It’s Official: Atlanta Will Host NBA All-Star Game

    3 Min Read

It’s official: Atlanta, Georgia, will be the host city of the NBA All Star game on March 7, 2021. The NBA players union agreed to the date, making it a reality.

The event will be Atlanta’s first major sports event since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

More than a week ago, senior NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, tweeted that the NBA and The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) were in talks to still have an All-Star game.

When Will The 2021 NBA All-Star Game Be?

The players and the league had to get on the same page regarding a date and city that was mutually acceptable to both parties. As a result, they settled on the NBA All-Star game date of Sunday, March 7, 2021 in downtown Atlanta’s Philips Arena.

Back when it was still just an idea, NBA insiders opined that a city that was also a strong TV broadcasting mecca made sense.

One site under discussion is Atlanta, home of Turner Sports. That idea includes providing support for HBCU’s and COVID-19 relief,” Wojnarowski tweeted.

The overall plan would incorporate several other pieces to support other Atlanta institutions that are suffering due to COVID-19.

“That idea includes providing support for HBCU’s and COVID-19 relief,” Woj said. Although other cities are thought to be in consideration, the longtime sports journalist only alluded to Georgia’s largest city.

Atlanta, home of the league’s Hawks, has suffered like most sports cities as fan attendance has dramatically fallen and some venues have been repurposed to deal with hospital overflow.

Any All Star game held in Atlanta would have to adhere to strict COVID protocols. One advantage the city has is that it is the home of Turner Sports, which has the primary TV contract with the league.

The NBA originally announced that there would postpone the All Star game for 2021:

“Public health conditions prevented the Pacers, the NBA All-Star Host Committee and the NBA from appropriately planning and executing fan-focused All-Star activities in Indianapolis that were envisioned for this February,” a league statement on Nov. 25 read, while announcing that Indianapolis would instead host the 2024 All-Star Game.

Then there are the logistical concerns posed by having such a large sporting event in the city, although Atlanta successfully hosted the SEC Championship a few months earlier.

When Is The Last Time Atlanta Hosted The NBA All-Star Game?

Only two times in the past 40+ years has the NBA All-Star Game been played in Atlanta. The first occurrence came in 1978 at The Omni coliseum. Years later, the game returned in 2003 at Philips Arena.

If the big game does return to the city, it would be held at State Farm Arena, which has been used a polling precinct most recently.

Back in 2003, the NBA’s biggest stars (Kobe, Lebron, Allen Iverson, etc.) converged on downtown Atlanta to have one of the largest and most congested events the city has ever had.

Here is some footage of the NBA All-Star game held in Atlanta in 2003:

Atlanta Lookback: The Slave Auction House On Whitehall Street

    2 Min Read

“War is hell.” That familiar phrase was reportedly first uttered by Union General Tecumseh Sherman during the Civil War. Sherman commanded more than 100,000 troops as destroyed the American South town by town in the infamous “March to the Sea.”

Did You Know About The Slave Auction House In Atlanta?

One of the cities in his wake was Atlanta, then a teetering rail town. There are photographs that exist of much of the carnage, thanks to official Union photographer George N. Barnard, who was embedded with the soldiers.

In 1866, Barnard published one of the most important war photography projects of all time, “Photographic Views of Sherman’s Campaign.”

Much of  Atlanta’s landscape was part of Sherman’s activities. As Georgia Tech’s historical account observes, “In anticipation of advancing Union troops in the summer of 1864, several forts were built on what is now Georgia Tech land. Seen as strategically high ground, land along the southern edge of campus was cleared and fortified by the Confederacy to prevent direct frontal attacks on the city.”

One of the more iconic pictures taken during Sherman’s invasion of Atlanta shows a structure on Whitehall Street used to hold slave auctions all but abandoned. Whitehall Street today is in the middle of a den of old, abandoned buildings, open and wild fields and liquor stores.

5 Inspiring Quotes From Hank Aaron

    4 Min Read

Henry “Hank” Aaron was a tender soul away from the baseball diamond. But on the field, he was an incomparable lion that instilled fear in opposing pitchers.

Aaron passed away on January 22, 2021 in Atlanta. He was 86. While Aaron’s legacy is secure, we are left with his indelible record in Major League Baseball as well as many words of wisdom he shared along the way.

