Donald Glover may have stepped away from his FX hit “Atlanta,” but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been busy. The AtlantaFX singer and actor Donald Glover recently released “Guava Island” featuring Rihanna. The movie has gotten mixed reviews.
The original movie, streaming for Amazon, has gotten mixed reviews from fans and critics alike.
Atlanta’s Donald Glover stars in Amazon’s ‘Guava Island’
The film was shown at the 2019 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Glover, or rather his musical alter ego, Childish Gambino, headlined the event.
Glover stars as Deni Maroon, a music star on a tropical island. He’s in a relationship with Rihanna, who plays Kofi Novia, a woman who works in the textile plant, basically a sweat shop.
Watch ‘Guava Island’ on Amazon Prime here
The film also stars Letitia Wright, who picks up from her turn in “Black Panther,” to play Kofi’s co-worker and best mate Yara. Reviews have been nothing to praise-worthy for her.
“Guava Island” was directed by Hiro Murai, who helms “Atlanta.” The movie was filmed over a short period of time in Cuba.
The movie has a number of Childish Gambino songs old and new, including an alternate version of “This is America.”

Judging from fans’ reactions, “Guava Island” missed the boat on a few things: Many people thought it was self-aggrandizing and even a disappointment. Many others left feeling like “Was it a musical?” or “Was this a 55-minute music video?”We won’t reveal any spoilers here, but suffice to say that this was simply a delicious visual treatment that Glover and Murai wanted to get out creatively. That expression manifested itself in “Guava Island” this year. Next year or the next project, it will be something else entirely. And that much, we can be sure of.Atlanta is connected to so many movies these days that it’s hard to keep up with it all. Art / Entertainment5 Min ReadThe Atlanta Film Festival continues to show some of the most creative cinematic content we’ve seen in a long time. Among them is the short film “Who You Are,” from filmmaker Joel Blacker. The hilarious short is about an artificial intelligence system in the late 1980s with just enough wit to bring its inventor to his wit’s end.
Short film ‘Who You Are’ screens at Atlanta Film Festival 2019
The movie’s premise stemmed from a concept developed by writer and film collaborator Sam Root dreamed up. AtlantaFi.com talked to Blacker about the making of “Who You Are” and what we can expect from him in the future. With so many movies being produced in Georgia, it’s no longer a given that a filmmaker originates from the West Coast, so here’s the first question we wanted to know:Where are you based?
I’m based in Los Angeles. I made “Who You Are” with Leviathan Filmworks based there.
Photo credit: Joel Blacker What motivated you to get into filmmaking?
I’ve always known I was going to work in film. When I was a kid I shot movies with Legos based on storylines I stole from” Star Wars” movies. I got lucky that my parents moved me to California when I was 12. Living a couple hours north of L.A. allowed me the opportunity to work as a production assistant on sets during high school in the summer. What inspired the making of this film?
Sam Roots (writer) and I have been friends since middle school. We’ve made various short projects together in the last few years that we’ve taken on the festival circuit and seen mild success from. ‘Who You Are’ was based on a short script Sam wrote in college that I absolutely fell in love with. Sam would say at the time he wrote it he was taking one too many religious studies courses and was inspired by a panic attack he had because of them. Since then, Sam and I have been refining the concept and constantly trying to find a way to execute it on a small budget. Why did you decide to do ‘Who You Are’ as a short film?
We realized the concept lent itself more to an episodic format where we could grow and tell more of the story and so we created the short series (5x 5minute episodes) to give people a nugget of the world we want to create. What are some other projects we can expect from you?
We have a pilot script for a longer version of ‘Who You Are’ that we want to create, so working to get that out there. We’ve also written a feature script for a short we made called ‘Let’s Do It’ about a couple’s failed attempt at an orgy. That one can be found online. As we work towards making the show and feature, I’m directing some music videos that people should keep an eye out for. I’m just obsessed with music videos and the possibilities they present to make statement pieces online. You can follow me @JoelJayBlacker to see them as they’re released, or go to my website JoelBlacker.comThe Atlanta Film Festival: What to do this week

Art / Entertainment2 Min ReadThe Netflix movie “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” screened on Sunday, April 7 at the 2019 Atlanta Film Festival. The movie, which stars Zac Efron as Ted Bundy, depicts the serial killer’s pathological liar-lover persona in full spectrum.Oscar-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger was on hand as hundreds of people stood in line at the Plaza Theatre for more than an hour to see the screening.Despite it’s title, “Extremely Wicked” resisted what was expected to be a dark narrative for much of the movie. Only in the last 10 minutes did the film show a true-to-life glimpse of the horrors that Bundy, perfected executed by Efron, did to his female victims.Berlinger drew into his deep experience with true crime documentaries to weave a compelling plot that shows Bundy they way he viewed himself rather than from the lens of the media. Berling did a masterful job with “Exremely Wicked,” which is expected to be a Netflix blockbuster.

Marvel fans are losing their stuff after the Avengers Endgame trailer debuted on Tuesday, April 2, 2019. The 2-minute video didn’t show many of the superheroes but gave fans just enough of the plot to spark a frenzy.
“Endgame” is slated to be released in U.S. theaters on April 26.
The new trailer comes on the heels of the success of Marvel’s Captain America. Unlike much of Avengers 4, which had key scenes shot in metro Atlanta, Captain America was filmed in London, Manchester, Caerwent, and Liverpool in the United Kingdom, and Los Angeles.
Where was Avengers 4 filmed?
Filming for Avengers 4 began in August 2017 at Pinewood Studios in Fayetteville. The Atlanta area has been embraced by Marvel producers as an affordable place to shot and do post-production on the Avenger movies, including some of their individual superhero movies such as Ant-Man.
So far, three Avengers films have been shot in ATL with one slated for release in 2019.
The Captain Marvel trailer debuted during halftime of the Washington Redskins-Philadelphia Eagles game, which starts at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Fans can expect the usual superheroes with deep story arcs, including Iron Man, Black Panther, Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Widow and of course, Thanos.
Captain Marvel will be released in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2019, a few months ahead of Avengers 4, which premieres May 3.

“Stranger Things 3” just released a new trailer and it delivers on the strangeness big-time. The Atlanta-filmed series has been a runaway hit on Netflix.
The third installment is due to be released on July 4, 2019 and we can’t wait.
Watch new ‘Stranger Things 3’ trailer
In the new teaser, we see glimpses of the madness as rats are seen scurrying around the floor in one intense scene.
The episode is reportedly called “Mall Rats,” and with filming done at Gwinnett Place Mall, it’s a perfect fit.
“Stranger Things 3” began production months ago. Back again on screen are Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp and Winona Ryder. But new faces will include Jake Busey and Cary Elwes.
The actors all received huge raises before season 3: Young actors Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp will each make $250,000 per episode, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Teenage actors Natalia Dyer, Joe Keery, and Charlie Heaton will now make $150,000.
Will it be worth it? If “Stranger Things 3” can keep the mystery going and keep audiences guessing, then yes indeed.
