  • Evander Holyfield statue in downtown Atlanta, Georgia at State Farm Arena

Statue Of Evander Holyfield Unveiled At State Farm Arena In Atlanta

    4 Min Read

The Champ has been immortalized with a new statue in downtown Atlanta. Boxer Evander Holyfield’s bust was unveiled at a ceremony on Friday, June 25, 2021.

Holyfield, 58, was on hand along with sports tycoon Arthur Blank, owner of the Blank Family of Businesses, who presented the statue to him.

Evander Holyfield Statue Unveiled In Downtown Atlanta

Holyfield credited his mother and the local Boys Club in his hometown with helping him turn into the man he is today.

He said a trophy he won earlier made a big difference in his life. “The Boys Club gave me the opportunity to become who I am. They had a boxing program. I didn’t really like boxing, but since I won that trophy, when I brought that trophy home and found out that my Mama liked trophies,” he said.

Holyfield joins Atlanta Hawks great Dominique Wilkins as the two legendary sports figures with busts in downtown Atlanta’s State Farm Arena.

The Holyfield statue was commissioned by the City of Atlanta in 2017. Sculptor Brian Hanlon designed it and it was in storage for all that time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But now, it has seen the light of day.

To know why the statue is important for Atlanta as well as Holyfield, one has to know his history.

    Evander Holyfield: History Of Greatness

Holyfield was born in in 1962 in Atmore, Alabama. He had eight other siblings.

Holyfield rose to fame after he won the bronze medal at the at the 1984 Summer Olympics. At age 21, he won his first world championship by defeating Dwight Muhammad Qawi for the WBA title.

Holyfield fought as a heavyweight to get a shot at undisputed champ Mike Tyson in 1989, but in a shock to the world, Buster Douglas took the title.

One year later in October 1990, an overweight Douglas lost to Holyfield in an easy contest for the Atlanta resident.

In 1996, Holyfield would finally meet Tyson in the ring, beating him in an 11th round TKO. Because the fight didn’t unify the belts, the two met again in a rematch.

“The Bite Fight” went down in history as an outrageous affair, which ended in Tyson biting off a chunk of Holyfield’s ear.

After several comebacks, Holyfield officially retired in 2014, the same year his iconic mansion was purchased by another Atlanta celebrity. Read on to learn more about that.

    The Holyfield Mansion

The Holyfield Mansion is an Atlanta landmark that has become a tourist attraction for passersby. Officially in Fayetteville County, Georgia, the home is on Evander Holyfield Highway.

How Big Is The Holyfield Mansion?

The Holyfield Mansion is the largest home in Georgia. It spans 44,234 square feet and sits on 105 acres. As for the rooms in the home, there are109 of them, including, a 135-seat theater, spa, a bowling alley and more.

Who Owns Holyfield’s Mansion In Atlanta?

Rapper and businessman Rick Ross purchased the Holyfield Mansion in 2014 for $10 million. The home was set to be foreclosed on when Ross stepped in to purchase it.

    Final Thoughts

From humble beginnings in Alabama, to worldwide fame, Holyfield has experienced it all.

Holyfield is an Atlanta legend and one of the best sports figures that city has ever had. The Holyfield Mansion remains the swankiest home in the Southeast.

6 Expenses That Didn’t Exist 20 Years Ago

    4 Min Read

Do you ever wonder where your money is going? It seems like every month, expenses eat away at our budget. But the truth is that Americans today are paying for things that simply didn’t exist a short time ago.

Of course, we need the lights on and utilities to work, and even the car note. But it’s those “other” bills that seem to be sapping our paychecks. Where did they come from?

These Expenses Didn’t Exist 20 Years Ago

Let’s look at some of the bills that have popped up out of thin air in the last 20 years.

    1. Baggage Fees

In 2008, American Airlines introduced a $30 fee for your first checked bag. That set off a chain reaction among the airline industry and baggage fees that has been with us ever since. Not only that, but snacks, pillows and the like were free years ago — but not anymore.

    2. Your Streaming Bill

Related to your data plan is your streaming bill. Back in the day, Netflix used to mail you DVDs. Now, the streaming service — and a host of others — are selling subscriptions for anywhere from $5.99 to $50 a month.

