    Introducing Atlanta Braves Holdings Inc.

Both parties call the deal The Split-Off and it will allow Liberty Media to refocus its energies on live exhibitions that go well beyond sports. Meanwhile, the Braves will simply have the winningest team in baseball.

Both the Split-Off and Reclassification are subject to, among other things, the approval of Liberty Media’s stockholders at a meeting on on July 17, 2023 and the receipt of certain other approvals and tax opinions.

When Did Liberty Media Buy The Braves?

Liz and Leon’s Set To Open In Downtown Atlanta This Fall

    3 Min Read

Chef Bella Jones is inspired about telling African-American history through food and the area’s Southern cuisine. The chef and food curator is poised to open a new Atlanta restaurant, Liz and Leon’s, in fall 2023.

When the doors open, the eatery hopes to become on of Atlanta’s best black-owned restaurants.

Chef Bella Jones Set To Open Liz & Leon’s In Downtown Atlanta

Jones, whose writings frequently matches the ancestral roots of today’s American palate to African ingredients, says her history in the kitchen is a birthright of sorts.

“I always knew that I wanted to be a Chef!” Jones wrote recently on Instagram. “I was 9 years old when Grandma let me help in the kitchen! I was so happy doing the little things grandma let me do, like pick the greens, mix the cake ingredients to her lemon cake with chocolate icing! I was overjoyed when I graduated to helping with seasoning the chicken! My heart sung when my mother taught me how to make my families Sweet Potato Recipe! I didn’t know it then, but everything my Grandmother taught me had generations of my grandmothers spirits wrapped in every recipe!”

Liz and Leon’s will be located along Hotel Row, a string of commercial buildings that served as the city’s original business district framed by developed by famed architects Samuel Inman and Walker P. Inman.

The structures’ history will only enhance the charm that Liz & Leon’s will bring to downtown. As for Jones, a natural born storyteller, we can look forward to her seasoned tails of family and food and most of all, how tastefully delicious it all is.

“From My Grandmothers Venus & Eliza on the Plantation to my kitchen today, food is what kept my family together,” Jones writes. “It’s how they survived the trials & tribulations of enslavement, what kept them when they left the horrid conditions of Mississippi & migrated to Chicago’s South Side, as they fought for their rights to better education, the right to vote & everything else we take for granted today! I don’t remember a moment in my life with my family that didn’t involve food & so this was ALWAYS MY DESTINY!”

  • Roosevelt Hall completes renovation

AU Center’s Roosevelt Hall Undergoes $12 Renovation

    3 Min Read

Roosevelt Hall on the Atlanta University Center campus has undergone a $12 million renovation that is finally finished. The project wrapped earlier this month, according to the City of Atlanta.

The renovation is due to a partnership between Atlanta Housing (AH), Choice Neighborhoods and the City of Atlanta.

    Roosevelt Hall Renovation Complete

The historic building, located close to Atlanta’s downtown events and activities hub, first served as the Administrative Building for University Homes, America’s first federal public housing project for black families.

A few years after its 1937 completion, the building was christened Roosevelt Hall as a homage to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

A jewel of a building, Roosevelt Hall became a dynamic gathering place for black people as the space featured a handful of storefronts like a diary, grocery store, hair salon and more.

As an AU Center structure, Roosevelt Hall aged badly and soon fell into disrepair, sitting abandoned for a decade after 2008. That is until the City of Atlanta’s Housing Authority hired architectural firm Edwards & Sayward to chart a massive renovation that would restore it to glory.

Where Is Roosevelt Hall Located In Atlanta?

Roosevelt Hall is located at 660 Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard and is the city’s last vestige of University Homes.

Now the historical building’s rich history and cultural significance have been thoughtfully re-imagined, serving the community’s needs and aspirations. The grand reopening marks a remarkable milestone in the ongoing efforts to revitalize Atlanta’s historic neighborhoods.

“The revitalized Roosevelt Hall will stand once again as a vibrant gathering place, positioned to benefit Choice Neighborhoods residents and foster connections with the neighboring Atlanta University Center,” said Eugene E. Jones, Jr. president and CEO of Atlanta Housing. “This visionary project embodies the spirit of progress, inclusivity, and preservation of heritage.”

