Of course, Tyler Perry Studios jobs won’t just come from filling out an application.
Here’s what Essence Wallace, who worked at Tyler Perry Studios, says about getting a job with the movie mogul.
As far as the process for being hired at TPS — or any job in film and television production for that matter — it’s all about WHO you know. Networking isn’t my strength, per se — BUT I learned to master the art of building relationships. One great relationship will KEEP you working in this industry. It starts by getting out and surrounding yourself with people that are working — like being willing to work for free on independent projects and going to workshops or seminars to develop your craft. As far as Perry is concerned, he puts a lot of importance on make hiring decisions that reflect the community, especially given the lack of representation in the movie business.
This is what he told CBS News:
“I know for a fact that when I drive in through these gates, onto this 330 acres and see these 12 sound stages, and see the highway sign that says ‘Tyler Perry Studios’ as you’re making to the exit in here, as I come in here and I see these hundreds of people working, these black and brown – I’ve been on sets where I’ve been the only black face on, only black face, as recently as 2019 going, ‘Where are the black people in this movie?’ Back behind the camera? So, when I come to work here and every black person that comes to work here they go, ‘Oh my God, it’s heaven. Here we are. We’re represented.’ Where everybody’s represented. LGBTQ’s represented. Black, white, gay, straight, whatever. We’re all represented, working hand-in-hand, arm-in-arm.
Tyler Perry also gives job opportunities to students. Here’s how to get an internship with Tyler Perry Studios.
Wallace, who is now with The Chosen Productions, says the key to getting hired to work on a Tyler Perry Studios production is to immerse yourself in the Atlanta film community, particularly the Tyler Perry Studios environment.
“I’ve rarely seen anyone get hired from submitting a resume online and having a formal interview – not that it doesn’t ever happen. It’s just simply not the norm for someone pursuing a career in film and TV,” she says.
“You have to set your goals, decide the types of projects you want to work on, and then find opportunities to engage with other like minded individuals,” she tells AtlantaFi.com. “I know this is not the answer most people are looking for, but I’ve helped more people get jobs just by helping them connect with the right person vs. focusing on their education and background.”
By the way, Wallace says The Chosen Productions is also accepting resumes for all positions at thechosenproductions2014@
gmail.com for upcoming television shows, films, and documentaries. With more than 700 movie and TV projects just in the last few years, the film industry has generated more than $9 billion for the state of Georgia. There are so many movies filmed in Atlanta these days that it’s hard to keep up with it all. Vice President Kamala Harris is making another visit to Atlanta. She is partnering with rapper Quavo on an Atlanta gun violence summit. During the summit, Quavo and Harris will talk through solutions to decrease gun violence in America.
The summit takes place Tuesday, June 18, the anniversary of Takeoff, Quavo’s nephew and fellow Migos group member.
Just last week, Harris was in town addressing the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. This pivotal stop was to discuss economic empowerment with the audience, underlining the importance of the event.
The discussion, moderated by comedian Steve Harvey, focused on economic opportunity. It was not an endorsement from the 100 Black Men of America, Inc.
“It’s about giving people the opportunity to compete, to allow hardworking individuals to not just get by, but to get ahead,” said Harris.
The stop was part of Harris’ Economic Opportunity Tour, which has included influencers, business leaders, and government experts who share information including specifics on capital available now for entrepreneurs.
“While in Atlanta, I kicked off a nationwide tour to meet with entrepreneurs and let folks know how we are advancing economic opportunity by lowering costs, supporting small businesses, and investing in the aspirations of all Americans,” Harris posted on social media.
“President Biden and I are focused on removing obstacles to economic opportunity as we build a nation where every person can thrive. It was an honor to discuss our Administration’s progress with Steve Harvey and the leaders at the 100 Black Men Conference.”

A new mixed-use development, Lulah Hills, is set to rise in some of the most prime real estate in DeKalb County. To make way for the project, North DeKalb Mall, is set to be demolished on June 26, 2024.
Real estate developer Edens, along with Decide DeKalb and elected DeKalb County officials, have scheduled a press conference on June 26 to kick off the demolition of North DeKalb Mall.
What Is Lulah Hills?
Lulah Hills is a 73-acre mixed-use destination that will feature 320,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, 1,700 multi-family units, 100 townhomes, a 150-room hotel, and a trail connecting to Emory University. This project is being spearheaded by Edens, in collaboration with Decide DeKalb and DeKalb County officials.
The Demise of North DeKalb Mall
North DeKalb Mall, a major shopping destination for two decades after its opening in 1965, is now largely vacant, with only a Marshalls clothing retailer and an AMC movie theater remaining. Located about three miles northeast of downtown Decatur, the mall has been the subject of redevelopment talks for years as its retail spaces have emptied and its corridors have grown darker.
The Future of the Site
Edens plans to transform the North DeKalb Mall property into a diversified town center called Lulah Hills. Preliminary renderings suggest that this mixed-use lifestyle complex could resemble Halcyon or Avalon in Atlanta’s northern suburbs.
Completion Timeline
The first phases of Lulah Hills are expected to be completed by 2025.

What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is an American holiday designed to commemorate and celebrate the emancipation of the slaves.
The holiday was first celebrated in Galveston, Texas, where on June 19, 1865, enslaved blacks were informed of their freedom in the wake of the American Civil War.
On that date, the slaves were joyously declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