5 Inspiring Quotes From Hank Aaron

Let’s take a look at some of the wise words Aaron left with us as a testament to a life well lived and graciously played.

While we remember these endearing words, let’s also recall the principles that Aaron lived by, including honor, respect and integrity.

    1. Live Up To Your Friends’ Expectations

Aaron once replied to a letter from a fan way back from his Milwaukee Braves days. Author Sandy Tolan relates:

“It is very heart warming to know that you are in my corner. I will always be grateful for the interest you have shown in me. As the so called count down’ begins, please be assured I will try to live up to the expectations of my friends.”

    2. Has Major League Baseball Been Fair?

Here’s Aaron in a heated conversation with Monte Irvin about whether MLB has been fair to African-American players.

“I don’t care if anybody believes me or not, as long as a breath is in my body, someone has to show me they’re going after a Black manager, they can have Black people working in the front office, they can have a Black trainer, I’ll say then that baseball has been fair to Blacks.”

    3. Growing Up With The KKK

“I remember many times as a little boy growing up that the Ku Klux Klan would come marching down the street, for no reason at all,” Aaron said in a 2010 MLB Network interview. “My mother would tell me, ‘Son, go hide under the bed.’

    4. The Importance Of Patience In Your Pursuits

While Aaron was pursuing the homerun record, he shared with the Greensboro News & Record some choice thoughts on coaching legend Dean Smith.

When I was going after the record, the questions were always coming at me. ‘When are you going to break it?’ ‘Are you going to break it next week?’ ‘Will you break it tonight?’

“How would I know? You just have to try to be patient. I kept answering that I didn’t know, if not tonight, then tomorrow night, or next week, or next season.

    5. On American Racism

Aaron was a beloved figure for most of America, but the constant racist threats, especially as he narrowed Babe Ruth’s homerun lead in the 1970s, left a bitter taste in his mouth. Here’s what he said about that, according to ESPN.

“If I was white, all America would be proud of me,” Aaron said almost a year before he passed Ruth. “But I am Black.”

The city of Atlanta as well as the state continue to express condolences for the loss of “Hammerin’ Hank.”

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in a written statement. “This is a considerable loss for the entire city of Atlanta. While the world knew him as ‘Hammering Hank Aaron’ because of his incredible, record-setting baseball career, he was a cornerstone of our village, graciously and freely joining Mrs. Aaron in giving their presence and resources toward making our city a better place. As an adopted son of Atlanta, Mr. Aaron was part of the fabric that helped place Atlanta on the world stage. Our gratitude, thoughts and prayers are with the Aaron family.”

  • Baseball legend Henry Hank Aaron dies at age 86.

Hank Aaron To Be Laid To Rest In Private Funeral

    4 Min Read

Baseball legend Hank Aaron passed away the morning of Thursday, January 22, 2021. He was 86 years old.

A private funeral will be held at Friendship Baptist Church Wednesday at 1 p.m. Local TV stations will stream the memorial service.

Aaron, one of the most iconic players in Major League Baseball history, started his career in the Negro Leagues before making his Major League team, the Milwaukee Braves.

Hank Aaron, Baseball Legend, Dead At 86

The 23-year-old was a force of nature. Shy and reserved from a small town, Aaron didn’t give interviews in the early years of his career.

In 1958, he took the Braves one game short of a championship. By that time, Aaron’s confidence was brimming.

“I felt extremely proud that I knew all the pitches like the back of my hand, and so I thought any time that I wanted to when I walked up to the plate that I could hit the ball as hard as I wanted to or could hit it out of the ballpark,” he once said.

Playing for nearly two decades, Aaron would rewrite the history books to become one of the most prolific hitters of all time.

The night he broke the homerun record in Atlanta-Fulton Stadium — smashing his 715th — remains one of the most electric feats in all of sports.

His record as the homerun king continues to stand in the MLB pantheon. His offensive prowess is unparalleled. Aaron holds many offensive records. He is one of only two players to hit 30 or more home runs in a season at least 15 times.

Despite Success, Hank Aaron Suffered Years Of Abuse

Born in Mobile, Alabama, Aaron always engendered himself to regular folks and never hobnobbed with the elite.

But despite his success, Aaron said he spent years suffering racially motivated death threats and ridicule from opposing fans and people intent at hating him.

Aaron said the years of abuse took a toll on him.

