Delta Air Lines Flight Turns Around Shortly After Takeoff Due To Hitting Bird

Delta flight 2654, operated by an Airbus A321, was carrying 187 passengers when the impact occurred on the departure from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The crew turned the aircraft around and landed back in Atlanta without further incident, according to Delta.

The airline apologized to customers for the disruption to their travel plans and moved all 187 passengers onto a replacement aircraft to complete the trip to Minneapolis–Saint Paul.

Delta has not said whether the A321 sustained any damage from the strike. It is also unclear how long passengers waited before departing on the second aircraft.

The account is based on a statement from Delta. The airline did not release further details on the altitude of the strike, which engine or part of the airframe was hit, or whether any passengers or crew were injured. No injuries have been reported in available accounts of the return.
