Spencer Strider has been added to the Atlanta Braves starting rotation and looks the part against the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

About Spencer Strider: Braves Star Pitcher

But who is Spencer Strider? Well, for starters, he is a professional baseball pitcher for the Atlanta Braves in Major League Baseball (MLB). High School and College Career

Spencer Strider attended Christian Academy of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, for high school. During his time there, he played both baseball and football, showcasing his athletic abilities.

For college, Strider played for the Clemson Tigers at Clemson University in South Carolina. He pitched for Clemson’s baseball team for three seasons (2018–2020), where he made a name for himself as a standout pitcher.

Although his college career was affected by injuries, he showed great promise and was eventually drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB Draft.

    Pro Baseball Career

Strider is known for his strong fastball, often touching triple digits, and his devastating slider. He made his MLB debut for the Braves in 2021 and quickly gained attention for his impressive strikeout ability. He became a key part of the Braves’ pitching staff, contributing significantly to their rotation and bullpen.

In 2022, Strider had a breakout season, finishing second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting, largely due to his exceptional strikeout numbers and effectiveness on the mound. He’s often praised for his poise, work ethic, and the dominance he brings as a pitcher. His rise has been one of the more exciting stories in recent MLB seasons.

Here’s how to apply for some key options available as of March 2025:

      2. By Phone: Call the DFCS Customer Contact Center at (877) 423-4746 to apply over the phone. You’ll need to provide your name, address, and household details.
      3. By Mail: Download Form 508 (Food Stamp/Medicaid/TANF Renewal Form) from dfcs.georgia.gov, complete it, and mail it to Georgia Senior SNAP, P.O. Box 450149, Atlanta, GA 31145-0149, or fax it to (678) 717-5585.

    • What You’ll Need: Proof of income (like Social Security or retirement benefits), resources, rent/mortgage costs, and utility bills. After applying, expect a phone or in-person interview with a DFCS case manager.
    • Eligibility Tip: You qualify if your household is all 60+, not working, on a fixed income, and meets income limits (generally below 165% of the poverty line).

    Atlanta Community Food Bank Assistance

The Atlanta Community Food Bank partners with Georgia DFCS to help seniors apply for SNAP and find local food pantries.

    • How to Apply:
      1. SNAP Help: Call (678) 553-5917 for English/Spanish assistance or schedule an appointment at acfb.org to apply in person at 3400 N Desert Dr, East Point, GA 30344. A Benefits Coordinator will guide you through the Georgia Gateway process.
      2. Find a Pantry: Use their online tool at acfb.org/find-help or text “FINDFOOD” (or “COMIDA” for Spanish) to (888) 976-2232 for pantry locations—no application needed for immediate food aid.
    • What You’ll Need: For SNAP, bring income and expense docs; for pantries, just show up (some may ask for ID or proof of residency).

    Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

This federal program provides monthly food boxes to low-income seniors 60+ via local agencies like the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

  • rainy weather in Atlanta.

Winter Storm: North Georgia Sees Light Snow, Atlanta Gets Rain

    3 Min Read

Another week, another winter storm watch for Georgia.

A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for the North Georgia mountains and Northwest Georgia early Wednesday morning, Feb. 19.

That means some of Atlanta’s northern counties will likely get a few hours of snow and sleet. For Metro Atlanta, expect freezing rain.

Local forecasters say the worst weather will come between 5 and 7 a.m.

If you live in Metro Atlanta, you should plan on a cold rain for the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service, “Light snow is forecast in far north Georgia on Wednesday. Totals will generally be a half an inch or less, but a few places above 2500 ft could see close to an inch. Be prepared for slick roadways.”

How To Drive in Rainy Conditions

Driving in rainy conditions can be challenging and dangerous if not done carefully. Here are some essential tips to stay safe:

    Before You Drive:

    • Check Your Tires: Ensure they have good tread depth and proper inflation for maximum traction.
    • Test Your Wipers & Lights: Make sure your windshield wipers work effectively and turn on your headlights for visibility.
    • Plan Ahead: Give yourself extra time to reach your destination, as wet roads can cause delays.

