The ongoing writers strike and looming actors strike may have grave consequences for some of the tentpole franchises in cinema, including those produced by Marvel Studios.
That means that Atlanta, Georgia — a favorite production site for Marvel — stands to suffer a major blow if things continue to worsen between Hollywood crews, talent and executives.
Report: Disney May Slow Down On Marvel Productions
Disney CEO Bob Iger told CNBC that the company is in the midst of several cost-cutting measures to its animation business and movie productions including Lucasfilm and Marvel.
“You pull back not just to focus, but also as part of our cost containment initiative. Spending less on what we make, and making less,” Iger told the publication. The company has been making decisions to make its streaming service, Disney+, compete against Netflix and more.
When talking about making tough decisions for Disney, Iger said he appreciated that Marvel’s content has worked so well for its TV business, but he’s not sure how long it can last.
“Marvel is a great example of that. It had not been in the television business at any significant level, and not only did they increase their movie output, but they ended up making a number of TV series,” said Iger. “Frankly, it diluted focus and attention.”
Final Word
Hollywood’s first industrywide shutdown looks like it’s going to happen. The union representing television and movie actors is set to join the picket line filled with screenwriters.
As for Atlanta, it’s evident that production has slowed. And yet, projects from CBS, NBC, HBO, BET and more are slated to shoot in the latter part of the year and the foreseeable future.
