Food & Drink / Things To Do3 Min Read
In a flavorful move that’s already sparking smiles across the Peach State, State Representative Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) has introduced House Bill 1013, a bipartisan proposal to officially designate lemon pepper as Georgia’s state chicken wing flavor.
The legislation highlights the deep cultural roots and widespread popularity of lemon pepper wings, particularly in Atlanta and throughout Georgia.
Bill Would Designate Lemon Pepper’s Georgia’s Chicken Wing Flavor
Rep. Bell describes the bill as lighthearted yet meaningful, emphasizing how this beloved flavor unites communities.
“Lemon pepper wings have become a staple of southern cuisine in Atlanta and across Georgia,” Rep. Bell said in a statement. “This is a lighthearted bill, but it carries real meaning. Lemon pepper wings are a fan-favorite that bring people together across race, culture, class and community.
From “Lemon Pepper Lou” at Magic City to lyrics in billboard hits from Gucci Mane and Rick Ross, lemon pepper wings have been central to many of the moments and individuals who have shaped this city and state.
Just like the peach represents our agricultural roots, lemon pepper wings represent Georgia’s cultural flavor and global influence.”
The bill, formally titled to amend state symbols law by adding lemon pepper as the official Georgia state chicken wing flavor, includes legislative findings that recognize the dish’s evolution in Georgia since chicken wings gained popularity here in the 1980s.
It points to lemon pepper’s unique place in local cuisine, music, sports culture, and beyond.
HB 1013 carries strong bipartisan support. Rep. Bell is the primary sponsor, with co-sponsors including:
- Rep. Dexter Sharper (D-Valdosta)
- Rep. Kasey Carpenter (R-Dalton)
- Rep. David Huddleston (R-Roopville)
- Rep. Mekyah McQueen (D-Smyrna)
If passed, the measure would add lemon pepper to Georgia’s roster of official state symbols—joining icons like the peach, the live oak, and the brown thrasher—while celebrating the state’s vibrant food scene and its influence far beyond state lines.
The bill arrives amid the 2026 legislative session, where lawmakers are addressing a mix of serious policy issues alongside these more whimsical proposals.

Atlanta loves some hot wings, lemon pepper is always in the conversation.
