Everybody knows that acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee is a product of Atlanta’s Morehouse College, the largest all-male African-American university in the nation. But who is the man and why is he of such importance to Atlanta and the film community?
Who Is Spike Lee?
Spike Lee is a legendary filmmaker, producer and screenwriter who has used his camera lens to highlight institutional racism, expose hypocrisy and celebrate the African-American experience.
Lee has also paved the way for other filmmakers of color to make films in America.
Where Was Spike Lee Born And Raised?
Lee has proudly said that he was born “Shelton Jackson Lee on March 20th in Grady Hospital” in 1957.
His father, Bill Lee, was an accomplished jazz musician who moved the family to New York shortly after Lee’s birth.
While he proudly reps Brooklyn’s Bed-Sty neighborhood, where he’s lived for most of his life, Lee was born in 1957 in the ATL. He told the New York Times, his family moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was a child (Lee was the oldest sibling of six). His family integrated an Italian-American enclave called Cobble Hill. “We got called nigger this and nigger that,” he told the Times.
At Morehouse, Lee was drawn to the big screen, taking film classes at Clark Atlant University. There he made his first film, Last Hustle in Brooklyn.
Once he graduated, he enrolled at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, earning a masters in film and TV. Lee quickly rose to fame with the 1985 release of “She’s Gotta Have it,” and then “Do the Right Thing” in 1989.
Lee has been known to create beautiful mosaics of Americana, but if you look closely you can see Atlanta in his filmmaking.
Lee’s ode to collegiate life, “School Daze,” was largely based on his time at Morehouse fraternizing with students at Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University and Morris Brown College.
In “Clockers,” Lee gave longtime Atlanta stage actor Tom Byrd, his shot at the big screen. Byrd played a crackhead, but came to personify the drug scourge that had plagued the black community.

Lee does not like “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” calling it *bs.”

We’ve been telling about the many casting calls of the “Superfly” reboot in Atlanta. Now, the movie’s first trailer has been released.
The film, which has rapper Future Hendrix behind it, is based on the 1972 crime drama directed by celebrity photographer and filmmaker Gordon Parks and featured Ron O’Neal in the title role.
Sony has bumped up the film’s release date to June 2018, significantly picking up the pace on production. That means things are happening quickly. Atlanta rapper Future has reportedly sign on to co-produce.
The movie tells the story of Youngblood Priest (O’Neal), an cocaine pusher who is struggling with the duality of trying to get out of the drug business while supporting his lavish lifestyle by earning clean money.
The new film will be set in the modern world with several famous faces in key roles. , Director X will helm the director’s chair for the remake with Trevor Jackson confirmed to star as Youngblood Priest.

Marvel fans woke up Friday to a delight of the senses: The new trailer for “Avengers: Infinity War” was released by Marvel. In all of their glory, you get to see the franchise’s newest super villian, Thanos, take on the likes of Captain America, Iron Man and the whole gang.
Fans of Black Panther will feel right at home as Thanos is seen in the clip laying waste to Wakanda. (Let’s hope it survives, it’s been slated for a part 2.) Along with Chadwick Boseman, we see his on-screen sister Shuri, who figures to play an important role, especially because she is the one who constructs Captain America’s shield out of Vibranium.
This latest movie in the Avengers franchise centers on Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his quest for the Infinity Stones, which has been hinted at (artfully in the post-credit scenes) since the first movie more than six years ago.
Because of fan anticipation, Marvel has moved up the release date of “Infinity War” to April 27.

One of the most revered horror cult comedy films of all time is having a showing in Atlanta in the coming days. “House” or more accurately, (ハウス “Hausu)” is a 1977 Japanese film of critical acclaim. On Thursday, it will play on the big screen at Atlanta’s oldest movie house, the Plaza Theater.
The movie, directed by eclectic filmmaker Nobuhiko Obayashi, centers on a schoolgirl who takes six of her classmates to her sick aunt’s rural home, where they each meet an untimely and supernatural death.
This is what Wiki says about the fear fest: “The film company Toho approached Obayashi with the suggestion to make a film like Jaws. Influenced by ideas from his daughter Chigumi, Obayashi developed ideas for a script that was written by Chiho Katsura. After the script was green-lit, the film was put on hold for two years as no director at Toho wanted to direct it. Obayashi promoted the film during this time period until the studio allowed him to direct it himself. The film was a box office hit in Japan but received negative reviews from critics. House received a wide release in 2009 and 2010 in North America, where it received more favorable reviews.”
“Hausu” is just the first in a series of cult films to be shown at the Plaza. Here are deets on the others. Get tix here.

