  • The Txlips: Atlanta Black Woman Rock Band Are 'Queens Of The New Age'

The Txlips: Atlanta Black Woman Rock Band Are ‘Queens Of The New Age’

    3 Min Read

Just as metal, just as hard and just as cool as those other guys, The Txlips are an all-black woman rock band based in Atlanta.

AtlantaFi recently sat down with them at Atlanta’s AfroPunk, which happened in mid-October.

The Txlips just released their debut album “Queens of the New Age,” which is available on Amazon and iTunes as well as various music outlets.

The Txlips were born when the group’s lead guitar player and vocalist “Guitar Gabby” helmed the background band for Atlanta rapper Diamond.

“The Txlips are a rock-and-roll black female band based out of Atlanta, but we are all from different parts of the United States,” Gabby said.

MoDrumma, the group’s drummer, said the band actually started off with her and Gabby. “Me and Gabby have been friends with years. We’ve crossed paths musically for years and one night she called me and said, ‘Hey, I’ve been asked to work on a music video for Diamond from Crime Mob. She was like, ‘Do you want to be a part of i?’, and I was like, “Sure, why not?”

MoDrumma said that’s when the idea of a music group arose.

“So we went there, there were a lot of other musicians there and at that point, Gabby was like, ‘You know what, there are some bad females that can play some dope instruments. Why not make our own stuff together? So since then, we’ve been road dogs and that’s where the Txlips were born.”

Gabby said the group is a united entity, but like Voltron, they are individuals artists as well. “We are all different, with individuals backgrounds, and styles that come together to show how diverse black women really are.”

Dara Carter, a keyboardist and singer for the group, said she learned diverse musical styles from her father. “My dad was a major influence [musically], he listened to a lot of diverse music so I got to hear a lot of bands that most people haven’t heard of. I pulled a lot of my sound from bands a lot of people haven’t heard of.”

The Txlips are currently on their “Queens of the New Age” tour in support of their album. Next year, they’re slated to perform in South Africa. Look for them in a city near you.

  • Atlanta Public Schools To Offer Middle School Girls Flag Football In 2019

Atlanta Public Schools To Offer Middle School Girls Flag Football In 2019

    2 Min Read

In what is believed to be a first for Georgia, Atlanta Public Schools is going to let girls play flag football in middle school. The girls’ sport will commence in 2019, APS said.

The move would make APS a pioneer in girls’ football, as only a handful of school districts around the nation offer the sport. All 13 of the school district’s middle schools will have a team next fall, APS said in a news release.

Atlanta Public Schools is excited to partner with USA Football, ESPN and the Atlanta Falcons to be one of the first school districts in the country to provide another outstanding athletic opportunity through flag football for our middle school girls,” said APS Superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen said in a written statement. “I can’t wait to have my first workout with one of our teams!”

Atlanta Public Schools’ forward thinking will foster increased participation opportunities and positive experiences for a new group of student-athletes, setting a great example for school districts nationwide,” said USA Football CEO Scott Hallenbeck.

APS has the support of local and national sports luminaries in offering girls flag football.

“The Falcons have long appreciated the fan support of girls across our region – now it’s our turn to root for them,” said Vice President, Community Relations, AMBSE Chris Millman was quoted as saying. “We’re happy to support Atlanta Public Schools as the district builds its middle school girls flag program. This continues an exciting trend of girls flag across the greater Atlantaarea and we’re proud to ensure these programs have the budget assistance they need for the good of their student-athletes.”

Want to learn more about the Beltline and its history concerning African-Americans? The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership (ABP) is  inviting the public to attend the next free ABP Speaker Series event at the Atlanta BeltLine Center.

On Wednesday, October 24, 6-8 pm, Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, CEO of Preserve Black Atlanta, a non-profit dedicated to identifying, recording, and preserving African-American history and culture, will speak on “Developing Partnerships in the Quest for Freedom.”

In her talk, Dr. Sims-Alvarado will delve into how Atlanta came to be the epicenter of the modern civil rights movement, how Atlantans of multiple races came together in the quest for freedom, and how knowledge and arts accessibility can be democratized through the “open museum.”

After the talk, Dr. Sims-Alvarado will sign copies of her book, “Atlanta and the Civil Rights Movement: 1944-1968.” Copies of the book will be available for sale at the Center for $22.

  • Flashback: Larry Bird Scores 60 Points Against The Atlanta Hawks

VIDEO: Larry Bird Scores 60 Points Against The Atlanta Hawks

    2 Min Read

More than 30 years ago, Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird scorched and torched the Atlanta Hawks, scoring a season-high 60 points. Larry Legend started off hot and got unconscious in the late third and fourth quarters.

The Celtics won the game, which was played when Hawks icon Dominique Wilkins was a young player finding his identity in the hard-scrabble NBA. Take look at the shot selection, scoring plays and oohs and aahs from the crowd.

That time Larry Bird scored 60 against the Atlanta Hawks (VIDEO)

It’s a cliche, but this is “one of the greatest performances ever.

Bird was already an NBA superstar at the time. The French Lick, Indiana native was the fuel that powered the mighty Celtics in the league’s hey day. Bird was always a great all-around player, but this display against the Hawks is when he made it look easy.

Glad we don’t have to relive those days in ATL. Besides, ATL’s Dominique Wilkins later went toe to toe with Bird and the Celtics in a number of memorable battles at the Omni as well as in Boston Garden.

Now we have super rookies like Trae Young to swish threes on opposing players. Y’all ready for the 2018-19 Atlanta Hawks?
