needs of the design trade.

“Going back to Mr. Portman, who designed this building, it was born from his love of design,” Miner says of ADAC’s design. “He was an architect by trade, but his wife really loved interior design, and so he started this building for the design trade back in 1961 because of that love for design, and then just it kept evolving over time and growing and growing as more and more, he was able to bring more and more product offerings here to Atlanta.”

This wasn’t just another building; it was Portman’s early foray into creating integrated spaces that blended functionality with aesthetic grandeur, setting the stage for his more famous atrium-filled masterpieces.

What made ADAC revolutionary in its time? Portman envisioned it as a “one-stop shopping resource” for residential and contract furnishings, drawing in showrooms from top brands and fostering a community for professionals.

Founded amid Atlanta’s post-World War II boom, the center was strategically located in Peachtree Hills to serve the city’s growing elite and business class.

It quickly became intertwined with Portman’s other ventures, such as the nearby AmericasMart—another of his 1961 designs—that solidified Atlanta as a powerhouse for trade shows and conventions.  Together, these projects helped transform Atlanta from a regional hub into an international destination, stimulating tourism and economic growth that still echoes today.

Portman’s significance to Atlanta cannot be overstated. He is credited with revitalizing downtown through the Peachtree Center complex, launched in 1965, which includes iconic structures like the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (with its pioneering 23-story atrium), the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, and the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Newly Designed ADAC Studios Shine in Buckhead

These “cities within a city” concepts—massive, inwardly focused developments with soaring interiors—challenged traditional urban planning and made Atlanta’s skyline a symbol of modernist ambition.

Critics once dismissed his work as turning backs on the streets, but proponents hail it for humanizing vast spaces and enhancing daily life through “cinematic” environments that connect people to architecture on a personal level.

By the 1970s, Portman’s influence extended globally, with projects like the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles and the Renaissance Center in Detroit, but Atlanta remained his true north star.

Miner says look for ADAC to do big things in the future.

“ADAC is the largest design center in the Southeast — actually in the country, that serves the Southeast,” she says.

Of course, Tyler Perry Studios jobs won’t just come from filling out an application.

Here’s what Essence Wallace, who worked at Tyler Perry Studios, says about getting a job with the movie mogul.

As far as the process for being hired at TPS — or any job in film and television production for that matter — it’s all about WHO you know. Networking isn’t my strength, per se — BUT I learned to master the art of building relationships. One great relationship will KEEP you working in this industry. It starts by getting out and surrounding yourself with people that are working — like being willing to work for free on independent projects and going to workshops or seminars to develop your craft.

As far as Perry is concerned, he puts a lot of importance on make hiring decisions that reflect the community, especially given the lack of representation in the movie business.

This is what he told CBS News:

“I know for a fact that when I drive in through these gates, onto this 330 acres and see these 12 sound stages, and see the highway sign that says ‘Tyler Perry Studios’ as you’re making to the exit in here, as I come in here and I see these hundreds of people working, these black and brown – I’ve been on sets where I’ve been the only black face on, only black face, as recently as 2019 going, ‘Where are the black people in this movie?’ Back behind the camera? So, when I come to work here and every black person that comes to work here they go, ‘Oh my God, it’s heaven. Here we are. We’re represented.’ Where everybody’s represented. LGBTQ’s represented. Black, white, gay, straight, whatever. We’re all represented, working hand-in-hand, arm-in-arm.

Tyler Perry also gives job opportunities to students. Here’s how to get an internship with Tyler Perry Studios.

Wallace, who is now with The Chosen Productions, says the key to getting hired to work on a Tyler Perry Studios production is to immerse yourself in the Atlanta film community, particularly the Tyler Perry Studios environment.

“I’ve rarely seen anyone get hired from submitting a resume online and having a formal interview – not that it doesn’t ever happen. It’s just simply not the norm for someone pursuing a career in film and TV,” she says.

“You have to set your goals, decide the types of projects you want to work on, and then find opportunities to engage with other like minded individuals,” she tells AtlantaFi.com. “I know this is not the answer most people are looking for, but I’ve helped more people get jobs just by helping them connect with the right person vs. focusing on their education and background.”

By the way, Wallace says The Chosen Productions is also accepting resumes for all positions at thechosenproductions2014@gmail.com for upcoming television shows, films, and documentaries.

With more than 700 movie and TV projects just in the last few years, the film industry has generated more than $9 billion for the state of Georgia.
