Mercedes-Benz Stadium may be the venue for one of the biggest games in the NFL playoffs. Here are the details announced by the NFL owners on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023.If either the Kansas City Chiefs or Buffalo Bills don’t make it to the AFC Championship, the game will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta, Georgia.
AFC Championship Game Could Be Played in Atlanta If…
Here are the scenarios in which the AFC title game would be played in Atlanta, a neutral site this year:
- Buffalo (12-3) and Kansas City (13-3) both win or tie in Week 18 + both teams advance to the AFC title game.
- Buffalo (12-3) and Kansas City (13-3) both lose + Cincinnati (11-4) also loses or ties in Week 18 + Buffalo and Kansas City advance to the AFC title game.
- Buffalo (12-3) and Kansas City (13-3) both lose + Cincinnati (11-4) wins + the AFC title game is either Bills-Chiefs or Bengals-Chiefs.
When is The 2023 AFC Championship Game Being Played?
The AFC Championship game is set for Sunday, January 29, 2023, in either Buffalo, Kansas City or Atlanta.
The need for a neutral site arose after the Cincinnati Bengals vs. Buffalo game was canceled following the on-field collapse of Damar Hamblin.
In a news release, the NFL said, “If the Ravens (10-6) defeat Cincinnati in Week 18 and the Chargers (10-6) beat the Denver Broncos, and if Baltimore and Cincinnati are scheduled to play a wild-card game against one another, the site for that game would be determined by a coin toss. If Cincinnati wins the Week 18 game or if Baltimore and Cincinnati are not scheduled to play one another in the wild-card round, the game sites would be determined by the regular scheduling procedures.”
“We believe this is a focused approach that will only affect four teams, and directly address the potential for competitive inequity resulting from 30 teams playing 17 games and two playing 16 games,” Goodell said during a Friday conference call. “It was critical for the owners to vote today so that clubs know going into this weekend what they’re playing for.”
Final Words
The NFL playoffs begin this weekend with the wildcard round.

The Georgia Bulldogs won their second consecutive college football national championship on Monday, Jan. 9, 2023 with a convincing victory over the TCU Horned Frogs.
2 In A Row: Georgia Wins College Football Championship
Less than a month earlier, the Georgia Bulldogs dominated the LSU Tigers 50-30 in a battle of heavyweights Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022, in the SEC Championship Game in downtown Atlanta, Georgia.
The game secured Georgia as the SEC Champion and locked in their #1 seed in the College Football Playoff. Scroll to the bottom to watch the highlights.
Next up: The Georgia Bulldogs (13-0 SEC) will face the Ohio State Buckeyes (11-1, Big Ten) in the Peach Bowl at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
It looks like the Dawgs are headed for a showdown with LSU at the end of the 2022 football season. Coming on the heels of the university’s first national championship in nearly 40 years, the Bulldogs have a lot to play for.
Take a look at the Georgia football 2022 schedule and see if there are any “gotcha” games that may be under the radar. The Kentucky game? Probably. The Oregon opener? Definitely. But Head Coach Kirby Smart is SEC-ready now, perhaps more than he ever has been.
Running the table last year has taught the Bulldogs how to win it all, and they’re poised to prove the doubters wrong.

