Spelman College recently took home the top prize at the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) National Championship Tournament, America’s premier academic competition for HBCUs.

Spelman College Wins HCASC

Honda annually awards more than $350,000 in institutional grants to participating HBCUs in addition to providing all travel arrangements and accommodations to 48 teams.

The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge competition consists of students answering questions about a number of topics, including arts, pop culture, history, literature, religion and more.

Spelman squared off against Florida A&M University, sweeping them twice.

Spelman’s winning team was coached by Daniel Bascelli and includes Jessika AgyepongMaati McKinneyNaomi Steplight, and team captain, Ariana Benson.

“Winning itself isn’t the only reward. It’s about bringing these students together and watching them represent their school in the best possible way,” Bascelli said in a news release. “The spirit at Spelman is really strong. If you talk to the students, the feeling for Spelman, the feeling for HCBCUs and the support that Honda gives them is all a part of the pride that they feel.”

Spelman now qualifies for the National Championship Tournament. Morehouse College, which was a runner-up, received $20,000 for its placement.
