Atlanta pioneer filmmaker Jessie Maple to discuss new book ‘The Maple Crew’

“Taking the time to tell my story was important to me. This was the first time I’ve slowed down to really think about all of the things that I’ve done,” Maple says in a press release.

Maple’s career is earmarked with a lot of “firsts,” including being the first black woman to join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) union as a camerawoman. She is also recognized as the first black female filmmaker to write and produce a full-length independent film {1981’s “Will”) in the modern era.

In 1989, she produced her second film, “Twice as Nice.”
