Metro Atlanta is getting another multipurpose arena, this time inside the perimeter. On Monday, city officials and representatives of the Atlanta Hawks broke ground on a 100,000-square-foot facility called Gateway Center @ College Park.
The building will be home to Hawks’ development team in the G League and is slated to open in fall 2019, according to news reports. College Park officials envision the venue as the home to not only numerous sporting events, but concerts and conferences as well.

According to a news release on the project, College Park Mayor Jack Longino said the site will lure new attractions to the city. “This multipurpose arena will bring a much needed venue for sporting events, concerts, graduation ceremonies, and more to the city, broadening the entertainment opportunities for the south metro area.”
“Breaking ground on this state-of-the-art facility marks a significant milestone in delivering on bringing our own G league team to our community, one of our top priorities from when we bought the Club–along with refurbishing Philips Arena and building a new practice facility,” Tony Ressler, Atlanta Hawks Principal Owner and Chairman, said in a statement.
“Everyone at the Hawks is grateful for the hard work of City of College Park Mayor Jack Longino, City Manager Terrence Moore, other members of College Park government and the State of Georgia as we begin construction today. We are confident that this facility will have a meaningful impact both on our club and this community.”

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms preached unity as she addressed a room of influential Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the Buckhead Coalition’s annual meeting.
“We now that when Buckhead is strong, we know that the South Side is strong. We know that when the South Side is strong, we know that the North Side is strong.”
“I am committed to making sure that we continue to work together to make sure that our entire city is as strong as it can possibly be,” she said to a room packed with Atlanta’s elite. “It’s so incredibly important that we remember we really are one Atlanta,”
The theme of the invitation-only event was “Atlanta Together.”
Bottoms’ speech was a salve for business leaders looking for guidance from the new mayor as the city courts Amazon for arguably its biggest power move since the Olympics. Bottoms said that she was all on-board to lure Amazon, but cautioned that there were smaller players she had to cater to as well.
After the event, she tweeted: “t was my pleasure to deliver the keynote address at the 2018 #BuckheadCoalition Annual Luncheon. A reminder that we need all of our diverse communities to come together and move forward as #oneAtlanta to ensure our collective success. Thank you for having me.”
Led by former Mayor Sam Massell, the Buckhead Coalition is a powerful business group made up of the region’s movers and shakers.

After two days of freezing temperatures, the mercury will rise Thursday to about 41 degrees, still too cold to run outside in your bathing suit but much better than it has been earlier this week.
Many employers let their workers stay home for a second consecutive day as roads in some parts of town remained ice-covered. The National Weather Service said warned commuters that if they had to drive, be careful.
“Due to snowfall that has occurred, roads will remain icy and treacherous as temperatures remain below freezing the remainder of today through Thursday morning.”

People around Atlanta woke up Wednesday to a white wonderland: SNOW! That means road conditions were treacherous and will be more most of the day.
Forecasters said freezing temperatures and wind chills would remain in the single digits in metro Atlanta for most of the day.
The City of Atlanta has opened three warming centers for those in need of a warm place to stay. Central Park Recreation Center Grant Park Recreation Center Old Adamsville Recreation Center Anyone in need of a ride to one of these facilities can call 404-546-2710.
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms posted on Twitter, “The sun is out but temperatures are still below freezing. Our @ATLPublicWorks crews have 17 salt spreaders throughout the city & will be treating roads around the clock. Please continue to stay off the road and report icy conditions to @coa311.”

In a sigh of the burgeoning reputation of Georgia’s filmmaking prowess, BBC One has signed on to shoot a TV series at Pinewood Studios, the go-to movie house for Hollywood and increasingly, the world.
“Wedding Day Winners” is a Saturday night entertainment game show that was shot over six weeks with a live audience.
“Each week two couples and their nearest and dearest go head to head in order to make the best day of their lives even better, as they play to win the honeymoon of a lifetime, and a host of fabulous prizes along the way,” the studio says in a summary of the show.
Pinewood Studios has enjoyed an unparalleled reputation since its 2014 opening. Movies and TV shows have flocked to the facility since then, including big-budget flicks such as “The Avengers,” and more.

MARTA is asking the public for feedback after it has come up with some new bus service changes set to take effect in April 2018.
One set of public hearings is planned for January 16, 17 & 18 in Riverdale, Atlanta and College Park. Another is set for Decatur, Jonesboro and downtown Atlanta.

Federal regulators have issued fines to producers of “The Walking Dead” in the death of stuntman John Bernecker, who passed away last July.
In a freak accident, Bernecker, a veteran of the film industry, lost his footing on a balcony and fell 30 feet on set.
He had worked on several high-profile productions including “The Fate of the Furious,” “Logan” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” and “Blank Panther” here in Atlanta. He was rushed to Atlanta Medical Center, where he was treated before he succumbed to his injuries.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Stalwart Films LLC for failing to putting safeguards in place for its employees while on set. The agency cited OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): Section 5(a)(1), which says “he employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees.”
“The Walking Dead” has been filmed in metro Atlanta in all its eight seasons, with primary shooting being down in and around Senoia. It is unknown when the hit show will resume production.

New Office Tower To Rise Next To Dunwoody Marta Station
Nestled up to the Dunwoody MARTA Station, a new 16-story building is set to rise in 2020. Called Twelve24, the office tower will consist of white collar office space while at its base, 11,000 square feet of ground-floor restaurants and retail.

Its first tenant will be Insight Global, a national staffing company that will be housed in 60% of the space, the firm said in a press release.
”We are excited to have secured a new headquarters facility that can accommodate our growth and gives us the opportunity to design a space reflecting who we are as a company, all while remaining in the Central Perimeter area with great access for our clients and employees,” said Glenn Johnson, Insight Global’s Chairman and CEO.
Trammell Crow Company will build the tower on a 3.94-acre site acquired in December 2017.
“TCC’s strategy to re-enter the Atlanta office market was to identify a site and building design allowing for one of the most unique office development opportunities in the Atlanta metro area,” said Brandon Houston, Principal with TCC’s Atlanta Business Unit. “Twelve24’s transit-oriented mixed-use environment with the combination of restaurants, retail, office, and hospitality creates a truly exceptional work space environment. The architecture of the building allows our anchor tenant, Insight Global, and our other tenants, the ability to office in a location where they can connect, innovate, and advance their businesses. We are excited to be working with Insight Global during the design phase to create a successful project outcome for all project stakeholders.”
Construction is expected to begin in summer 2018.
