Black Men Buy Houses Co-Founders Kevan and Ayesha Shelton hosted their inaugural Black Men Buy Houses event in Atlanta on October 12th at The Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs.
The event, which was presented by Citizens Trust Bank, featured special guests John Hope Bryant, a renowned entrepreneur, economic empowerment advocate, Author, Founder & Chairman of Operation HOPE and H. Jerome Russell Jr., President of H.J. Russell & Company.
The Sheltons launched the “Black Men Buy Houses” initiative to address the barriers and historical inequalities Black men face in homeownership. The event provided attendees with essential financial literacy tools to begin their home-buying journey, focusing on overcoming limited access to knowledge and financial resources.
“Black men often face challenges when purchasing homes, stemming from limited information about the process and financial resources, which can hinder their ability to secure funds for down payments, credit, and closing costs. Our initiative’s objective is to break down these barriers, enabling more Black men to achieve the dream of homeownership,” said the Sheltons.
This initiative was created because, historically, there has been a lack of focus on Black Men. Homebuyer data indicates that Black men lag behind Black women in homeownership, education, entrepreneurship, and earnings. Black women are achieving higher levels of education which directly translates to workforce participation, hence the need for initiatives such as Black Men Buy Houses to address the disparities that exist for Black men.
What started in Houston as the Shelton’s’ goal to help 500 Black men purchase homes has expanded into a nationwide initiative focused on empowering Black Men to become homeowners, providing financial literacy through real estate, allowing Black Men to have a piece of the American Dream. The Atlanta event offered one-on-one sessions with credit specialists and mortgage representatives and panel discussions designed to prepare participants with the tools needed to start the homeownership journey.
Black Men Buy Houses currently holds a National MOU with Operation HOPE which allows attendees to gain credit counseling beyond the event, directly tying into John Hope Bryant’s mission of advocating for financial literacy and empowerment within the Black community. During the event, John Hope Bryant shared his experience on overcoming financial barriers and the importance of economic equity.
The event’s presenter, Citizens Trust Bank, shared, “Partnering with the Black Men Buy Houses initiative has been a proud moment for our bank. This event gave us the opportunity to engage directly with Black men in our community, offering tools and guidance to help them navigate the path to homeownership”, said Farrand O. Logan, Executive Vice President, Chief Lending Officer, Citizens Trust Bank. “We believe that financial empowerment begins with access to knowledge and resources, and this partnership is about more than just buying houses—it’s about creating lasting wealth and stability for future generations”, concluded, Logan.
The Shelton’s plan to host additional events in major cities, under their National MOU with NAREB on their “Building Black Wealth.” continuing their mission to support Black men in achieving homeownership. “This is just the beginning,” said The Sheltons. “We are determined to expand our efforts and impact even more lives.”

The Solutions Not Punishment Collaborative (SnapCo) will hold its inaugural SnapCo Forever Gala as a call to action for SnapCo supporters, old and new, to continue celebrating and investing in Black trans leadership for years to come. With the theme “Make it Last”, the inaugural gala will occur on Saturday, July 13, 6:00 pm, at Factory Atlanta.
The gala will raise money for SnapCo’s Taking Care of Our Own Fund, a mutual aid project created in 2016 to provide urgent, life-impacting, health-sustaining support to Atlanta’s Black, trans, and queer communities, offering everything from emergency bailouts to housing, gender-affirming support and bill assistance.
“This event showcases Black and Trans excellence in all of its glory, shedding light on the role of community support in fueling our efforts to end violence against women, femmes, and trans people,” said Toni-Michelle Williams, SnapCo’s executive director. “Our commitment is unwavering and steadfast toward building a vibrant, radically inclusive metro Atlanta where all our people are resourced, safe and free.”
The evening will be an unforgettable experience hosted by actress and Emmy Award-nominee, Angelica Ross (FX’s Pose and American Horror Story), with special appearances by comedian Kia Comedy and STARZ’s “P Valley” breakout star Toni Bryce.
There will also be feature performances from queer artists Rahbi and D’Asia Blush Cassadine, a beautiful tribute to the late Juan Evans, and an exclusive exhibit, “Transformation Takes Time” showcasing SnapCo’s legacy and impact. Also, a few SnapCo Icons will be honored with a Snap4FreedomAward.
SnapCo’s donors are excited to attend the event, too. Nichelle Brunner, Program Officer at Borealis Philanthropy shares that “SNaPCo’s leadership and vision for Atlanta has not only impacted the folks of the city, but has laid the blueprint for the larger racial justice, criminal justice, and LGBTQ movements. Their work is transformative and inclusive, based in liberatory ideas, leading to reverberating effects for so many. It’s why Borealis continues to support and advocate for others to support their work.”

Atlanta-based frozen dog treats company Frost Bytz recently hosted its Paws & Pose event for dogs and owners to experience a doggy runway show and special holiday photo opportunities.
The event was curated around raising money for the Georgia Homeless Pets Animal Rescue Group, a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to save, care for, and place animals into loving homes.
“Frost Bytz appreciates everyone who attended our event,” said Bakir Floyd, co-founder of Frost Bytz, an Atlanta-based company that specializes in providing frozen doggy treats. “We’re happy that we were able to provide so much joy and make an impact with organizations like the Georgia Homeless Pets Animal Rescue Group, Lifeline Animal Project, and Happy Hearts Pet Care Atlanta.”
In addition to the money that was raised, Frost Bytz contributed a check of $500 to Georgia Homeless Pets Animal Rescue Group and also gave $500 checks to both Lifeline Animal Project and Happy Hearts Pet Care Atlanta.
Hosted by Atlanta radio personality Reec (Majic 107.5) and creative directed by Marcus Blassingame, attendees experienced a doggy fashion show, where models and dogs walked down the runway with wears by fashion designer Ricardo Auguste.
Auguste is the owner of Beaut Outerwear, a custom clothing label that designs garments for both pets and pet owners.
A few of the dogs that were up for adoption also strutted down the runway in Beaut Outerwear, allowing potential new dog owners to see what they got. Additionally, attendees were able to take part in unique photo opportunities with four handmade custom holiday sets, where pet owners posed with their dogs.
“This was the perfect event to kick off the holiday season for pet owners. We were able to not only provide them with a unique experience for their dogs, but we also were able to give back to organizations that make an impact in the pet community,” Floyd said.
Floyd also commented that the success of this event means that the company will attempt to host more unique events with the same mission, supporting organizations that help dogs in need.
