In a tense exchange that quickly went viral, rapper 2 Chainz confronted popular TikTok food critic Keith Lee about a negative review of one of his restaurants, sparking a broader debate about celebrity perks versus equal treatment for everyday customers.
The discussion took place during an appearance on Den of Kings, the roundtable series hosted by Kirk Franklin that features candid conversations among Black men in entertainment and business.
2 Chainz, Keith Lee Clash Over Restaurant Review and Celebrity Treatment in Viral Debate
Clips show 2 Chainz bringing up Lee’s prior criticism of his Esco (formerly Escobar) Restaurant & Tapas concept, which he co-founded in Atlanta in 2016 and has since expanded to multiple locations.
2 Chainz argued that his status as a successful entertainer entitles him to certain privileges. “I’m an entertainer, and obviously we get perks that other people don’t get. That’s just period, my boy. I don’t stand in line at the airport. I don’t do none of that because I done worked my ass off to do this,” he said, according to widely shared clips.
Lee pushed back, maintaining that his reviews are designed to reflect the experience of regular paying customers rather than the VIP treatment he might receive once recognized. He has long emphasized this approach, typically having family members place orders anonymously so restaurants cannot adjust service or quality based on his identity. The exchange also included 2 Chainz questioning whether Lee’s strict diet as a former athlete influences his food judgments and overall restaurant assessments.
The clip drew widespread commentary. Many online observers sided with Lee, arguing that a review meant for the general public should accurately represent what average customers can expect. Critics of 2 Chainz’s stance called it tone-deaf, particularly given Lee’s track record of supporting small and Black-owned businesses through honest but constructive feedback—the so-called “Keith Lee Effect” that has driven surges in customers for positively reviewed spots.
The moment fits into a longer pattern for both men. Lee, a former mixed martial artist turned viral food reviewer with millions of followers, previously drew intense scrutiny and backlash during a 2023 Atlanta food tour when he highlighted service issues and inconsistent treatment at several high-profile spots, including restaurants tied to other celebrities. Those reviews ignited debates about standards at Black-owned businesses and the power of influencer criticism.
2 Chainz, meanwhile, has positioned himself as a businessman and restaurateur beyond his music career, building the Esco brand around a lounge-style atmosphere with Southern-influenced food and nightlife elements.
As of now, neither Lee nor 2 Chainz appears to have issued a formal public follow-up beyond the original exchange. The viral clips continue to circulate, with reactions ranging from disappointment in 2 Chainz’s framing to praise for Lee’s consistency on treating all customers equally. The episode underscores ongoing tensions in the intersection of celebrity business ventures, social media influence, and expectations of equity in customer experiences.
