Thirty-five of 76 recipients of the Google for Startups Black Founders cash awards will go to metro Atlanta businesses, the company says in a news release.

Those 35 local entrepreneurs will each receive up to $100,000 in cash awards, totaling 2.3 million. The sum is about half of the $5 million Google has allotted for the program.

The money is non-dilutive, which means founders have not had to give up any stakes in their companies.

The monetary prizes signal Google’s renewed commitment to minority businesses across the country, but especially in Georgia.

Atlanta-Based Black Entrepreneurs Awarded Millions From Google

The distribution of cash awards for Black Founders Fund recipients nationwide will be administered by Goodie Nation, an Atlanta-based nonprofit that facilitates and accelerates social capital opportunities.

“We are committed to helping Black founders who have been deeply impacted by COVID-19 and who are disproportionately locked out of access to the funding they need to succeed,” says Jewel Burks Solomon, Head of Google for Startups US. “By combining cash awards with Google for Startups mentorship and programming, we hope to help create a more level playing field for these founders, who are building amazing companies and making an impact on their communities.”
