• Janet Jackson Given Icon Award At BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards In Atlanta

    2 Min Read

Atlanta was host to the 2018 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards this fall and none other than music superstar Janet Jackson, who received the Icon Award.

The event, which recognizes the year’s top R&B/hip-hop songwriters, producers and music publishers, was held Thursday, August 30 at The Woodruff Arts Center’s Symphony Hall.

Jackson joins elite stars such as Patti LaBelle, Nile Rodgers, James Brown, Snoop Dogg and Al Green as those who have gotten the Icon honor. But none of those artists come from the musical heritage of Jackson.

Singing and dancing since she was born, Jackson’s artistry and music has come to transcend generations and has inspired many with messages of empowerment.

Throughout her groundbreaking career, she’s sold more than 160 million records worldwide, scored seven No. 1 albums, and she’s the only artist in Billboard’s history to have three different albums— ControlJanet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 and janet.—each produce five or more top ten hits on the Hot 100 chart. Jackson is also one of only four artists, alongside Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand and U2, to have earned No. 1 albums in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s.

  • Atlanta Dream Beat Washington Mystics, Even Playoff Series

    2 Min Read

The Atlanta Dream evened the playoff series against the Washington Mystics on Tuesday night, beating them 78-75. The Mystics lost their best player, Elene Delle Donne, in the fourth quarter.

McCamish Pavilion was electric as the Dream scratched and clawed their way to hang on for the victory.

“Really, really proud of our toughness,” Dream coach Nicki Collen said after the game. Collen had double reason to celebrate: She was named WNBA Coach of the Year earlier in the day. “We turned over the ball too much, but to get stops when we needed them says a lot about our team. Early in the season, we had a lot of grind-it-out kind of games, and tonight was another one of those.”

The series is now tied at 1-1 and will head to Washington for game 3 on Friday night. In game 1, the Dream couldn’t find any momentum on offense, losing 87-84 at home on Sunday. Their ace shooter, Tiffany Hayes, was cold for most of the night.

Delle Donne told fans that she will be OK, saying “the swelling isn’t terrible.”

On Tuesday,  Hayes scored 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Center Elizabeth Williams (10 points, 11 rebounds) had a solid game as well as Atlanta had an 18-rebound advantage.

Game 3 will be Friday, August 31 at 8 p.m. ET at Charles Smith Center, George Washington University. The contest will be simulcast on WNBATV and ESPN2.

Construction Starts On Gentry Mixed-Used Development In Buckhead

    3 Min Read

Development and management company LMC announced this week that it has broken ground on Gentry, a luxury mixed-use apartment community in Buckhead.

The 21-story high-rise community, which will feature 290 apartment homes and 6,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, is being developed in conjunction with Hoar Construction. The companies recently collaborated on The Morris, a luxury apartment community in Nashville that opened in 2017. First move-ins at Gentry are anticipated for mid-2020.

“We’re excited to join the robust Buckhead market and get started on an apartment community that will be situated in the center of so many recreational activities,” said Chris Cassidy, division president of the Southeast for LMC. “With the vast shopping and dining options within walking distance, this will be a place where residents can ditch their cars for the weekend and relax within the neighborhood. With the stellar location, the remainder of the city will be at their fingertips, as well.”

Under construction at 3172 Roswell Road, Gentry is the redevelopment of a one-acre surface parking lot that will add 20-foot wide tree-lined sidewalks and street-level retail to an emerging neighborhood. The site, which boasts a Walk Score of 91, features prime access to attractions such as The Buckhead Theater, The Shops at Buckhead, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Atlanta History Center. Phipps Plaza and Lenox Mall, which offer various additional local and national retailers, are each within two miles of the community.

Gentry will provide near-direct access to several public transit options and the key thoroughfares of the city. The Buckhead MARTA station is 1.2 miles from the community and serves as the gateway to the metropolitan area. Georgia State Route 400? is situated one mile from the community and Interstates 85 and 75 are within a short drive.

“We’re thrilled to team with LMC on another development, particularly one in such a vibrant locale,” said Jason Bennett, division vice president for Hoar Construction. “Our co-development in Midtown Nashville was a resounding success, and we can confidently proclaim that Gentry will feature the same high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.”

Gentry will consist of studio, 1- , 2- and 3-bedroom apartment homes and a select number of penthouse-level homes with hardwood floors. Apartment interiors will contain high-end finishes, wood-plank style flooring, custom cabinetry and private balconies. Select homes will include kitchen islands and wine fridges.

Community amenities will include an eighth-floor terrace with grills and an outdoor movie theater, and a 21st-floor amenity level. The latter will include a private dining room and catering kitchen, lounge, pool table, swimming pool, indoor/outdoor bar, grills, cabanas and a club-quality fitness center with indoor/outdoor yoga. Residents will also have access to bike storage, electric-vehicle charging stations and work-from-home spaces.

WNBA Playoffs: Atlanta Dream Host Game 3 Against Washington Mystics

    1 Min Read

Game 3 of the WNBA Playoffs semifinals will be Friday, August 31 at 8 p.m. ET at Charles Smith Center, George Washington University. The contest will be simulcast on WNBATV and ESPN2.

On Tuesday night at McCamish Pavilion, the Atlanta Dream used a sold-out arena to even the series against the Washington Mystics.

The Dream were down 0-1 in a best-of-five series against the Mystics, who are the hottest team in the league. In game 1, the Dream couldn’t find any momentum on offense, losing 87-84 at home on Sunday. Their ace shooter, Tiffany Hayes, was cold for most of the night.

Atlanta is also clearly missing Angel McCoughtry, who is out for the season after sustaining a knee injury earlier this month.
