Over the past month, the red-hot Atlanta Dream have been riding their young players to first place in the WNBA. With the Chicago Sky scratching and clawing to a one-point lead at halftime Friday night, it looked like August was going to start with a downer for Atlanta.

But Angel McCoughtry and Tiffany Hayes both picked up their scoring in the second half, leading the Dream to an 89-74 win at McCamish Pavilion on Midtown Atlanta.

The Dream have been getting balanced efforts from all of their starters, but their nine-game win streak is largely because of the consistent play of Tiffany Hayes. It was Hayes who hit a game-winning buzzer beater two weeks ago.

On Friday, she dropped 19 points, only two behind Dream high scorer McCoughtry, who finished with 21.

Hayes has been on fire over the summer. For her efforts, she was awarded WNBA Player of the Month for July. During that time, the Dream have gone 9-2 to boost their record to 16-10.

Now, they have won 10 in a row to take a 17-10 record into the first full week of August.

The Dream’s Jessica Breland added 13 points and nine rebounds while Courtney Vandersloot led Chicago (10-18) with 24 points.

In the WNBA, the Dream are in second place, three games behind Seattle (20-7).
