Labor Day 2026 falls on Monday, September 7, giving metro Atlanta a late-summer long weekend. Most government services are shut, but grocery stores, restaurants, and big-box retailers are largely open — with a few important exceptions. Hours can vary by location, so call ahead or check an app before you leave.

What’s closed Monday

Government and public services

  • Federal offices, federal courts, and most state offices (Labor Day is on Georgia’s 2026 holiday calendar).
  • U.S. post offices: no retail service and no regular mail delivery. Priority Mail Express still runs.
  • Bank branches (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Truist, and others). ATMs and online/mobile banking still work; some transactions may post Tuesday.
  • Atlanta Public Schools and Fulton County Library System branches.
  • The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. Trading resumes Tuesday.
  • Regular UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery. Some store locations may have modified hours.

Retail exception

  • Costco warehouses are closed nationwide for the holiday. Sam’s Club is typically open with earlier closing (often 6 p.m.).

What’s open Monday

Most everyday businesses stay open.

Groceries and big-box stores Walmart, Target, Kroger, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Aldi, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Dollar General, Kohl’s, Macy’s, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and similar chains are generally operating. Some locations use regular hours; others trim pharmacy or department hours. Check your store.

Pharmacies and coffee CVS, Walgreens, and Starbucks locations are typically open, sometimes with reduced hours.

Restaurants and fast food McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Burger King, Domino’s, IHOP, and most local restaurants remain open. Confirm hours — some independent spots close or go to holiday menus.

Parks and attractions

  • Atlanta Botanical Garden: open 9 a.m.–7 p.m. for Labor Day.
  • Piedmont Park’s public pool is scheduled through Labor Day, the last day of its regular summer season.6
  • Stone Mountain Park lasershow and fireworks continue through Monday night.

Getting around

MARTA rail runs on a Saturday schedule Monday, with service starting around 6 a.m. Extra service has been in place for Dragon Con and other weekend events. Expect heavier traffic around Midtown, Downtown, and Piedmont Park.

  • Big Peach Sizzler 10K & 5K starts early Monday from Chamblee/Brookhaven MARTA toward Buckhead.

  • Atlanta Black Pride programming continues through Monday.

If you need mail, banking in person, or a Costco run, take care of it Tuesday. For cookouts, last-minute school supplies, or a park day, most of Atlanta is still open.