The Georgia Bulldogs ended a uprecendented two-year run with a convincing win over the TCU Horned Frogs 65-7 to win their second consecutive College Football National Championship. The game on Monday, Jan. 9, 2022, in Los Angeles’ Sofi Stadium was a fitting conclusion for the Dawgs, who field a team full of NFL-caliber players.
The Dawgs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, putting up 38 points in the first half over the outmanned Horned Frogs. TCU quarterback Max Duggan never found his footing as he found himself on the ground several times as the Georgia defense repeatedly caved in on him.
Georgia Wins Second Straight College Football Title
Georgia scored 42 straight points after TCU cut their early lead to 3 points,10-7.
Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart said the game plan was just to take it to TCU.
“A really aggressive plan. Not holding back anything,” he said after the contest. “We wanted our kids to play without fear, and all year, I told them, ‘We ain’t getting hunted, guys. We’re doing the hunting. And hunting season is almost over. We only got one more chance to hunt.’ And we hunted tonight.”
UGA quarterback Stetson Bennett threw for six touchdowns, tying a college football championship record held by former LSU signal caller Joe Burrow.
The senior signal caller said it was a cool moment when he was given a curtain call ovation from adoring fans and the Georgia sideline.
“I told all the guys, ‘What are we doing? Why don’t we have a play?'” Bennett said. “I was, like, they’re letting me walk out of here.”
“Stetson speaks for himself, the way he leads and prepares,” Smart told reporters. “His mental makeup is such of a quarterback that believes he can make every throw, and what he did tonight was truly amazing. Probably had his best game of his career, in my opinion, with some of the checks he made, some of the decisions he made, just really elite.”
Bennett, who started his Georgia career unsure of his place, finishes the season as a Heisman finalist and an intriguing NFL prospect.
Georgia began the season with the daunting task of running through the always-tough SEC, including a resurgent Tennessee team and inspired play from other SEC East teams. Here’s how the season played out.
Did Smart think the 2022 squad could repeat as champions?
“I’m kind of thinking, ‘Well, that would be nice, but we lost 15 draft picks,'” Smart told media after the game. “Might not be that easy this time.” But Bennett believed Georgia would be good enough again. “He had full conviction that he wanted to come back and go opposite of the mainstream,” Smart said. “He said, ‘I want to go play. I want to go play football and prove to people this is no fluke. We can do this.’ And he did everything that he said he was going to do.”

A controversial call ended the Falcons’ hopes of a fourth-quarter comeback as they fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 21, 15 in Tampa.

In their most balanced attack of the season, the Atlanta Falcons won 28-14 over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2022. The win improved Atlanta’s record to 3-2.
Week 7: Falcons 17, Bengals 35
The Atlanta Falcons dropped another game last week, this time to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2022. The win dropped Atlanta’s record to 3-4. Next up are the Carolina Panthers in what seems like a must-win for the Falcons.
Here are the highlights from the Bengals game.
Week 8: Falcons 37, Panthers 34
The Falcons made the most of their return to Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2022. Against the Carolina Panthers, the Birds showed grit and a propensity to overcome adversity late in the game. The 37-34 victory put the Falcons in sole possession of first place in the NFC South.
Atlanta couldn’t put up a fight on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022 in Charlotte. The Falcons fell 25-15 to the Panthers as Atlanta’s offense could never get on track.
Week 9: Falcons 17, Chargers 20
Against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Atlanta Falcons found new and excruciating ways to lose on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2022 at Mercedes Benz Stadium. The Falcons jumped out to a double-digit lead early on but couldn’t hold on against the Chargers, falling 20-17.
Week 10: Falcons 15, Carolina 25
The Panthers and Falcons meet again on Thursday Night Football in a sloppy game filled with miscues and what-might-have beens. The Falcons lost the Nov 10, 2022 game 25 to 15 to the Panthers.
Week 11: Falcons 27, Bears 24
The Falcons beat the Bears 27-24 by sending pressure to Chicago’s Justin Fields and doing just enough on offense. The win moved the Falcons to second place in the NFC South, just behind Tampa Bay.
Week 12: Commanders 19, Falcons 13
The Falcons offense couldn’t get over the hump on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022 against the Commanders.
Largely playing a bend but don’t break defense, the Falcons kept themselves in the game until the final minute, where Mariota thre it away with a pick.
Week 13: Steelers 19, Falcons 13
The Falcons came into the game on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022 needing a win to stay within a game of NFC South-leading Tampa Bay, but it did’n’t go that way.
Mariota drove Atlanta (5-8) to the Steelers’ 10 yard line with another chance to pull out a victory, but they had to settle for a field goal. They didn’t get the ball back until 20 some seconds on the clock. Mariota’s last pass was then picked off and the Steelers ran the clock out.
Week 14: Saints 21, Falcons 18
Desmond Ridder’s debut against the Saints on Dec. 18, 2022 was a winnable game once again for the Falcons. He threw for 97 yards on 13 of 26 attempts and head coach Arthur Smith said that no matter what his yardage was that “whether he threw for 400 yards or he threw for 100 it wasn’t going to define his career.”
But still the Falcons had a chance to win the game or send it to overtime when Ridder hit fellow rookie wideout Drake London in Saints territory just before the two minute warning. But alas, London fumbled when a Saints defender hit him and New Orleans recovered, sealing the 21-18 defeat for the Dirty Birds.
Week 15: Ravens 17, Falcons 9
On Christmas Eve, Desmond Ridder started his second straight game, this time against the Ravens. The Falcons stuck around for most of the game, but couldn’t make enough plays to win the game, losing 17-9 to Baltimore.
The loss eliminated the Falcons from the postseason.
Who Are The Team Captains For The Falcons?
For the 2022 season, the team captains for the Falcons are quarterback Marcus Mariota, tackle Jake Matthews, defensive lineman Grady Jarrett, cornerback A.J. Terrell and kicker Younghoe Koo.
Final Word
After missing the playoffs last year, the Falcons are poised to make a comeback with new signal caller Marcus Mariota. Showing how aggressive the Birds plan to be from a personnel standpoint, the Falcons recently acquired wide receiver Bryan Edwards from the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2023 draft.