Kickstarter recently announced a new program for independent creators to get funding. It’s called Kickstarter Patrons. In partnership with the program, Pinewood Atlanta Studios, located in nearby Fayetteville, is looking to back filmmakers in Georgia.
Pinewood, the studio that gave us “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Black Panther,”Pitch Perfect 3,” “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” and more, is promising $10,000 to movies with teams that have at least one female filmmaker who resides in Georgia.
Pinewood says it is seeking movies “with originality of premise, clarity of narrative, and personal vision,” and part of the package will include mentorship, networking opportunities, cash and access to the “Pinewood Atlanta Studios ecosystem of vendors.”
Pinewood, which is the U.S. branch of the UK-based Pinewood, Shepperton and Pinewood Studio Wales, has been booming in recent years. The brand has opened up studios in international places, such as Canada, Malaysia, and the Dominican Republic, in recent years.
Kickstarter says, “Each Patron makes a public commitment to support campaigns on Kickstarter that align with their mission. Patrons will support projects just like any other backer — through single pledges, and in order to bring them one step closer to reality. There is no application process for Patron funding. All projects launched on Kickstarter are eligible, and Patrons will work closely with Kickstarter to find projects that are inspiring and in line with their missions.”
If your organization is interested in participating as a Patron on Kickstarter, contact patrons@kickstarter.com.

The massive box office hit known as “Black Panther” will definitely get a sequel, Marvel CEO Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly.
Feige said that it was way too early to talk about plot, but he could confirm that movie-goers would be treated to more goings-on in Wakanda.
Watch: Marvel’s ‘Infinity War’ trailer
“Nothing specific to reveal, other than to say we absolutely will do that,” Feige was quoted as saying. “One of the favorite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a Part One and talking and dreaming about what we would do in a Part Two. There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first Black Panther. We have ideas and a pretty solid direction on where we want to head with the second one.”
After one of the strongest opening two weeks in modern cinema, “Black Panther” is expected to easily pass the $1 billion mark. The film will soon open in China, seen as a major movie market.
Starring lead actor Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan and Lupita N’Longo, the movie was produced by “Creed” and “Fruitvale” director Ryan Coogler. Boseman said he lived in Atlanta for nearly two years while filming “Black Panther.”
“When I was shooting Black Panther in Atlanta, I used to drive back on off-days to go see my family in Anderson. It’s about two hours,” he said. Read more of his interview here.
A producer on the film said that the for-home release of the movie will re-insert two powerful scenes that were cut for space reasons.
“Hands down the most painful scene to cut was [one] with Danai Gurira and Daniel Kaluuya,” Michael Shawver, who spoke with The WraShap said “Hands down the most painful scene to cut was [one] with Danai Gurira and Daniel Kaluuya,” referring to Wakanda’s armed forces General Okoye and tribe chieftain W’Kabi. In the movie, the two characters are in love.
“Toward the end, after things go bad and Killmonger [Michael B. Jordan] is in control and all that, we’re talking about, what are they going to do? What is Wakanda going to become?” Shawver told The Wrap.

Will Smith is currently in Georgia filming his latest film, “Gemini Man.” The producers are looking for some fresh faces for background roles as well.
Smith, fresh off the success of his first Netflix venture, “Bright,”recently took to social media to complain about the gnats in Savannah. Wearing a net mask, the actor said that he loved Georgia but “you gotta rock this,” he said, pointing to the mask.
As we previously reported the film will be directed by Ang Lee and has been around Hollywood for more than a decade in various versions. It is about an assassin who finally meets his match, actually a younger clone of himself.
“Previous drafts were penned by a revolving door of scribes that included Brian Helgeland, Andrew Niccol and David Benioff. Previously, Tony Scott considered directing as well as Curtis Hanson,” according to Deadline.com. “Skydance acquired the project in 2016 with Jerry Bruckheimer attached to produce with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger and Don Murphy and Chad Oman executive producing.”

Art may be imitating life in a big way for a select group of cities around the United States.
The end of the box office smash “Black Panther” features T’Challa telling his sister that she will spearhead a Wakanda-backed science program for school-aged kids in Oakland. Well, now Disney is reportedly making that dream into a reality.
ComingSoon is reporting that Disney will be donating $1 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to aid its STEM program. Other Boys & Girls Clubs that will benefit include those in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Harlem, New York; Hartford, Connecticut, Memphis, New Orleans, Orlando, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Watts, California.
“Black Panther” has amassed more than $700 million in two weekends and is well on its way to a $1 billion return, virtually assuring at least two sequels and deep integration with following Marvel movies, including “The Avengers.”
To really appreciate how big “Black Panther” has been, consider its $404 million haul after its first 10 days is the second-fastest-grossing movie of all time, beating 2017’s “The Last Jedi ($368 million), “The Avengers” ($373 million) and “Jurassic World” ($402 million).
Only “The Force Awakens” ($540 million) took in more over that time period.
Across the genre, “Black Panther” is the eighth-best selling superhero movie ever.
