Opening statements continued on the second day of the racketeering trial against Atlanta rapper Young Thug. Court proceedings began Monday, Nov. 27, 2023 in a packed Fulton County, Georgia, courtroom.

Fulton prosecutors, led by Fani Willis, allege that Young Thug, aka Jeffrey Williams, was the self-proclaimed leader of the YSL (Young Slime Life) criminal enterprise affiliated with the Bloods street gang.

On the other hand, the defendant claims that YSL — which stands for Young Stoner Life — was little more than a homegrown record label.

YSL Trial: Day 2

On day two, Williams’ attorneys did their best to turn the narrative that Young Thug’s lyrics described crimes on its head. And one point, Attorney Brian Steel said, “

“Drive-by shootings. These are common themes. This is, you will learn, this is studio gangsters. They are in the studio. They are creating music for us to listen to,” said Steel.

About a year ago, former YSL label mate Gunna pleaded guilty to RICO charges, which he claims don’t affect Young Thug’s case one way or the other.

YSL Trial: Day 1

In her opening statements, Fulton Chief Deputy DA Adriane Love opened by prepping jurors about what they will hear about Williams.

“What you will not hear any evidence of is that the defendants were not involved in a criminal street gang,” she said.

She went on to paint Williams as “King Slime,” someone who turned the community into a haven of crime.

“They created a crater in the middle of Fulton County’s Cleveland Avenue community that sucked in the youth, the innocence and even the lives of some of its youngest members,” she said.

The trial’s first day has been marked by many testy exchanges between the judge and the state and defense, including one in which all Powerpoint presentations were denied.

The judge also introduced his dog to the trial, saying to ignore it during proceedings.

Williams’ attorneys have said that the rapper is innocent on all counts.