In honor of its enduring legacy and to commemorate a new chapter in Atlanta’s history, the celebration included recognition of former University Homes residents and featured keynotes from the AH president; Courtney English, Chief Policy Officer and Senior Advisor to the Mayor of the City of Atlanta; and AH Commissioner Rosalind Elliott. The afternoon festivities concluded with a guided tour of the property that offer insights into this monumental project.

Built in 1937, Roosevelt Hall was the central hub of University Homes, the first federally funded public housing project built in the United States for African Americans. Attracting business and civic activity, Roosevelt served as the community center and featured amenities such as a laundromat, library, beauty salon and barbershop. Commissioner Elliott, who grew up in the adjacent John Hopes Homes–built for African Americans in 1941–recalled Roosevelt with fondness.

“It was a special place for all of us who lived in University and John Hope Homes,” she expressed. “Yates and Milton Drugstore was downstairs in the corner. That’s where we got prescriptions filled and my momma bought ribbons for my hair. I also had my birthday parties upstairs in the community room.”

    Final Word

What you might not know about Atlanta, is that the projects first surfaced here. Roosevelt Homes was a  part of that history.

The renovation boasts an array of modern amenities and community-centric spaces. Residents and visitors will have access to a state-of-the-art library, cutting-edge technology center, two captivating history walls, an enchanting urban garden, versatile community spaces, special events venues, including a scenic rooftop, and a retail area. This comprehensive redesign ensures that Roosevelt becomes a versatile and dynamic centerpiece for the community, fostering educational opportunities, cultural enrichment and social engagement.

  • Chastain Horse Park in Buckhead completes project

Chastain Horse Park Completes First Phases Of Renovation

    3 Min Read

The massive remodeling of the Chastain Horse Park (CPH) recently completed its first phase, the facility says in a press release. The park is one of the best places to ride horses in Atlanta.

The 9 million expansion includes a new Community Barn supporting CHP’s Boarder Program complete with a covered practice arena and more.

When Will Phase 2 Begin For Chastain Park Horse Park Expansion?

Phase Two is set to begin in  July with construction of a Therapeutic Horsemanship Center which includes clinical and educational spaces and an additional covered arena.

The modernized horse park will greatly complement the Buckhead restaurant scene, its mansions, shops and other amenities in the area.

“We look forward to this next phase and the completion of the THC which is critical to expansion of our nationally recognized Therapeutic Riding Program,” Gross says in a written statement. “We are grateful to our key partners, architects T.S. Adams Studio, Macallan Construction, and Grovestreet Partners who have gone above and beyond in making this phase of the project successful.  We are also excited to welcome Georgia Home Theater, Landplus Landscape Architecture, and Michael Jackson Landscape Company to the project.”

When Will The Chastain Horse Park Complete Its Renovation?

The entire project is slated to be completed in the third quarter of 2024, according to Executive Director Trish Gross.

The new facility will enable CHP to expand the breadth and depth of impact of their therapeutic programming throughout all of metro Atlanta and beyond. The program focuses on serving children, teens, and adults with physical cognitive and emotional disabilities as well as underserved and at-risk individuals, all in partnership with horses. CHP remains one of only two urban horse parks in the U.S. Also, it is Premiere Accredited by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH), International.

Mayor Andre Dickens recently praised the expansion, the result of a successful “Healing Through Horses” capital campaign. He said the initiative “… can expand the impact on our community. We want to help close the gap. Of 41 zip codes in AtlantaChastain Horse Park serves 32. That means Chastain is city wide. Where we live should not be a barrier to the quality of life you can have and have access to.”

Facility rental, boarding program, and riding lessons partially contribute to subsidies necessary for programming. Scholarship supporters include Boehringer Ingelheim’s BI Cares Foundation (animal and human pharmaceuticals), Molly Blank Foundation, Junior League, RISE Scholarship Foundation, and individuals.

    Final Word

Buckhead continues to reimagine itself with a slate of new projects nearing completion and just getting started, from new restaurants to condos and apartments.  If you’re ever looking for cool things to do in Buckhead, it should be easy.