For context, you may be trading your cable or satellite bill for two or three streaming services, but as we’re about to see, those subscriptions extend far beyond TV…

    3. Music Subscriptions

Sad to say, it costs money to listen to good music now. Of course, you could tune in to the radio all day, but to get the highly curated audio experience we’ve all come to know and love comes with a price tag. Your monthly Spotify or Apple Music account costs you anywhere from $4.99 to $9.99.

    4. Coffee

Yes, having a morning coffee has been a ritual for years and years, but with the rise of Starbucks and other artisan coffee establishments, a freshly brewed cup has become a recurring bill for many of us.

According to an Acorn Money Matters report, the average American spends approximately $1,100 annually ($3 each day) on coffee. No wonder Starbucks is reported to make $61 million a day.

    5. Ridesharing

Ridesharing has become a common expense for people in big cities, especially millennials who want to bar hop or avoid parking fees downtown. But Americans who use Uber and Lyft spend $22 on an average trip, according to one report. If you rideshare twice times a week, we’re talking more than $240 a month.

of course, that money could be offset by the amount you save on a new car note or taxicab, but the fact remains, ridesharing is an expense we didn’t have years ago.

    6. Bottled Water

It’s true people have been drinking bottled water for a long time, but its status at the top of the food chain has only taken hold in recent years.

In 2017, the Beverage Marketing Corp., an industry consulting firm, announced that bottled water had overtaken milk and beer to become America’s favorite beverage. And as more people swear off tap water, many opt to exclusively drink bottled water.

That means that each year, U.S. consumers spend an average of $100 per person on bottled water. Add other members of the household and this figure goes way up.

    Takeaway

So what’s the point in listing these recurring expenses? It’s so you can see that you may be able to save some of your hard-earned money if you took steps now to invest what you spend on some of these items. Need help? The first thing you need to do is create a budget.

The First Lady Series: Here’s What We Know

The First Lady TV series on Showtime will display the first ladies of the White House in some of America’s most tumultuous tomes of modern history.
Other stars that have been cast in The First Lady are Rhys Wakefield, Judy Greer, Jayme Lawson and Kristine Froseth.
The series, created by Andy Cooley, will be broken down into three seasons.
    • Season 1 focuses on Eleanor Roosevelt (Anderson)
    • Season 2 will be about Betty Ford (Pfeiffer)
    • Season 3 will center on Michelle Obama (Davis)
Let’s look at each of the main characters and their legacies.

    Michelle PFeiffer As Betty Ford

First Lady Betty Ford was known as one of the most outspoken first ladies that have ever been in the White House. Her liberal stances on many social issues caused some stinging rebukes from Republicans despite her husband’s attempts to appear as a moderate.
Mrs. Ford also helped raise awareness for women’s issues like breast cancer after she underwent a mastectomy in 1974. She also did a lot to make treatment for drug abuse more acceptable among the public, rather than a strictly criminal issue.

    Gillian Anderson As Eleanor Roosevelt

For much of her time in the White House, Eleanor Roosevelt was seen as a controversial figure, mainly for her unwavering support of civil rights for black Americans.
She also knew how to charm the media outlets in the day. She was adept at giving regular news conferences, she wrote a magazine column and even hosted a radio show.

    Viola Davis As Michelle Obama

As the only two women who are contemporaries, Davis and Obama have a lot in common.
Obama, the wife of the nation’s 44th president, Barack Obama, is the only first lady that is a lawyer. Despite enduring racial attacks from her own constituents, Mrs. Obama adopted a “when they go low, we go high” mantra. She took on obesity among the youth and became a staunch advocate for clean eating and exercise.

When Will The First Lady Come On?

While the show has began pre-production and filming on location in metro Atlanta, there is no official word yet on when The First Lady will air on Showtime.
With such a stellar cast, you may be wondering how the show will turn out. Us too! Basically, we can’t wait to see The First Lady on Showtime!

Marvel’s Phase 4 Production Schedule: What You Need To Know

    6 Min Read

Are you ready for Black Panther 2 and the other superhero movies coming soon? Marvel Studios has previewed its production schedule through the next couple years, with many of the big-name projects expected to be filmed in Atlanta.