At Saturday’s Cricket Celebration Bowl in Atlanta, North Carolina Central ruined outgoing Coach Deion Sanders’ last game for the Jackson State Tigers with an exciting win in a contest that went back and forth.
NCC beat JSU 41-34 in overtime before more than 50,000 fans in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Jackson State reached the one-year-line but a pass by All-SWAC quarterback Shedeur Sanders sailed out of bounds.
NCC Quarterback Davius Richard threw for 177 yards and ran for 97 more and two touchdowns, shutting the door on Jackson State’s undefeated season.
Cricket Celebration Bowl 2022 Score: NCC 41, Jackson State 34
After the game, Coach Deion Sanders told reporters in the post-game interview, he said that any insinuation that he was leaving Jackson State to boast his income was false.
“I don’t coach for legacy. I coach for kids. I coach for the love and passion. To fathom that I would do anything for money just blows my mind,” Sanders said in the postgame interview.
He also expressed admiration for the student-athletes he coach this year.
“I feel like we’ve won, but we didn’t win that game,” said Sanders. “I miss these guys already. I love them.”
The Cricket Celebration Bowl featured the conference winners from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
North Carolina Central last played in the Celebration Bowl in 2016, losing to Grambling State of the SWAC. NCC has however won two Black College Division II national titles in the mid-2000s.
Jackson State on the other hand, played in the Celebration Bowl last year after coming in with an 11-1 record. JSU lost 31-10 to South Carolina State.
The souring ending marked the conclusion of the Prime Time experience for Jackson State, a historically black university in Mississippi. Sanders now goes the Colorado Buffaloes.
Coach Deion Sanders On Why He Decided To leave Jackson State

Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young recently got into it with a sports reporter during an interview due to his absence from the team bench lately.
The encounter comes amid a rough patch for the Hawks after they’ve not been able to close out some recent games, although they were able to beat the Denver Nuggets.
Trae Young And Reporter Get Into it (Video)
Another development that has people talking is a reported incident in which Hawks head coach Nate McMillan told Young to either come off the bench or not play at all.
Young has been nursing a shoulder injury and looked like he was determined to play against the Nuggets. McMillan shot it down, saying that he wanted Young to come off the bench or not to show up. Young chose not to show up at all.
After the media got wind of the story, Young finds himself just trying to put the incident behind him. “I’m just here to play basketball and win a championship and try to do my best,” he told reporters.
Young took umbrage with a reporter questioning his leadership.
See the exchange in this video:
Final Word
The Hawks are in the thick of the Eastern Conference race, but will need a healthy Young to do the job. Looks like they’re also determined to dump John Collins for a final missing piece to a championship run.

Jackson (MEAC MVP) who totaled six total tackles (one for loss), a blocked punt and a recovery. While
the MEAC representative from Washington, DC were able to force three turnovers, they were not able
to capitalize on any of those Hornets mistakes with points, which proved to be the difference in the
