King’s words not only energized the black community, but they would also soothe a nation looking to right the wrongs of centuries of racism, discrimination and hatred.

King, named after Martin Luther, the clergyman who inspired the Reformation, grew up in a modest middle-class family that took religion and education very seriously.

King’s father and maternal grandfather were Baptist preachers, so it was only natural that the younger King follow in their footsteps.

Contrary to popular belief, MLK followed not his father, but his father-in-law as pastor of the iconic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn neighborhood.