“I never thought that playing baseball would bring out so many negative and bigoted thoughts in people’s minds. I thought that they would be behind me 100%, but that was not the case,” he said.

Even on the fateful night he broke Babe Ruth’s homerun record, indicative of the racial climate at the time, his bodyguards had instructed the ushers to turn to face the crowd rather than the field during his record-breaking feat.

He spent his latter years as a vice president of the Atlanta Braves, his hometown team.

Funeral arrangements have been confirmed. He was to be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 in a humble Baptist church.

Around Atlanta, the state and baseball world, condolences poured in for Aaron, a true son of the South.

“This is a considerable loss for the entire city of Atlanta,” Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in a statement. “While the world knew him as ‘Hammering Hank Aaron’ because of his incredible, record-setting baseball career, he was a cornerstone of our village, graciously and freely joining Mrs. Aaron in giving their presence and resources toward making our city a better place. As an adopted son of Atlanta, Mr. Aaron was part of the fabric that helped place Atlanta on the world stage. Our gratitude, thoughts and prayers are with the Aaron family.”

The Atlanta Braves also released a statement, commenting on the gentle nature that Aaron always displayed.

“We are absolutely devastated by the passing of our beloved Hank,” Braves Chairman Terry McGuirk said. “He was a beacon for our organization first as a player, then with player development, and always with our community efforts. His incredible talent and resolve helped him achieve the highest accomplishments, yet he never lost his humble nature. Henry Louis Aaron wasn’t just our icon, but one across Major League Baseball and around the world. His success on the diamond was matched only by his business accomplishments off the field and capped by his extraordinary philanthropic efforts.

How To Build An Emergency Food Supply

    4 Min Read

We are living in perilous times as food prices continue to peak and shortages on key items becomes a concern. That’s why you need an emergency food supply list.

In this article, we’ll share how you can save money by building an emergency food supply list to keep your cupboards have being bare. Keep in mind that you’ll want to keep an eye on expiration dates on perishable goods.

What To Buy For Your Emergency Food Supply

Because none of us knows what the future holds, we should always be prepared for an emergency. The key is to store food that can be cooked and items that can be eaten without being cooked.

Remember to properly store items based on the temperatures they need. Bacteria can spoil food quickly if stored at the wrong at temperatures.

Ready to go over some things you need for your emergency food supply? Let’s get started.

    1. Buy Water

You should stock up on bottled water if you can. H2o is the most nutritious thing you can put inside your body. Whatever you favorite brand of water is, you should be able to find it at your local grocery store.

If buying bottled water is not an affordable option for you, consider storing water in your own containers.

    Some bottled water options are:

    2. Store At Least For 3-Days Supply

The federal government recommends that you stock at least a three-day supply of perishable goods for any disaster or emergency.

You may choose to extend that to a week’s worth, if you have the space. But don’t buy items that you will just end up hiding from yourself. If you do that, much of your food will go bad.

So, what are some items you should buy? Here’s a partial list:

    • Dry Cereal O Granola
    • Dried Fruit
    • Canned juices
    • Ready-To-Eat Canned Meats and Vegetables
    • Peanut Butter
    • Non-Perishable Pasteurized Milk

Here’s a FREE printable pantry list you can use.

    3. Buy Foods Your Family Loves

When it comes to stocking up a food pantry or storing emergency food supplies, one of the main ways to waste money is to buy things you and your family don’t even like to eat.

If you have children, ask them what they like to eat so you’ll know what to store.

Also, make sure you account for snacks, drinks and the main foods that make up a normal diet.

    4. Buy Groceries In Bulk

You’ll also want to buy groceries in bulk quantities. Not only does it save money, but it ensures that you have a plentiful supply of the things you like.

Want more tips on bulk-buying? See how to save on groceries.

    5. Be Mindful Of Any Dietary Restrictions

It will do you no good to stock up on items that hurt your stomach or that you can’t have. Keep in mind what your dietary limits are.

If you can’t have a lot of sweets, it may not be a good idea to go all in on cereal or sodas.

    Last Words

Making your own emergency food supply is simple if you take the time to plan. In case you lose electricity, make sure you have food items that don’t need to be cooked or heated.

Above all, you need to stay safe with the foods you choose to eat. That means you may have to throw away perishable food such as meat, poultry, or any leftovers that have sat out and are over 40 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours or more.