    While Driving:

    • Slow Down: Reduce your speed to maintain control and prevent hydroplaning.
    • Increase Following Distance: Leave extra space between you and the vehicle ahead to allow more stopping time.
    • Avoid Sudden Movements: Brake, accelerate, and turn gradually to prevent skidding.
    • Use Defrosters: Keep your windshield clear of fog to maintain visibility.
    • Stay in the Middle Lane: Water tends to pool in outer lanes, increasing the risk of hydroplaning.

    If You Hydroplane:

    • Stay Calm: Don’t panic or slam on the brakes.
    • Ease Off the Gas: Let your car slow down naturally.
    • Steer Gently: Keep your steering steady and avoid sudden movements until you regain traction.

    Extra Precautions:

    • Avoid Standing Water: Large puddles may hide potholes or cause your car to stall.
    • Beware of Flooded Roads: Never drive through deep water, as it can damage your engine or sweep your vehicle away.
    • Watch for Pedestrians & Cyclists: Rain reduces visibility, so be extra cautious.

By following these tips, you can reduce the risks associated with driving in the rain and ensure a safer journey.

Dave and Buster's: Best bars in Atlanta

Here’s what one reviewer says about Davve & Buster’s: “I haven’t been here but I’ve been here. If that makes since. I was out shopping and stopped inside since it was inside the mall I was in. We walked around the whole place in awe. I haven’t seen so many games. And I love video games. It definitely looks like a lot of fun and I’m ready to experience some. Everyone from kids to the adults were enjoying themselves. We’re going back to experience it ourselves. But the atmosphere is out of this world. So much to do in this facility.”

We visit Atlanta every year at Christmas time, and Yard House has become a family tradition. The menu is extensive and everything we’ve tried has been delicious! One Google reviewer says: “This is a really fun place for all age groups. If golf is not your thing, they also offer table tennis or ping pong upstairs and pool tables downstairs. The putting area is spacious. Of course it is outdoors, but they offer large heat lamps directly over the seating area. There are two levels to the seating area. The first is a high bar with chairs. The second is a u-shaped outdoor sofa with a center table. All food and drink orders can be placed from your bay. For each game, each player gets 20 chances to “put the ball in the hole”. You can take all 20 swings in a row or rotate players as you’d like. If you aren’t interested in playing any of the game options, you can also dine in or have a round at the bar. Enjoy!”

Gypsy Kitchen and Southern Gentleman Reopening Feb. 3

    3 Min Read

Two of my favorites Buckhead restaurants — Gypsy Kitchen and Southern Gentleman — are poised to reopen to the public on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025.

After a brief closure in January for essential HVAC system upgrades, Gypsy Kitchen and The Southern Gentleman are set to unveil a refreshed interior featuring a brighter color palette and design enhancements that create a more inviting and contemporary atmosphere.

To celebrate the reopening, Gypsy Kitchen is offering guests a complimentary hummus and flatbread per table during the week of February 3-11.

Additionally, on Friday, February 7, the restaurant will host a Big Reveal Party, featuring passed hors d’oeuvres in the bar area, half-priced bottles of wine throughout the evening, live music from 5-8 p.m., and other surprises.

The Southern Gentleman will welcome patrons back with a special Welcome Back prix-fixe menu available from February 3-11. Priced at $40 per person, the menu includes guest favorites and a preview of upcoming spring dishes, such as Little Gem salad, deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, braised short ribs, Creole-spiced redfish, pineapple-glazed pork chop, and shrimp and grits. The featured beverage is the Simply Southern old-fashioned, crafted with Southern Proper Hospitality Group’s Knob Creek Private Barrel bourbon, bacon fat-washed with candied peppercorn bacon, priced at $18.

The January closures allowed both establishments to modernize their HVAC systems, ensuring a more comfortable and climate-controlled environment for guests, especially during warmer months. Kim Fong, Southern Proper Hospitality Group’s director of art and style, also took the opportunity to update Gypsy Kitchen’s interior design, introducing softer, more feminine touches to brighten the space.

Chris Hadermann, Southern Proper Hospitality Group managing partner and CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the updates, stating, “Our team has spent the past few weeks immersed in a design refresh for Gypsy Kitchen. While it was a small window of time, that focused attention will significantly impact the atmosphere and guest experience.”
