“The Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry will change the surrounding landscape far beyond just being the largest greenspace in the city,” Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in a written statement. “The park will become ground zero for some of the biggest economic investments ever seen on the Westside of Atlanta. It will help neighborhoods here thrive and return to their former glory, as well as be the home of an important back-up water source for the entire city.”

A $26.5 million project, the initial phase of the future Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry will include a park gateway entrance at the intersection of Johnson Road and Grove Park Place on the north side of the park.

How Big is Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry?

The Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry encompasses 280 acres of greenland, wilderness and cleared-out rock quarry.

    How Will Adjacent Neighborhoods Benefit?

The design will provide lighting, signage, well-designed graphics and will promote pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

The restoration of Grove Park Place will include the removal of invasive species, resurfacing of the roadway, and the rehabilitation of vegetation along the corridor.

Additionally, the grand overlook area will maximize breathtaking panoramic views of the reservoir and the Atlanta skyline. Visitors will also be able to experience the quarry by ADA accessible trails leading to the grand overlook.

“The Department of Parks and Recreation is excited to break ground today on the Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry,” said Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Amy Phuong. “Since being appointed as Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner in 2015, it has been an honor and privilege to help increase access to greenspace and to help grow our programs and facilities in our recreation centers. I am proud to be here today celebrating the beginning of this transformative project and to thank Mayor Bottoms and City leaders for their commitment to this park and our city.”

New Restaurant Alert: Casi Cielo Opens In Sandy Springs

    2 Min Read

Casi Cielo, a chef-driven, upscale-casual dining eatery, had a soft opening on Thursday, September 8, 2018, according to the AJC. The opening means the eatery is taking reservations, the newspaper reports.

Casi Cielo, which was first slated to open in late August, comes to us from the same people who brought metro Atlanta the venerable La Parrilla Mexican Restaurant. This time, the purveyors, La Cosecha Group, will serve locales tasty dishes featuring artisanal Oaxacan cuisine.

The 135-seat restaurant in the Modera mixed-use development includes a patio and full bar with over 50 types of Mezcals – the largest collection in Atlanta. Patrons have premium cocktails at their call, but also a generous selection of wines from Spanish-speaking countries including Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, Mexico and Chile, just a cork pop away.

The eatery  also features water infused daily with fruits and herbs via a SonicPrep Ultrasonic Homogenizer machine, from which low-heat sound waves create a smooth infusion of flavors and aromas.

Casi Cielo also serves as the U.S. debut of Executive Chef Juan Ruiz, who earned his kitchen stripes from the maternal side of his family  in his native Bogota, Colombia. His culinary expertise includes stints in the esteemed kitchens of Palacio de Congresos El Kursaal (three Michelin Stars; Barcelona, Spain), Hotel Finca Lérida (one Michelin Star; at the base of Volcán Barú in Panama), and many other elite restaurants.

“Everything served at the restaurant is designed to stimulate the senses and entice the palate. We respect the ingredients, history and traditions of Mexican cuisine and pride ourselves in doing things the right way- no shortcuts,” Ruiz said in a written statement.
