A Delta Air Lines flight carrying 136 people from Chicago made a safe emergency landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday after crew members reported a smoky odor onboard. No injuries were reported.
Delta Flight 1264, a Boeing 737-900, departed Chicago O’Hare International Airport early Saturday morning bound for Atlanta with 130 passengers and six crew members.
As the aircraft approached its destination, the crew detected a smoky odor and declared an emergency to receive priority handling from air traffic control. The plane touched down safely around 8 a.m. local time and taxied to the gate under its own power. Airport fire trucks met the aircraft on the tarmac as a precaution before it continued to the gate.
In a statement, Delta emphasized its focus on safety: “At Delta, the safety of our customers and crew comes before everything else. After a smoky odor was detected onboard Delta flight 1264, the crew followed established procedures to land the aircraft safely without incident.” The airline did not identify the source of the odor.
Tracking data and aviation incident reports identify the aircraft as registration N882DN. Some accounts indicate the crew reported smoke or fumes in the cockpit while descending, donned oxygen masks, and later confirmed the odor had cleared after landing. The aircraft returned to service roughly 10 hours later.
The incident concluded without further disruption beyond the priority landing, and all passengers and crew deplaned normally.