Disney and its streaming service Disney+ figures to play a key role in many of the productions, which have already been spotted filming around Atlanta.

Disney’s plans also involve Fox and Pixar, but a whole lot of Marvel. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic happened, pushing back mostly everything.

To understand how production schedules coincide with Atlanta, we first have to gather a keen knowledge of Marvel’s “Phase 4.”

    What Is Marvel’s Phase 4?

Marvel’s Phase 4 refers to all of the Marvel Studios productions that will be released in the three-year period beginning with 2021 and ending in 2023.

Here’s a video Marvel Studios released on May 3 that previews what’s coming down the pike over the next couple years.

Phase 4 began on the small screen with the release of WandaVision and will start on the big screen with Black Widow in summer 2021.

Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 comes on the heels of the most successful run in the company’s history: Phase 3. That phase saw such tentpole titles of Endgame, Thor: Ragnorok, Captain American: Civil War and Black Panther.

Here’s What To Know About Marvel Production Dates In Atlanta

The success of WandaVision has shown Disney that it can score with a tentpole title in the streaming space, but the cinematic experience continues to be the ideal way to show a movie.

The beloved Marvel franchise was perhaps hardest hit because many of the movies are dependent on others. We’ll have to see how it pans out.

    Marvel Releases 4-Year Production Schedule

Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight and She-Hulk all have been mentioned as future Marvel projects, but nothing has been confirmed.

    Navigation: Marvel Movie Productions

Disney as well as Marvel is making a concerted effort to include more representations of people of color. And it will only get better through the years.

Right on the heels of WandaVision, the MCU jumps right back into the action with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which follows the events in Endgame.

The majority of the scenes from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier were filmed in metro Atlanta, specifically at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville just outside Georgia’s largest city.

If you remember, 2020 was supposed to kick off with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” But it, like most titles, was delayed. when it does debut, it will be Marvel’s first Asian-American led superhero film.

With more than 700 movie and TV projects just in the last few years, the film industry has generated more than $9 billion for the state of Georgia.

In June 2021, the MCU is going all-in on Loki, a Tom HIddleston engine that looks to capitalize on his popularity in the Avengers and Thor franchises.
After that, Scarlett Johansson is reprising her role as Black Widow in a stand-alone movie. Also on the production schedule in 2022 is the sequel to Black Panther, which will likely land at Tyler Perry Studios in southwest Atlanta.
She-Hulk is set to be released on Disney+ in early 2022.
Currently filming in Atlanta, Spider=Man: Far From Home has had numerous sightings of the film’s lead actors, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon.

Keep an eye on Black Panther 2 casting calls in Atlanta. Director Ryan Coogler is back, but with the untimely passing of the film’s star, Chadwick Boseman, Marvel writers are going to have to come up with an heir apparent with the same or more star power.
The largest tentpole movie for 2022 may well be Dr. Strange. The storyline for Multiverse takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Dr. Stephen Strange continues his research on the Time Stone. But an old friend turned enemy seeks to destroy him
Atlanta figures to reap bountifully with all the proposed projects slated between Disney, Fox and Marvel. What will be interesting is how many of these projects employ writers from Atlanta and Georgia.

Because of the success of the Avengers franchise and their sequel projects, Marvel Studios has set itself up to make a deep run into Phase 5, whenever it is greenlit.

If you live in Georgia’s largest city, you may be able to get hired on a big production.

There’s so many film jobs available in Georgia right now (Wanna get cast as an extra?). And with MCU’s Phase Four in production, there won’t be a shortage for a while.

    Final Word

As you can see, Marvel’s Phase 4 includes movie titles and TV series that it will release over the next few years. Fans of course are speculating on many of the release dates, but as of now several of them are to be announced.

Disney was rolling out an ambitious movie production schedule in Atlanta and other parts of Georgia when the coronavirus pandemic occurred. The global health crisis hit the movie industry hard.

All of the early deadlines were pushed back and Disney had to reschedule them. As vaccinations continue to roll out, Georgia’s movie industry hopes to creep back to normalcy.
