With Atlanta becoming the hottest moviemaking hub in the world, you’d think more writers and talent would emerge from the Dirty Dirty, but things have been slow going as big films largely use the city as a backdrop and hire out-of-town production help. But things could be a-changin’.
Hollywood filmmaker Ava Duvernay has teamed with Getty Images to give an opportunity to aspiring filmmakers and photographers, many of whom reside in The A. Duvernay, who most recently directed “A Wrinkle in Time,” has been a strong supporter of more women and people of color behind the camera and with this initiative, she plans to put her words into action.
Ava Duvernay, Getty Images Want To Give Aspiring Filmmakers, Photographers $5K
The program has set aside four grants of $5,000 each to be awarded to two commercial creative photographers and two editorial filmmakers who capture the visual narrative of underrepresented ethnic communities such as African American, Caribbean, South Asian, Arab, Indigenous and Latinx.
The winners are expected to use their skills to visually represent the underrepresented experience and add layers of context to their individual stories. In addition to the $5,000, winners will also receive mentoring support and guidance from Getty Images and Array.
“There is a gross imbalance of perspectives coming from Black and Brown image-makers. We need to understand that all of our stories matter and the opportunities for artists to create these stories need to be more readily available,” photographer and contest judge Laylah Amatullah told ESSENCE.
Submissions close on Friday June, 8th at 11:59 p.m. PT and filmmakers and send their submissions here.

The weekend was made for dancing and partying and grooving, and what better place to do that than at MJQ, the cave-like Midtown nightclub known across the world? On Saturday, May 19, MJQ will once again host the Love Scam Dance Party.
Billed as the city’s only indie / house vs. hip hop / trap night, Love Scam is held every third Saturday of the month. There’s also an unholy fascination with cats: ++ Cat ears and cat shirts get you in 2 for 1 before Midnight.
The maestro for the night is Atlanta’s Oh Snap Kid. Here’s his bio:
Birthed from the mind of Atlanta’s nightlife “Best of” photographer and creative of EAV’s HEAVY, Oh Snap Kid brings to you another high energy dance party. This go around we have created a dance party that is geared towards those who enjoy the newest in indie rock to the most current hip hop tracks that have been fused with the continuously growing EDM (Electronic Dance Music) trends. Love Scam is where you go for endless dancing, over the top sing-a-longs, like-minded cat-enthusiast, and mischievous stories.

They came, they saw, they twirled. They even meditated.
Injured veterans and some of their family members recently came together to participate in a Wounded Warrior Project®(WWP) ladies-only yoga dance class in Atlanta. The class introduced many of the participants to Vinyasa yoga, which combines elements of power yoga, fitness, dance, and meditation.
Wounded Warriors Project Teams Up With Atlanta Yoga Class
“I was always interested in taking yoga, but the idea of adding dance music seemed more exciting,” said Army veteran Beverly Townes from Snellville, Georgia. “I thoroughly enjoyed the event even though some of the moves were a little challenging, but the staff provided alternate moves and positions for those of us who were unable to do the regular positions.”
The Wounded Warrior Project for years has been dedicated to helping U.S. servicemen and women feel part of the American community again by re-acclimating them to the environment through social programs, support groups, activities and just plain ‘ol fun.
Activities like yoga can also help many of the veterans to utilize coping skills and deal with stress and emotional issues that come from combat.
“Wounded Warrior Project is a great organization that’s been helpful to me and many others,” Beverly said. “It provides services that would not otherwise be available to service members because of their circumstances. I appreciate everything the organization is doing for all soldiers.”

Because we’re special, Wendy’s has rolled out its updated Frosty Card program in metro Atlanta and surrounding areas. Proceeds from this year’s program will go to Camp Sunshine and help send children and teens with cancer to camp this summer.
In addition to patrons in the Atlanta area, customers in other parts of Georgia, including Chattanooga, Macon, Columbus, Savannah and Augusta (as well as Chattanooga) can purchase a limited-edition Camp Sunshine Frosty Card from now until July 1, 2018.
$1 Frosty Card Earns You A Free Junior Frosty With Any Purchase
The Frosty Card costs $1, with each key card redeemable for one free junior Frosty with any purchase until December 31, 2018.
“Camp Sunshine holds a special place in our hearts, and we’ve been proud to support the important work they do for the last nine years,” says Wendy’s Division Marketing Manager Samone Brumfield. “Knowing that we can make a difference in any child’s life means much more than a Frosty. It’s about giving them a break to have fun during an extremely difficult time. That’s priceless.”
“Wendy’s is one of Camp Sunshine’s biggest supporters,” says Nancy Burrow, special events and communications manager at Camp Sunshine. “Last year alone the Frosty Card campaign helped send nearly 400 kids to camp, which is remarkable. We’re looking forward to another successful year and seeing how every Frosty Card purchase truly does change a child’s life.”
